bull crap
Sure, a student might make 64 dollars a day at a part-time student job while going to school, but that ignores the entire social support structure (family and government) that got them there in the first place.
Do you really expect us to believe that you are saving up the pennies (after buying food and shelter) from this tiny wage to also pay your tuition, books etc. for the following year? That money, and the money to get you enrolled for this semester, buy your books, etc. obviously comes from somewhere else and isn't included in your calculations presented here.
Also I have worked at a major University for over 15 years now and I have yet to see any "poor" students. Anyone that can afford to attend at all, can certainly afford a 36 dollar price increase. Course-books alone cost usually about 200 - 400 bucks a *course*.
Thirty-six bucks, (or even 116), is (relatively) small beans compared to all the other huge costs of a University education and talk about eschewing Leopard because of the price increase is absolutely ridiculous.
Sure, it would have been nice if the price stayed the same, or if they had given more warning about it, but to make out like this is some great financial hardship is just the biggest pile of bull I have heard in a long time. You are a first-world, upper-middle class, "rich" kid by definition if you are in University at all.
Get over yourself.
If you can't pay the extra, then steal your software like most University students do. Just don't expect whatever you chose to do to be justified in any way by a simple 36 dollar price increase. No one is twisting your arm, or denying you your rights, or forcing you to do anything at all here.
I call bull on this whole argument that ph0rk and others are presenting here.Or I spend what I would spend on food for about 7-10 days on it. You assume the full $64/day is disposable and that there isn't a potentially three month long rainy day to save for.
I am actually mildly surprised at the smug counter-whining. I suppose people don't realize that the truly spoiled entitlement-issue kids don't even look at price tags anyway.
