I really don't care about the student discount decreasing....
As a student we already get enough bloody discounts we're spoilt for choice :|
Student discounts stimulate said market to thrive. The narrowing discount means 1 of 2 things:
1)

2)

Here's your problem right here.... The lame student discount feels like another stab in the back ...
I'm not going to, BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD IT.
I went and bought this expensive ****ing apple computer partially because they usually are good to students, but now they're pretty much saying "**** you".
$40 is a lot of money to someone who has little income and lots of expenses ($500+ in books a semester, spending money for food).
Can I pre-order the OS online and pick it up in the store? That would be nice![]()
exactly. If apple had given early warning about it would of been helpful. But just taking it away completely out of the blue hurts. Students where expecting it to be at most $80. The price keeping in line with what it been in the past.
)
I agree, what a happened? When iLife 08 and iWork 08 came out I expected a big Education discount...it was only $8. I was excited about the new operating system, expecting to pay $69...now it is $116. What gives????
Cornell (says at the top of the page). I'm not sure why apple is doing this variable pricing thing- I guess we are just lucky!
I inquired about it and the reply was NO.![]()
Cornell, ever heard of it?

"The pricing for a custom store can be different from the normal edu stores. She wouldn't/couldn't give me a reason, so I am not happy with this new information."
Apple pays a sales team to work with that institution. Apple sets an aggressive price in return for volume committments from that institution. They then build a custom store for that institution, allowing access to the price and tracking of the volume.
Not new informatin, and nothing to get unhappy about.
Hey, guess what, not everyone has rolls of money to spend on everything. Sure, i have a MacBook Pro. Doesnt mean i can afford those $250 Oakley sunglasses i want. Or a trip to SF/LA to visit a few people. Or a $120 OS upgrade.
What computer you have is hardly indicative of your finances.
I'm not exactly sure what everyone is complaining about, I just got Leopard for a student price of $69.00...
I can confirm this. Here at UofM they have a price for private purchases ($116) and institutional purchases ($69).

"Teachers are woefully underpaid."
Woefully false.
If true, we would see scores of unfilled teaching positions, since the wage would not draw an adequate pool of workers to fill the positions.
Instead, we see scores of teachers competing for few positions, since the wage is more than sufficient to draw a surplus of workers seeking to fill the positions.
The dirty little secret that we all know is that the College of Education is the academic slum of most universities, and that leads to an oversupply of "qualified" teachers, and depresses the price.
Want higher teacher pay? Raise the qualifications until there are not enough qualified teachers to fill the positions. That's how equilibrium prices shift.
Little course called "Microeconomics 101" explains it better than I.
Does apple charge your card before shipping?
Makes for some good reading http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html
I've searched throughout this thread and i guess the discount is the main topic, so...
If you preorder when are you most likely to receive it in the mail? It says delivery on the 26th, but wont that defeat the purpose of the 6pm scene?
If you preordered Tiger, when did you receive it?
