I still can not understand how people do not understand why the students are complaining. It like you took your car in to get a repair job and where told it cost you 500 bucks. You go back the next day and are not told you own 1000 bucks. You had budgeted and planned on spending 500 to fix ones car but 1000 is going to screw over the budgeting completely. (yes I am using it as example but it should make the point)

That's a ridiculous analogy. Budgeting your costs based on an assumed discount is completely stupid. You should be grateful that there's any discount at all. Apple does not owe students anything. Initial low prices were part of aggressive marketing strategies, which obviously worked.

"I'd argue that the positions are still not compensated enough - couldn't increasing teacher pay then result in more competition (and eventually, better-qualified teachers?)"

Raising the pay without raising the qualifications would be foolish, with low or no impact. Don't get me wrong... that's what will happen, and when it doesn't work, we'll just lament that we didn't raise the pay enough!

If anyone cared to fix it, raise the qualifications, disqualify a great number of candidates, hire only better candidates, who could demand increased wages due to the lower number of qualified replacements.

"Going the route you suggest would probably negatively impact public education in the short term."

Probably not, but there are folks betting their careers that no one will understand why.

Capitalism. Works every time it's tried.

Wow, I guess this thread has taught us something - students are a bunch of spoiled brats.

Waah! Apple owes you huge discounts just because they did in the past?!? Why?

Seriously, the sense of self-entitlement here is astounding. It's not like Leopard is a necessity. Can you not do your coursework on Tiger? If you want Leopard, pay for it like everyone else has to. You all should be thankful you have a discount at all.

Humans are funny

In life, sometimes expectations are not congruent with reality and yet that fact always seems to surprise some people.

Apple releases a great new OS, at a great price and still people find reasons to complain.
It never ceases to amaze me the heights some peoples expectations and sense of entitlement reaches.

Agony! I left my debit card at home, and neither of the 2 credit cards I have with me are working (receive an unable to authorize message). I can't preorder until I get home. Urggh! :(

Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing against it. I suppose I just have a mental image of a poor implementation where schools are drastically short teachers immediately after a qualifications increase.

Abolishing graduate degrees in education would likely go a long way, too. God forbid that teachers have a masters degree in the actual discipline they will teach, rather than a degree in how to teach that discipline.

I suppose someone else will call me a prick here, too, but to hell with it. I think colleges of ed are the devil.

Education Pricing Strategy

Apple is really pulling back on the education discounts.

Logic: $499 vs. $449 ($50 discount)
iMac (20") : $1199 vs. $1149 ($50 discount)
MacBook: $1099 vs $999 ($100 discount)
iLife: $79 vs $71 ($8 discount)

Traditionally Apple has offered more than 10% discount on items especially software. I scraped together enough money to get Final Cut at $699. I probably wouldn't have if it was at $1169 (10% off $1299)

If Apple is worried about people ordering from the education stores and not being legit education customers, how about actually verifying customers? Currently you don't have to verify that you are an education customer to order from the on-line education store.

Upgrade Pricing

Doesnt apple usually give a discounted price for people who bought previous versions of OSX?

How can you not see me worrying about 36 extra dollars? How do you know if I have some relatives that have money but I don't have any money at all? I'm working at minimum wage as a student employee, which limits me to 25 hours a week maximum, and cannot afford to even replace the iBook's battery which is shot.

if you got the ibook in the last year or two, that would be different. Old laptops are obviously a different animal than a new MBP.

The flip argument is: if you couldn't afford a new battery, you can't even afford Leopard at $79. I was there a few years ago - suffering with a PB145 (yes) with about 15 minutes of battery life. Of course, I didn't pay for new OS versions then, though.

Now, the other dude with the SR MBP - that's funny.

Loaded up boot camp - love my $2600 iMac. Now I have to spend MORE $$$ or boot camp wont work? WTF? Apple's site says boot camp will be disabled on Tiger when Leopard is released. The Apple store folks did not tell me Boot Camp would expire, when I clearly told them I would be installing Windows with Boot Camp. Does anything think I have recourse?

Bootcamp was release as a beta. Apple did not hide that fact at all. Nor did they hide the fact that the free public beta period would end when 10.5 came out.

10.5 should have added virtualization integral!

I still cannot believe Apple has not built-in virtualization at the OS level -- would have been nice to see VMWare integral...

Really? Then let's look at it from a different way, because I don't believe it's this whole "sense of entitlement" that you do.

What if they had a senior citizen discount like many businesses here in the US, and instead of keeping the same price they've had for years, decide to nearly double the cost? Do you think senior citizens would just sit around and be happy about it?

It's not a sense of entitlement, but instead a total change in business practice towards one of the biggest demographics that have contributed to Apple's success.

If I order today?

If i order today, are they saying that it will be delievered to my doorstep on the 26th or will it just ship on the 26th?

At my school, software is discounted substantially even from the regular Apple education discount. For example, I picked up a copy of iWork '08 last week for $34, I hope the same holds true for Leopard.

It is a sense of entitlement and you know why? I'm blowing away 30,000 dollars a year to educate myself. For most people, that is a year's worth of salary. I deserve a decent cut on prices because of that.

Pre-Ordering!!

I think the issue is not being understood. The non-students are irritated at the so-called students (because we don't know for sure that they really are) because the signature for many of the students read MacBook Pro and it's totally understandable for the non-students to get pissed at the students complaining.

No student "needs" a MBP unless they are studying film making or photography and needs a dedicated GPU.

Most of the students bought a MBP because they wanted a dedicated GPU for gaming and gaming is not needed for school. Some of them will hide behind the truth and say that they need a dedicated GPU for school.
Tiger runs beautifully, there's no real need for a student to upgrade unless it's for bootcamp...and bootcamp is used for Windows and those same students install Windows for what???Gaming.

Do i get it on the 26th?

If i order today, are they saying that it will be delievered to my doorstep on the 26th or will it just ship on the 26th??

Wow, thanks for doing that. You are indeed deserving.
