It's not about beating. It's about losing marketshare. They'll def. lose some of the apple fans

Has apple been hemmorrhaging marketshare or something? They've remained relatively steady for a year and a half... what makes you think introducing a new product is suddenly going to make them lose share?

The simplest explanation is usually the truth.

Even if you are right, and there is some correlation in the universe between the simplicity of an explanation and the probability of that explanation being true, such knowledge cannot be applied usefully until you can gauge the simplicity-quotiant of an explanation.

Simplicity depends entirely on the levels of nested context, but in practise we normally use a rule of thumb, which is something along the lines of 'complexity is proportional the number of loose ends left unexplained'.

So your suggestion that Tuesday will reveal only a 4S ( and not a 5 ), is only 'simple' if it has fewer unexplained loose ends than the suggestion that there will be a 5 as well.

One of those lose ends is based on the belief that Apple will disappoint so many people by only releasing a 4s that there will be considerable negative effect to the company.

I know that it may seem odd to put such weight onto human intuition, but personally I don't see that we have any choice. Intuition is real and cannot just be ignored because it is not as objective as other things.

So, to summarise, I think the simplest explanation is that there will be an iPhone 5 on Tuesday, because otherwise I cannot explain why Apple would, in my opinion, disappoint customers and create negative publicity for themselves.

Once I started hearing about this new "Assistant" thing, it became quite clear that what we'll see will be a modest spec upgrade (hyped, of course -- this is "100x as fast") and heavily spinned iOS 5 and some gimmickry like the Assistant. That's basically what 3GS was -- in retrospect, the additions like, oh, it can shoot videos, and do voice commands were overdue (video) and useless (voice).

No new form factor -- no iPhone. Then it is GS2 or Nexus Prime.

Ummmmm, iPhone (1) to iPhone 3g to iPhone 3Gs to iPhone 4. Your theory is blown!

So, the iPhone 3Gs should have been called the iPhone 4 by your measure. It wasn't.

No actually they had to fix their naming scheme by calling it the 3GS, because the second one was called 3G...it would not really make sense (can't deny the possibility but...) to call it 4S, when it start's out with iOS5 and has the A5 chip inside.

Why fix something if it's not broken? I can't wait to get my first iPhone!

The iPhone 4 design is very well broken.

Umm...Those two icons are not the same...

Doesn't anybody see that the one of these phones has a seam on the side of the phone that the other doesn't??? Looks like a new antenna to me...

They will release an iPhone 4s, a cheap one in order to get the lower classes and poor people to jump from Android then they will same night released a spectacular new shiny high end phone called iPhone 5 with all the latest bells and whistles, calm down everyone, there will be an iPhone 5

The lower classes? Lol, what are you from the era of the British Empire? I bet at least half of iPhone owners can't really afford one with ease.

no way that we're going back again with the same thing in iphone 3GS...

ok steve come back :apple:

Apple is gaining the marketshare the counts. It's inevitable they lose marketshare to all the $0 or dirt cheap phones that now all have android installed, but this comparison is just nonsensical for so many reasons. People love comparing iPhone sales side by side with the combined sales of the dozens upon dozens of companies that sell android phones, with each company having multiple models and multiple versions, as if that comparison has any meaning. Its an idiotic comparison on so many levels. If you compare Apple as a phone manufacturer with any other phone manufacturer, they are still so far ahead of anyone else.

Same here. My OG Droid is on its last legs, and I've been holding out for the new iPhone. I don't even care about the redesign; I just wanted to see a 4" screen.

Nexus Prime it is.

It's funny to hear newbies to the Apple world act all shocked and keep saying Apple will surprise. Apple has almost never surprised for the past ten years. They always let us down. The focus is iOS 5 - the software. The emphasis has never been on hardware. iOS 5 and iCloud are too big to be overshadowed by a new hardware design. Apple expects iOS 5 and iCloud to sell the phone... not the hardware.

I think someone is going to look very smart on Tuesday.

There will be an iPhone 4S.

But that doesn't mean there won't be an iPhone 5.

Ok. Given these developments which now list both an iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s I have come to a conclusion.

There are two phones..

1) iPhone 4s -- A5, 5mp camera, 3.5" screen, updated antenna

2) iPhone 5 -- A5, 8mp camera, 4" screen, slightly tapered

Why give the 4 a minor spec bump? If the big feature is voice control, the A5 chip is needed.

You need to translate this, but this guy has been spot on for previous leaks.
He says the iPhone 5 has 4 inch screen, but had a production issue. Was supposed to come in September.
Also states that the iPhone 4s is ready to go, but the iPhone 5 has held it up.
Believe!!

How lame is it that they removed the iTunes beta with THREE days left until the formal release.

It's amazing that even with the evidence right under your noses some of you continue to believe that there will be a redesigned iPhone.

I, for one, am excited by the 4S. A5, 8MP camera, 1GB RAM (in a PHONE!), and the antenna issue negated, according to AnandTech, http://bit.ly/h1kWrf

So, what's not to love? The iPhone 4S sounds pretty damn incredible.

That's what I'm saying. Sure, something that *looks* new is often welcome, but aside from the antenna and the breakability of the glass (and maybe the slightly "antiquated" screen size) I see no problem with the iPhone 4 form factor. As a matter of fact, I'd be glad they're maintaining the look, for the most part. Some people say it's "too sharp" but you HAVE to be nitpicking at that point. The edges aren't rounded but they're not razor blade sharp by any stretch of the imagination, so I don't see why people choose that as a point to complain about. Put a case on it if it "hurts" so much.

if this thing doesn't get fully upgraded, then the iphone will be severely out-dated. its already out-dated now but it won't even come close to the phones that are out now and the ones that are coming out if it doesnt get updated.

Ugh... how many times do we have to go through this?

Step 1) Apple release new product.
Step 2) People realise it is not what they wanted.
Step 3) Everyone complains.
Step 4) Everyone suddenly loves it and all is forgiven.
Step 5) Return to Step 1

The 5 stages of Apple product grief? ;)

I actually LIKE the fact that the next iPhone WON'T have that much changed from the last iPhone (if the only one new iPhone rumor is true). Being on an iPhone 3G that won't be replaced for another couple of weeks (thanks to the new iPhone coming) is pure torture. I liked the form factor of the iPhone 4, and I liked that there was a SUBSTANCE to it, and not some thin p.o.s. that would break lest you looked at it funny.

Also, I still (STILL) am holding fast to the theory that the really thin new "iPhone 5" is actually the new iPod touch with 3G support. It actually holds, because the thinness is actually about as thin as the iPod touch models normally are.
