I don't believe he was suggesting that we prosecute copyright infringement as theft. I do applaud you for the slippery slope, are you trying to prove my point? You should argue, not bully.

If he wasn't suggesting it, he should have been, to be consistent with his own position. It is a logical step.

For me, 69/79 bucks was just squeaking by, and I wasn't planning on buying right away (let others beta test). 116 is even further out of my current budget.

As I said earlier, there is NO REASON for you to spend $69/79 for Leopard in your situation. I sure wouldn't have back when I lived your life.

Be smarter with your money. Leopard is cool, but it's not worth that percentage of your income! The fact that you were considering it before this price change was a mistake. All Apple did here was save you from yourself. I lived with OS9 for quite awhile because of this philosophy, so I don't have much sympathy for people who think they have to have time machine.

To all the whining students: Shut up, you're giving us a bad name. Either suck it up and pay the price Apple gives you or just use what you have. Tiger won't die on Oct 26. Just be glad they're not charging $400 like some people.

And that has to do with the "other" student discount: someone gets the student discount and then gives their friend the "student discount" and they give their friends the "student discount" and so on and so on...

I'd be happy with the old discount and people being either physically present at an apple store or through a university login.

Apple would have to keep track of the purchases per year, though.

It's official, Apple hates students.

And since Microsoft no longer requires you to be a student to get the Office Home and Student edition, they love students AND regular "home" people!

Aha!:p

Major windows update comes once a couple of years.
Mac is like within 2 years. Do the math.

Windows is also releasing dated technology, few exceptions however majority of it is dated.

Mac OS X on the other hand is paving the way, though a few things were bound to be borrowed to be implemented its still way ahead of the general user competition.

By the sound of it you are one of those individuals who wants to be ahead of the crowd and that cost money my friend.

The rise in the student discount could mean that more resources were and are required which is a good thing when a company wants to stay ahead.

There is nothing wrong with OS 10.4 (PPC/X86). :)

i'm just more irritated that it's a direct shot at the education discount and that's all. the full price is still the full price. Tiger's $129 is Leopard's $129. they limited the education pricing to 2 pieces of software a year, it's not like i could go to my bookstore and buy 10 copies for all my buddies.

However you could lend Leopard to your buddies (though not saying you would).

Well i just got done chatting with someone on the Apple Online Chat and they said that the link to the Cornell price is because of a custom store.

The pricing for a custom store can be different from the normal edu stores. She wouldn't/couldn't give me a reason, so I am not happy with this new information.

Am dying to buy my new MacBook and seeing as I can update to Leopard for £5.95 is it worth buying it with Tiger and have the stability and wait until the 10.5.x releases start to surface until I upgrade?
Thanks

Just ordered my student copy over the phone (£58) but I still will be going to the store as it is only five minutes away from my campus to join in the party and have leopard already installed on my machine :D Happy Days :) :apple:

"I can get Vista Ultimate for $10 through my university. Not that I'd want to, but still."

Sounds like the market is saying that Vista Ultimate is overpriced at $10.

it is more we where expecting it to be around the same price as it been in the past. I had budgeted to for around a $80 edu price. It was a very safe assumption since apple always done it in the past.

But Apple blind sided students with increasing the price by over 50% that is why students are up in arms about it. It screws over a lot of careful budgeting that took the cost of the OS into account.

Now do people understand why students are complaining. It a very unexpected price jump that no one saw coming. It is a nice slap in the face apple is giving students. They are taking money from people who can not afford it.

That's really the issue. It is a surprise and break from the past. This does go along with several other "breaks from the past" that are upsetting people.

If the issue was abuse, tighten the rules, don't treat all people as abusers. Teachers spend money from their pockets to cover costs that aren't covered by the schools. Teachers are woefully underpaid. Apple doesn't "owe" anyone anything, but the bigger discount was a nice way to get good software in the hands of people that use it and deserve the break. $13 is not much of a discount for people that can use it.

Bottom line, it is a big change in corporate policy and one that came as a surprise.

What more information do you need? Cornell is subsidizing the price.

Personally, I'd hate to see (or not see!) the taxes buried away inside the list price.

This is already done in most European countries. Makes it convenient when you do not have to calculate the tax on an item and just figure out that 1 = 1 and not 1 = 1.09 :)

Both schools I go to have custom stores, and both list the price as $116. My mom is a school teacher, and her school district's store lists the price as $116 also.

my .02

apple seems to be loosing focus...

we'll see how good or bad the os is and how functional it is... delay the os - delay new towers - delay etc...

+ then the edu has basically gone on ipods and the os...

+ some stock computers are cheaper to get from online sources (edu discount not so great)

+ steve pulling a fast one on the early iphone adopters

+ + +

just not what i thought they were.....

apple only - not apple computers

-----

for me --

i'm waitting for the next mac pro that will have ilfe and the new os installed

(first time - i won't pre purchase the os)

If it was $69 (edu price) - I'd do it btw

they just don't seem to care anymore...

btw - same with the starbuck in my area... taking a dive in customer caring - quality - goodwill

(loyal mac fan since '92)

After seeing the Education Price, the best deal for Leopard seems to be the Student ADC kit for only $99. If the release of Tiger is any indication, with the ADC subscription you can download the release DVD image of Leopard by this Friday from the ADC site and then get the disk in the monthly mailing sometime in November. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I really don't care about the student discount decreasing....

As a student we already get enough bloody discounts we're spoilt for choice :|

I'm a student at two universities, and the people at the bookstores at both schools tell me this morning that they can still sell Tiger for $69, but that Leopard is $116.

Interesting. I know that my bookstore also sells all other Apple software (Aperture, FCS2, Garageband Jam Packs, etc.) for less than the Online Education store, both the generic and University of Minnesota custom store.

Cornell, ever heard of it?

"The pricing for a custom store can be different from the normal edu stores. She wouldn't/couldn't give me a reason, so I am not happy with this new information."

Apple pays a sales team to work with that institution. Apple sets an aggressive price in return for volume committments from that institution. They then build a custom store for that institution, allowing access to the price and tracking of the volume.

Not new information, and nothing to get unhappy about. THIS IS NOT A FLAME

LOVE this new feature:

Let your grammar set a shining example. A built-in English language grammar checker helps ensure that you don’t make errors in grammar.

Hopefully it's integrated into online forums.
Now if only there was a Whine Checker and a Circular Argument Zapper, this thread would be readable.

Sorry if this has been brought up already, but with 12 pages of comments I've only skipped through them. But here goes anyway...

The US store says "delivery ON October 26th"

The UK store says "free shipping BY October 26th"

Without eating a dictionary this looks to be a subtle but important difference. I've pre-ordered here in the UK and am hoping that my package will arrive on the Friday or the Saturday but have a sinking feeling that it won't be until some time the next week ie. very late October or early November.

Ho hum... waited this long, a few more days shouldn't be a problem.
