bull crap

Or I spend what I would spend on food for about 7-10 days on it. You assume the full $64/day is disposable and that there isn't a potentially three month long rainy day to save for.

I am actually mildly surprised at the smug counter-whining. I suppose people don't realize that the truly spoiled entitlement-issue kids don't even look at price tags anyway.
I call bull on this whole argument that ph0rk and others are presenting here.

Sure, a student might make 64 dollars a day at a part-time student job while going to school, but that ignores the entire social support structure (family and government) that got them there in the first place.

Do you really expect us to believe that you are saving up the pennies (after buying food and shelter) from this tiny wage to also pay your tuition, books etc. for the following year? That money, and the money to get you enrolled for this semester, buy your books, etc. obviously comes from somewhere else and isn't included in your calculations presented here.

Also I have worked at a major University for over 15 years now and I have yet to see any "poor" students. Anyone that can afford to attend at all, can certainly afford a 36 dollar price increase. Course-books alone cost usually about 200 - 400 bucks a *course*. Thirty-six bucks, (or even 116), is (relatively) small beans compared to all the other huge costs of a University education and talk about eschewing Leopard because of the price increase is absolutely ridiculous.

Sure, it would have been nice if the price stayed the same, or if they had given more warning about it, but to make out like this is some great financial hardship is just the biggest pile of bull I have heard in a long time. You are a first-world, upper-middle class, "rich" kid by definition if you are in University at all.

Get over yourself.

If you can't pay the extra, then steal your software like most University students do. Just don't expect whatever you chose to do to be justified in any way by a simple 36 dollar price increase. No one is twisting your arm, or denying you your rights, or forcing you to do anything at all here.

I'm not too upset personally about the EDU pricing (as I have my $100 iPhone voucher and so instead of being free it will only cost me $16). BUT I do think that it is inherently unfair.

So let me get this straight. You feel its unfair that Apple only gives you, a student who can apparently afford an iPhone (pre-price drop), a 10% discount on Leopard. Many of us are not students, don't get the discount, and can't afford an iPhone. I would gladly take the 10% price reduction.

Higher education institutions each have TWO Apple Stores: one for individual purchases, and one for institutional purchases.

At the Apple Store for University of Wisconsin-Madison, Leopard is $69 at the institutional store (e.g., where university departments purchase from), and $116 at the individual store (e.g., where faculty, staff, and students purchase from).

Previously, Mac OS X has been $69 across the board.

Leopard Server also went up greatly for individual purchase. The 10-client went from $249 to $449 ($499 retail), and unlimited client from $499 to $899 ($999 retail). For institutional purchase, the prices of $249 and $499 respectively remain the same for Leopard Server.

It's the same deal at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Although, the bookstore here sells all of the Apple software for the departmental prices, so Leopard will still be $69 through the bookstore.

Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard and its 300-plus new features and innovations are coming Oct. 26, 2007.

If you buy a qualifying Mac between October 1, 2007 and December 29, 2007, and it does not include Mac OS X Leopard, you’re eligible to get Leopard after it’s released for just $9.95 plus tax.

Great! I bought an imac on September 30th! One of my iphone rebate codes didn't work when I bought it, so I figured I'd get Leopard with it as the salesman said education price is $69 (imac is for my student daughter and son).
Well, double screwed I guess!
Sweet!

So am I, and so have I, but that doesn't change my opinion on the difference between theft of physical property and duplication of intellectual property. One is illegal because it is wrong, and one is illegal because we deem it beneficial to be.

What?.. so physical theft and copyright infringement are two different things legally.

So you are justifying copyright infringement because it is a "social choice"?...

We are dealing in an age of digital commerce, where physical products change hands less and less. We need to grow up and admit that copyright infringement may not be "theft" by the legal definition, but it still is "stealing" by any honest moral convention.

I call bull on this whole argument that ph0rk and others are presenting here.

If you thought I was being fully serious when I opened my argument with a mention of how much beer $36 was.... ;)

I reiterate that I am irked, and I know there are some students out there worse off than I (like in the humanities). They'll likely pirate eventually or do without, but no differently than they would have done if the pricer were $79, chances are.

Beer is a necessity though. Really.

I was ready to be upset when I read about the price hike for students. For those that say that 40 bucks isn't that big of a deal, well, you're wrong. I am in actual classes 32 hours a week and I'm expected to spend at least another 40 in the studio working on projects. (ahh art school, believe me, its not for the lazy) This negates being able to do anything besides work study which they limit income to 1,000 a year. So I live off that and student loans because despite my grants and scholarships of 20K, the school is another 6,000 plus living expenses.

For me, 69/79 bucks was just squeaking by, and I wasn't planning on buying right away (let others beta test). 116 is even further out of my current budget.

BUT

I might be able to swing the ADC student discount of 99. Might. We'll see how my finances are at the end of the term. Plus I'll check out my school's tech department and see if its cheaper there. The bonuses with ADC are worth 20 bucks to me, and hopefully after next summer I'll have worked enough to be able to afford a laptop with ADC discount.

Wow this thread is moving so fast there's a new page every click...

one question, Im not using iChat at this time but will i be able to use all the new features such as desktop sharing with an free AIM account, or do i have to get .mac?

You should be able to use desktop sharing (through iChat) with an AIM account, but it'll only be to other iChat users (regardless of what login they use).

You may even get it in the late afternoon on the 25th. But you will get it before the store sells it!

I ordered mine and I am happy to see it will be delivered on the 26th... and seeing as I am in HK that's effectively the 25th for you guys. Can't wait.

When you click to look at all of the '300 New Features', resolution independence isn't one of them. It certainly isn't listed in the Graphics section. And I read over the whole list twice and didn't see it.

This was discussed in other threads, resolution independence is there, under the hood, but disabled unless you use the developer tools and turn it on. This is for many reasons but the best reason is that no apps actually support it, so if you tried it out it'd fail terribly in most things.

The idea is it will be turned on in an incremental update when Apple ships really large screens or more applications support it so it's worth it.

So tabbed Finder browsing is out?

Was it ever in ?

i present you an answer to your statement...

Being a student, I know that the extra $40 is a lot. I worked part time for almost a year just so that I can afford to buy a MBP- and I was proudly able to do so.

I worked a lot more to purchase a used car, and I am still working my butt off to pay for car insurance and gas- and other bills.

All my parents pay for are the meals- $100 a month. Thankfully I was able to get a scholarship to pay for tuition and rent.

So yes, $40 is a little too much when I am living on a shoestring budget....

With the $40 I can fill up my car to last me for two weeks...

I do agree that there are students who are living totally off their parents' money and they may not have a justifiable reason to whine, but for students who are earning on their own- I believe they do have a reason to whine.

u obviously forgot to take into account the students who are in because of financial aids... not everyone is a whiny b!tch.

anyone know why the edu is not 70-im just curious as to why it is-Could it be because of the pre-ordering and after the 26th it will go to 70? I will still be getting it, im just surprised as to why its not the same as in previous years

Those are some scary expenses.

I spent $250 on textbooks for all of my classes.

I'll just get Leopard on a new machine. It was the best idea to wait for the release anyways.

Actually, the steadily shrinking student discount on other Apple products should have been a signal to folks. The handwriting WAS on the wall....

The USA does have sales tax but, for some bizarre reason, it's added at the point of sale. I think it varies from state to state, too.

My interpretation is that North American consumers have the benefit of knowing in every situation exactly how much of their purchase dollars are actually going to the people providing the product or service, and how much is being grabbed back by the government. It puts it in your face, and hopefully leads us to demand more accountability from our our lawmakers in the way they spend our money.

Personally, I'd hate to see (or not see!) the taxes buried away inside the list price.

Heh, I'm in the same boat as you. I ordered on September 29th ... although the computer itself was delivered only four days ago.

i'm just more irritated that it's a direct shot at the education discount and that's all. the full price is still the full price. Tiger's $129 is Leopard's $129. they limited the education pricing to 2 pieces of software a year, it's not like i could go to my bookstore and buy 10 copies for all my buddies.

Actually, the steadily shrinking student discount on other Apple products should have been a signal to folks. The handwriting WAS on the wall....

And that has to do with the "other" student discount: someone gets the student discount and then gives their friend the "student discount" and they give their friends the "student discount" and so on and so on...

Just spoke to a representative at my campus bookstore, and he said that they will sell it for $69, so that's where I'm going to pick my copy up. :D

I'm a student at two universities, and the people at the bookstores at both schools tell me this morning that they can still sell Tiger for $69, but that Leopard is $116.
