This is criminal of Apple to do. If their reasoning is that non-students were abusing their policy, they can only blame their policy which required no ID when ordering online...

I'm going to the Apple store on Friday with my student id. If they don't sell me a copy for $69, then I'll just borrow a copy from someone.

HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHHAAHAH!!!!!!!!!!

You've got to be kidding me. Are you actually serious? You seem serious. There is no way, book or moral, that this can be considered criminal activity on the part of Apple. Rather, its criminal of those who abuse Apple's kindness and trust to not have them ask for ID. Apple has every right to decrease their generosity if they are losing revenue because people are dishonest and receive the student discount.

Show me where in your university (or JC) handbook where it states that you are entitled to a fixed discount on Apple Software, or any kind of software. I seriously doubt you can, which in turns shows that Apple is not robbing you of any rights to a discount. Therefore, no criminal activity

And you have the nerve to say that Apple is criminal for decreasing the discount on Leopard, when you're willing to "borrow" a copy from someone and install it on your computer without payment.

And ANOTHER THING, they don't honor the student discount inside a brick & mortar Apple Store for operating systems, you need to do the purchase online to get the student discount. I know this because I have tried for both Panther and Tiger, and you can only get the student discount online.

Good luck with your criminal and civil morals, because you obviously have them mixed up

Thanks :D I ordered mine with the educational discount. Not much of a discount but hey might as well use it. Going to uni must count for something :)

It is a sense of entitlement and you know why? I'm blowing away 30,000 dollars a year to educate myself. For most people, that is a year's worth of salary. I deserve a decent cut on prices because of that.

You're being sarcastic, right?

I'm really looking forward to iChat screen sharing... that will make for some productive cross-country meetings, I tell you. Especially combined with iSight. Yow!:D

Being a student, I know that the extra $40 is a lot. I worked part time for almost a year just so that I can afford to buy a MBP- and I was proudly able to do so.

I worked a lot more to purchase a used car, and I am still working my butt off to pay for car insurance and gas- and other bills.

All my parents pay for are the meals- $100 a month. Thankfully I was able to get a scholarship to pay for tuition and rent.

So yes, $40 is a little too much when I am living on a shoestring budget....

With the $40 I can fill up my car to last me for two weeks...

I do agree that there are students who are living totally off their parents' money and they may not have a justifiable reason to whine, but for students who are earning on their own- I believe they do have a reason to whine.

Aww poor student, did you actually work your butt off as well for the 2 iPods you have as well in your signature?? Pay for Leopard and be quiet. :p

I pre-ordered leopard!! Woo-hoo I am so pumped. I am a brand new Mac user...and what a great time to make the switch.

The only major problem I have with the current OS is iChat...which is sorely lacking in features.

$129 in US.

$173 in UK.

Apple is beginning to piss me off big time.

No, it is not $173 in the UK. It is £85. Of that £85, £13 is taxes. If you try to buy Leopard in any Apple Store in the UK with $173 in your grubby little hands, they will send you straight to the nearest bank where you can try to exchange the dollars into some real currency.

On the other hand, if you try to buy Leopard in any Apple Store in the USA with $129 in your fingers, guess what happens? They will send you off to get some more money, because the state sales tax is not included in the $129 price.

Has anyone read the 300 new features page?

Yes. Was I the only one to think of....

THE SCENE - A grecian villa. Apple employees are tossing boxes of Windows Vista (various versions) into a large pit.

Steve Balmer: "This is madness!"

Steve Jobs: "NO! This is Leopard!"

By installing a single license OS on more than one computer, are you really breaking the law or are you just breaking the company's policy; in this case Apple?

It is copyright infringement, so it is breaking the law. Apple could take civil action against you and sue for damages (including statutory damages between $750 and $150,000). It is not a crime, unless you do more severe things like running an "install-leopard-for-$50-in-cash" service. So it wouldn't be the police coming after you, just Apple.

When you buy software, then by law you have the right to make the copies required to make use of the software (like installing it on _one_ harddisk, any copies that your computer makes in RAM when it executes the code etc.) and a backup copy. You usually have a license that can restrict or extend your rights.

Making a second copy without permission of the copyright holder is copyright infringement. Should you buy Leopard and install a single copy on a PC (against the EULA), that would _not_ be copyright infringement, that would be breach of contract; the contract that you made with Apple when you bought Leopard. Or if you bought a student copy when you are not a student, that would likely be fraud, but not copyright infringement.

Time is relative

If you want to speedup the time till Leopard is released, just go from the apple.de startpage to another and back a few times ...

The result (on my computer): the countdown runs about 10 times faster :D

Thats magic

Thats time machine 7.0, hehe :apple:

Cheers!

See you've been refining this image, and for the better.

I just bought my pre-order. It would be cool to go to the Apple Store but since it will be delivered the same day I might as well avoid the rush. :) (& you get free shipping so you don't have much reason not to buy it online)

Want to talk about mad lol 129 for a new OS as good as it will be, I am jumpin for JOY

But I'm hoping to get a free T-shirt...

Doesnt apple usually give a discounted price for people who bought previous versions of OSX?

Yes. The upgrade price is $129 in the USA, £85 in the UK.

Everybody buying the retail version of Leopard has already bought a previous version of MacOS X.
