I was having issues with the Health app not logging my cycling. Anyone else having this issue? Steps, distance, and stairs all appear to be working fine. Still hoping for MapMyRide integration

Why build an app to replace the health app?.

A better user interface, most likely. The health app seems alright, but the charts aren't very interactive (I can't see specific numbers for example, only the ones on the scale.) I can't look at specific date ranges and other stuff like that.

I don't know if this app is actually any better, but that would be the general idea.

I can't wait to start using :apple: Watch. Hopefully it works well for fitness. I lost my Fitbit Force after taking it off when i finished a 5k color run. They discontinued the Fitbit Force and I've missed that thing since. I've been waiting for :apple: Watch and I hope it does not disappoint.

Bummer! I love my Fitbit Force, but I am excited about the Apple Watch too.

Did anyone else have the previous steps and activity deleted with the update?

My previous steps data wasn't showing up on the Dashboard of the Health app. However, the data was still shown if I went into "Show All Data" for Steps. If your data is still shown in the "Show All Data" screen, you might want to try this:

Try to reset all settings, which will not delete any data from your iPhone and resolves most software related issues. However it will remove all saved wifi networks, any TouchID fingerprints, VPN, and reset your sound settings back to default.

To do this go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings

Once the phone reboots, you should see your Health app populated with your data again.

I don't think it's an elevator "bug." I know the Fitbit uses changes in elevation to determine flights of stairs, so if the phone works the same way, then all it takes is a 10' increase in elevation in a short distance to indicate a flight of stairs.

Thanks, it looks like the data is still there. I might try to reset the settings later on today, once I get home.

Yes, it would be really great though if it could differentiate between actually climbing stairs and taking the elevator. It tells me that I climbed 12 floors on Wednesday. I most definitely didn't. I climbed 3. All the rest was the elevator.

That's pretty odd, unless you were jogging in the elevator :p

I certainly didn't. Like I said, it can't tell the difference between stairs and the elevator.

It's also quite annoying that it creates a large number of datapoints per minute for walking. When I take a long walk, I'd like to ideally see a single datapoint for it at the end, because I would actually like to see how much I walked and not a few hundred data points for 10m each.

I feel like I remember reading that the elevation changes are measured with a "relative barometer" which uses changes in pressure. I feel like the only way it would be able to distinguish between elevator and stairs is if it only counted stairs if there were simultaneous changes in pressure AND steps. Not sure if this is how the app functions though.

It makes sense from a raw data perspective to have so many data points. Third-party apps will handle the raw data and the more the better.
Yes, I can see the advantage of having a large number of datapoints, but it would be nice if there was a way to display them aggregated, e.g. if I could "pinch to zoom" in the data point list to show more or less data.

I will have a look at Moves. Thanks for the hint.

How did you check that? Not trolling, actually curious. I did get a pop up asking if I want to provide the app access to motion data, which I wrote off as collateral evidence that it is at least tapping into the M8. I am not sure if the app showing up in 'sources' actually signifies healthkit integration.

Actually on opening the app, the Health permissions screen opens which asks users to individually enable access to health statistics. This was missing from RunKeeper.

Also, in the Health app there was no mention of RunKeeper in sources. Add to that the absence of any information from RunKeeper's side regarding integration with HealthKit.

The Health app might not record cycling—if not then you'll need a third-party app. IIRC Moves detects and logs cycling. If they don't integrate with HealthKit I'm sure there'll be another app that will.

You would expect that for Health to log your movement as climbing flights of stairs that it would also require you to be walking. Standing still but elevating certainly shouldn't be counted. So perhaps it's not a bug, but poorly programmed detection.

I'm also curious as to how you quantify flights of stairs. From what I've seen it seems Health would consider 10 steps and 100 steps to be equal

Yeah, from the keynote it seemed it would track cycling without a third-party app, but so far that hasn't been the case. I haven't been able to test it since updating to iOS 8.0.2, but I'm hoping MapMyRide+ will be updated to include HealthKit integration soon.

The more I think about it, it seems Health may just be there for a quick (and necessary as the first app to interface with HealthKit) overview of all your data, and that Apple expects third-party developers to do most of the work. The app is actually extremely simple. I guess if you want in-depth information about your walking with pinch to zoom graphs etc. then there'll be an app for that!

This theory would also fit with why Apple would allow Health competitors onto the App Store.

Yes, I'd hope the app would be smart enough to recognize walking during pressure changes, but it doesn't seem to be the case right now. Of course, I could just switch to always taking the stairs, that would fix the issue. But taking the stairs with the baby stroller is not a very pleasant kind of exercise. :D

Why build an app to replace the health app?.

Why build an app to replace the notes app? Why build an app to replace the email app? Why build an app to replace the browser app? Why build an app to replace the podcasts app? Why build an app to replace the camera/photos apps?

To add more functionality and value to the user experience, and then ideally make money off of that differentiation.

This is just my anecdotal evidence but I've been up and down an elevator four times today while carrying my phone, and these trips were not logged as flights climbed.

Is there a thread keeping track of HealthKit compatible apps? I imagine it will be some time before Apple has a list of Health apps featured in the App Store.

I thought you need to pair you iPhone with the Apple Watch in order for Health apps to be really useful. I'll not carry my phone every minute during the day, so the steps are definitely wrong.

Is trust an app avaliable that you can enter you meal from a restruant and it pulls all the nutrition info including Cal,fat, vitamins, extra?

Basically a database of food information.
