HA! No. You had to have purchased a new computer in the time period they state to get a discount.

Hmmm.. I'm positive I got a discount when buying Tiger, and I hadnt just bought a new computer and was not a student... (yup still have the email invoice... $79)

Seems kinda backwards that they would give a discount to recent computer purchasers, since OSX is a free bonus when you buy a computer and the version that comes with the computer is specific to that computer usually... Would make more sense to only give a discount to people who bought the full version of OSX separately...

I did buy a Macbook this year in May, prolly too long ago tho...

When you d/l'd Boot Camp the disclaimer clearly noted it was a beta version and that it would expire. Your best recourse would be to take a reading course and learn not to believe everything a store clerk tells you. If a store clerk really knew his stuff he'd be working for Apple in Cupertino, not in the mall.

Also at the top of the page were you downloaded Boot Camp it was titled "Boot Camp Public Beta".... anyone who knows anything about computers and software should know that a Beta is a 'test' version of software that is not necessarily complete or bug free and 'Beta' certainly doesn't imply that a piece of software is a ful final version for continuous use.

On the flip side, I do not believe there is anything that states that Bootcamp will not work once Leopard is released, it should continue to work just fine.. there just won't be any updates or support for it.

Do this.

Get 4 of your friends together with you. Buy the 5-seat version at $200.

That's $40 per person!!

I'm pretty sure that is against the license - unless the 4 friends are family members.

A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same household. By “household” we mean a person or persons who share the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home or condominium, but shall also extend to student members who are primary residents of that household but residing at a separate on-campus location.

Now, if they were your roommates...

If i order today, are they saying that it will be delievered to my doorstep on the 26th or will it just ship on the 26th?

Yep, same here, I'm pretty disapointed.

That's twice as much as I was planning on spending, (well, almost), and instead I think I'll purchase the ATH-ANC7 noise canceling headphones I've been wanting for a while.

Which is sad really, because I'd rather have Leopard, but I can't justify being an early adopter for that price. DISCLAIMER: I think it's a fair price, just not what I'm willing to pay for it at this point.
When will the price drop? Doesn't Tiger, which came out in April 2005, still sell for $129 in the Apple stores?

I am glad that I get flamed over going and researching a little bit on the pricing. In my opinion the edu price should be the same no matter what school you are in, unless there is something special worked out and then it will be lower than the general edu price. In the past the edu price has been $69 and now it is $116, so that is all well and good. There should have been a little bit of a fore-warning on a price increase, though I know that would be too much to ask in todays business world. I personally am not a student, I am a graphic designer and getting into photography, but my girlfriend is going to school full time and is working full time (and is still barely getting her bills paid).

No one had gone to Apple and asked the question so I figured I would and get an answer for those that didn't have the time to do such.

Christopher

You have been fore-warned.. its not available today, is it? You've got 10 days advance notice of the pricing structure.

Posting the same question 3 times in a row 2 mins apart each with different titles is no way to get your questions answered....

I dont think anyone except Apple knows the definite answer to this, but the wording on the order page "Ships: Delivers on October 26th" implies that you will receive it on the 26th...

If you are that concerned with receiving it on that date go to a local apple store...

Please stop posting same question

According to posters who ordered their copy today, It is supposed to be delivered on the 26th, some people reported with Tiger they got it the day before. You will probably get it sooner that when the stores release Leopard.

Switched2aMac

Darn Swytch beat me to it

Student Discount

My school (UCSD) bookstore is still promoting the edu price @ $69. I pre-ordered with them, and since I know the manager I will be holding her to the advertised price. Hopefully, this practice will be mirrored at US bookstores, even if online or applestore pricing rises to the higher 110+ number.

(sorry if this had been posted before, 23 pages is a lot to wade through)

I think the issue is not being understood. The non-students are irritated at the so-called students (because we don't know for sure that they really are) because the signature for many of the students read MacBook Pro and it's totally understandable for the non-students to get pissed at the students complaining.

No student "needs" a MBP unless they are studying film making or photography and needs a dedicated GPU.

Most of the students bought a MBP because they wanted a dedicated GPU for gaming and gaming is not needed for school. Some of them will hide behind the truth and say that they need a dedicated GPU for school.
Tiger runs beautifully, there's no real need for a student to upgrade unless it's for bootcamp...and bootcamp is used for Windows and those same students install Windows for what???Gaming.

So who or what am I hiding from? I do not study film, nor do I make photography, and above all, I have never once played a game on my MBP in the 19 months I have had it. However, I do thoroughly enjoy writing my thesis on a 15" screen and typing on a decent keyboard. If there is no real reason to upgrade for students, what reason exists for the home user? There might not be a necessary reason to upgrade, but compelling enough for me is the fact that I want the best Mac experience possible. For that reason I will be picking up a copy of Leopard on the 26th.

"I can get Vista Ultimate for $10 through my university. Not that I'd want to, but still."

Sounds like the market is saying that Vista Ultimate is overpriced at $10.

Wow, Vista is that horrible that Microsoft is practically giving it away for free. The $10 is probably for the physical disc, packaging, printed material and shipping. :D

I keep seeing questions about when will people receive Leopard..Can a mod or arn please edit the topic to include this fact?

If you pre-order Leopard now it will arrive at your door on Oct.26th.

Are you telling me that you do not utilize Front Row with the Apple Remote, and all the other hardware goodies that are included i.e. lighted keyboard. :)

Yes - according to Apple it will be delivered ON 10/26.

(Thats for the US, I can't vouch for other countries).

And of course there is always the possibility of a delay on the shippers end but from my experience w/ apple shipping in the past I'm comfortable setting my expecation for it to be at my house on the 26th when I get home from work.

My only disappointment is that Time Machine use a external drive, with the hardrive coming to 1TB for a laptop, there is no need to bring a external drive. And Apple is poisoning its students consumers I think ,for decades , Steve Jobs has been with the education side , it's a murder to make a 116$ for educational discount, and the back to school program is just to be a way to get their recent iPod Nano out of stock ,so they can sell new ones.

As the education market growing so fast for The Mac, Apple should really think about his way to tread his educationally customers

I disagree.

I started Grad School this semester and I am *amazed* at what undergraduates are required to buy. I thought that I got raped when I started undergrad in 1994, but it's wayy worse now. Everyone is *required* to have a computer, and if you're in the sciences, then that computer better be able to handle some serious applications. As of now, if you're in the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota, you're putting Mathematica and Matlab on your computer. On top that, you're also probably putting some other things on there specifically designed for mathematics, statistics, or engineering.

And for those of you slamming students, I have been absolutely *shocked* at what Universities are getting away with these days in these "required" purchases and fees. My bill this semester was $6,121 - $5k for tuition and $1,121 in University fees, Student Services Fees, Institute of Technology fees, Transportation fees, and Grad student assembly fees. Absolutely outrageous. And textbooks, since I went to undergrad, have almost TRIPLED!! And I have the proof with some of my undergrad textbooks with the price sticker still on there.

It may appear to you that students are "spoiled brats", but you would be too if you were raped at every corner by your school trying to extract every last penny out of you so the football team can get new helmets.

Sorry, my rant is over.

Well, I won't tell Apple that some friends arranged theirselves and bought it to get the pack discount. I think that is fair enough, and far away better than downloading it for free.

In fact, i'll probably do it too...

One will land you in prison, the other with a lawsuit. I'm not saying copyright infringement is OK, but please don't buy into the copyright lobbyist nonsense that it is "stealing", like that offensive movie piracy ad that is on all of my DVDs.

Actually both could land you in jail... It's just that one is more obvious to law enforcement than the other. But believe me if the cops can prove that you copied a movie except what is allowed by law (one backup for archival purposes) they would charge you with theft. Unfortunately they would have a very hard time enforcing that law.
