A lot of electronics have a big sticker on the outside of the box saying "batteries not included" or printers with "USB cable not included"

And yet we don't have people with pitchforks and torches gathering outside their corporate headquarters. Where are all the complaints about "selling incomplete products" with them?

Like I said earlier... I'd be fine if phones were sold without chargers and cables in the box. Let me buy the ones I actually want (or I'll use the ones I already have)

God forbid you have to go to ANY store on Earth to buy a cable or charger... or AA batteries for your child's toy.

:p

There isn’t an iPhone that can’t be charged with usb a to lightning. APP come with usb-c to lightning but I use the iPad 12w brick and usb a cable to charge it. I then bought an Amazon basics dual 35W usb-c charger.
I didn’t say that it couldn’t be charged over USB-A. My in laws switched from Android to iPhone right before Apple stopped including the power brick with the SE. They don’t have anything with USB-C so they didn’t have any USB C charging bricks. If they would have bought the iPhone after they took the brick out, they would not have been able to charge their new iPhones without an extra purchase.

Most devices that charge via USB do come with USB cables. Even the phone manufactures that don't include the charger boxes usually do include the cable. There are exceptions, but I can't remember the last time I bought a USB-rechargeable device that didn't come with the cable.

Hey, Apple, I know another way you can reach your environmental targets - stop releasing products like AirPods when you know they become useless pieces of plastic once the battery dies.
you know the batteries can be replaced right so not a useless piece of plastic as you say

And that goes back to my previous comment.

I don't even want the cable. I have too many cables as it is! It's just extra manufacturing and extra clutter in my house.

:)

For USB cables, I can agree. I have probably at least 30 or 40 lying around, maybe half of which work. 😂

On lightning cables, the iPhone is pretty much the only device to really use them. I never seem to have enough of them, they always fail before it's time to buy another iPhone. I appreciate that they are still including them for that reason.

The Justice Ministry in Brazil today ordered Apple to stop selling iPhones without a charger in the box, reports Reuters. Brazilian officials say that Apple is giving customers an incomplete product when the power adapter is not included with the purchase, a move the government claims is a "deliberate discriminatory practice against consumers."

Apple has been fined 12.275 million reais (~$2.34 million) for selling iPhones without chargers, and Brazilian officials are forcing the company to cease offering any iPhone that does not come with a power adapter, including the iPhone 12 and newer.

The Brazilian state of São Paulo previously fined Apple close to $2 million for not providing a charger with modern iPhones, which the São Paulo consumer protection agency said was a violation of Consumer Law Code. Apple also lost a 2022 lawsuit in the country after a customer who did not receive a charger sued.

Apple has told Brazilian officials that not including a power adapter with the iPhone offers environmental benefits and cuts down on waste, but Brazil has thus far rejected this argument.

Apple stopped providing chargers with iPhones starting with the 2020 launch of the iPhone 12 lineup. In most countries, Apple no longer ships iPhones with EarPods or a power adapter, including just a USB-C to Lightning charging cable. Apple says that most customers already have power adapters on hand to charge with, and has told customers that removing these accessories is part of its effort to "reach [its] environmental goals."

The Justice Ministry's order comes one day ahead of Apple's iPhone 14 announcement, which will see the debut of updated iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models.

Update 1:40 p.m.: In a statement to Bloomberg, Apple says it will appeal the ruling:

I’ll accept Apples argument for not supplying a charger if, I can take my old charger in for recycling and be issued a new charger for free. That way I’m not collecting phone chargers and I’m helping the environment just like Apple.

That seems like a good idea. How about when you are ordering online you have the option to include a basic charger, for free.
Yes, they should do it like mba, so when ordering:
Free 5w charger voucher/shipped with iPhone
+$9.99 20w charger
+$19.99 wireless charger
+$49.99 3-in-1 charging stand

But knowing Apple, next they will announce the portless e-sim iPhone 16 so they can skip the sim ejection tool and charging cable. So the box will, um, just have an iPhone and Apple sticker.

I'm not even convinced it actually cut down waste. They switched the included cable to USB-C -> Lightning rather than USB-A, and many people don't have extra USB-C charging bricks lying around. That resulted in a lot of people now having to buy separate chargers with their iPhones, and those of course came in their own packaging and generated more waste (and emissions from transportation) than just packaging it with the phone would have.

I'm not even quite sure why they did it. The charger can't have been expensive to manufacture and there isn't exactly a huge opportunity cost to it either (not everyone is going to buy the official Apple branded charger). It just doesn't make much sense to me.
Exactly. I had to purchase a USB-C charger considering everything I owned had USB-A including my car charger. Yes, I could continue to use these things, but fast charging capability played a significant role in having to do that. Green signalling disguising profit.

If Apple was so concerned about the environment, they would actually stop making the chargers. But they still do and sell it. It's clearly a money grab, period, and the only impact to the environment is the cost savings to Apple in shipping volume since the box is thinner.

If your child's toy or printer cost $1000, you do have the expectation of them having all the essentials included in the box.

Couple things RE: Lighting cables

You say you never have enough of them... so should Apple include 3 or 4 Lightning cables in the box? 🤣

And if they always fail... maybe it's because the included Apple-branded cables are terrible. Try Anker cables. I've got one on my desk that I've had since my iPhone 5S. Same for the one in my travel bag.

I honestly think the included 3-foot cables are borderline useless. Simply too short, in my opinion.

If you have it plugged into the wall in the kitchen... the countertop is already 2-feet deep. So if you want to use the phone while plugged in... you have to basically lean over the counter.

And god forbid you want to charge your phone on your night stand. 3-foot is definitely too short for that!

I thought that when this started, but then would you have to prove somehow you did need one, which there is no way to prove. Everyone would get one if it were free. It was more obviously a money grab because the phone price stayed the say or increased.
I am sure you’re just speaking in generalities, but I would not ask for one. I would also love an option to opt out of any / all printed product guides, stickers, etc.

My ultimate preference would be to go to the Apple Store and leave with only the device and nothing else.

Got it. There are those in the minority who may have to buy a brick of some sort. But I'm guessing Apples' thoughts are those new customers are in the minority. Switchers who get a newish phone have to get a usb c brick or usb a brick and lightning cable.

Printers are not phones. Without a proprietary power brick, one can't power a printer. Speaking where I frequent a charging brick and cable can be had in virtually most stores. And I realize we can go back and forth with the edge cases becoming the general cases.

Include it as a no cost option then instead of offering it currently at extra $ option. Solved, taco girl.gif

Is it so hard to offer a basic charger for free when customer order a phone?
