Because like I said, Apple likes everything all neat and tidy and

A5 chip, IOS 5, 5th gen phone and calling it the iphone 5 is all neat and tidy just how apple likes it.

As for the camera, I could see them upgrading that as well, there is no way there is not an iphone 5 after making everyone wait 16 months for a new phone.

Like I and others are saying, there will probably be a 4S that will be cheaper option and the 5 will be the real upgrade.

Dude if thats the case then the iPhone 3Gs was a gaggle F^%$k of mismatched numbers that didn't correspond. Apple must have just become a tidy little company recently I guess.

Apple is gaining the marketshare the counts. It's inevitable they lose marketshare to all the $0 or dirt cheap phones that now all have android installed, but this comparison is just nonsensical for so many reasons. People love comparing iPhone sales side by side with the combined sales of the dozens upon dozens of companies that sell android phones, with each company having multiple models and multiple versions, as if that comparison has any meaning. Its an idiotic comparison on so many levels. If you compare Apple as a phone manufacturer with any other phone manufacturer, they are still so far ahead of anyone else.

I agree but don't tell that to an android fan

Ok. Given these developments which now list both an iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s I have come to a conclusion.

There are two phones..

1) iPhone 4s -- A5, 5mp camera, 3.5" screen, updated antenna

2) iPhone 5 -- A5, 8mp camera, 4" screen, slightly tapered

Why give the 4 a minor spec bump? If the big feature is voice control, the A5 chip is needed.

You need to translate this, but this guy has been spot on for previous leaks.
He says the iPhone 5 has 4 inch screen, but had a production issue. Was supposed to come in September.
Also states that the iPhone 4s is ready to go, but the iPhone 5 has held it up.
Believe!!

Of all the rumors this seems to make most sense.

It's amazing that even with the evidence right under your noses some of you continue to believe that there will be a redesigned iPhone.

I, for one, am excited by the 4S. A5, 8MP camera, 1GB RAM (in a PHONE!), and the antenna issue negated, according to AnandTech, http://bit.ly/h1kWrf

So, what's not to love? The iPhone 4S sounds pretty damn incredible.

What evidence? Evidence of the exitence of a 4S ≠ the non-existence of an iPhone 5.

I personally hope for an iPhone 5 and still think we may have one....but I'm not really sure. Either way, all those that say Apple will "decline" if they only release a 4S are absolutely clueless. They'll probably be the first in line for a 4S.

if this thing doesn't get fully upgraded, then the iphone will be severely out-dated. its already out-dated now but it won't even come close to the phones that are out now and the ones that are coming out if it doesnt get updated.

In what sense? The rumors are that the internals are going to be updated, so how would the phone be out-dated by an internal update? Do you mean the look will be out-dated? Because it's still the best looking phone out there.

its amazing that people believe that evidence of a "not redesigned" phone exists... is evidence that there won't be a "redesigned phone"

Ummmmm, iPhone (1) to iPhone 3g to iPhone 3Gs to iPhone 4. Your theory is blown!

So, the iPhone 3Gs should have been called the iPhone 4 by your measure. It wasn't.

I don't understand your point. The 3GS was not the fourth iPhone. The iPhone 4 was the fourth iPhone, like the previous poster stated.

To me this is greater proof of an iPhone 5. If the 4S is a real product, it's probably going to be the cheaper iPhone we've been hearing about, but also tweaked, and duly named 4S to prevent people from thinking its still just the 4.

I just don't see Apple not releasing something called iPhone 5.

How lame is it that they removed the iTunes beta with THREE days left until the formal release.
It's about as lame as having no clue what a beta is and why beta's sometimes need to get pulled. But than again, the beta didn't get pulled so there's nothing lame.

Maybe it will be Tim Cooks first, "One more thing".

Why do so many people think there will only be an iPhone 4S and not a 5 as well? There were rumors for ages that there would be two new versions of the iPhone. One with a spec change, the 4S, and the redesigned version, the 5. I don't see why this would have changed.

Speaking of tim cook I still want to know does he have a high pitched voice or not?

If that is an iPhone 4S, which would come preloaded with iOS 5, wouldn't it have a different iOS homescreen with Newsstand? This looks like the current CDMA icon.

I really don't understand how calling this model the iPhone 4S instead of the iPhone 5 diminishes the significance of this upgrade.

The iPhone 4 outsells all other smartphones. The 3GS is in second place, at least for AT&T. Will slapping an "S" on the end of the name somehow cause people to quit buying it?

i hope this doesn't mean:

8gb iphone 4 = $99

iPhone 4s = $199

iPhone 5 = $299+?

i will be getting the 5, and paying full price for it! oh snap!

I think you may be on to something. With the onrush of all those android devices priced at $299, Apple may want a piece of that pie. I expect a $199 4s too with a under clocked a5 (800 mhz) and a larger 4in iPhone 5 at $299 and 1 ghz processor. Those android devices like the charge, thunderbolt, etc. weren't all that better than the ip4. If an amazing 4in. ip5 was released I would definitely buy it at $299!

Doesn't anybody see that the one of these phones has a seam on the side of the phone that the other doesn't??? Looks like a new antenna to me...

Or, it's the AT&T iPhone along with the Verizon iPhone.

Which is exactly what it is ... because the Verizon iPhone has no SIM slot and differently located "seams".

If Apple only releases an iPhone 4S (or whatever they call it, I'm using the '4S' moniker for a design that is similar to what the iPhone 4 is), which I'm fairly certain is the case, people will be in an uproar. My question to those who are going to be disappointed is this: would you feel that way if Apple released the device back in June?

As many people said, including myself, in January/early February of this year, Apple wouldn't release a new device just four months after millions were sold with the availability of the iPhone on Verizon. People ask "What could have Apple been doing/what problems did they encounter that it took them 16 months to release a 'new' phone with the same design?"

Fact is, this has always been the plan. Apple couldn't come out with a new, albeit similar, iPhone just four months after they sold 4.5 million on Verizon. Imagine the PR storm that would have been. Sure, people could have read the timeline of iPhone releases in the past, but I'm positive a large number of those who bought the phone on Verizon didn't care about that: to them, this iPhone was new on Verizon, thus a 'new' phone.

I'm inclined to believe that this upgrade to the iPhone (the 4S if you will) has been thought out and done for a while now. After all, it's not that hard to place a faster CPU, GPU, RAM and a higher mega-pixel camera onto some silicon and call it a day.

People who argue the case for a redesigned iPhone 5 (I'm going to completely ignore the entire fact that we have seen no physical evidence of it: no rear casing, no volume rockers, no screen, etc.) seem to forget this as well: Apple spent how much money and how much time developing the structure that is the iPhone 4. They also praised its antenna system. To change the design, in some ways, would lend credence to the fact that, in at least some form, Apple's engineers failed to understand the science behind the antenna system and in turn replaced it a year and a half later. Apple rarely admits failure. They did it with MobileMe, and they did it, partially, with the modified antenna on Verizon. While there are still some issues with signal degradation, the modified system on the CDMA iPhone is good enough for at least one more generation.

In short, there is no credible evidence that leads to an iPhone 5 being shown off. We have no pieces of the puzzle, other than case designs (that have been wrong before, and will continue to be wrong, as a lot of their designs stem from mock-ups and rumors) and some inventory screens. Do you really thing Radio Shack and Best Buy have information that others don't? Apple keeps everyone in the dark, except Apple. I'm positive only a handful of people outside of the company have placed their hands on the next-generation iPhone, in any form, let alone those who send out the notice to update inventory systems.

As much as the iPhone 4S may be considered a let down, the evidence for it is overwhelming.

Yes apparently ios users will be moving en masse to android now...completely logical conclusion based on the sales records set by the iphone the last four years...but yes, the nexus prime is the iphone killer...

Lets consider a following scenario:

Spring 2010 - iPhone 4 leaked by Gizmodo. Apple gets furious and plans an ultimate anti-leak plan.

2011 - lots of rumors about iPhone 4S - people "familiar with the subject" tell about better camera, a5 chip and... That's it.

01.10.2011 - Apple releases iTunes beta for a few hours to "leak" 4S data - to lower expectations.

04.10 - iPhone 4s does not exist. It was an elaborate plan created to turn public attention away from real information. iPhone 5 is introduced and all fanboys die from heart attack (too much happiness).

LOL @ all of you that are disappointed. It was obvious, at-least to me, that Apple wasn't going to release a "teardrop-shaped" iPhone 5.

Plus, the order for iPhones will most likely be like this from now on:
iPhone 2G>iPhone 3G>iPhone 3GS>iPhone 4G>*iPhone 4GS/iPhone 4S*>iPhone 5>iPhone 5GS/5S and so on.

And for those complaining "15 months of work and all we get is a lousy speedbump", you still don't understand how Apple works. They have a great phone and the design is still top notch. They're not going to mess with it now like other phone manufacturers that like to design new phones every 4 months to keep things fresh.

Don't forget, we have iOS5 and iCloud coming. iTunes Match doesn't look like it's a go yet from the betas, but I'm not sure now if Apple will release it anyway.

PS: iTunes beta 9 hasn't been pulled. The link changed according to those in the Apple Dev Forums.

I originally believed we would see an all new redesigned iPhone 5 alongside an iPhone 4S. The last few weeks however I've changed my mind. It's my belief they were planning on doing a "5" but something happened (no clue what) and now it's got pushed back, perhaps. The main focus in this event will be on iOS 5 and iCloud and then later on, Tim will unveil the 4S.
