There will be an iPhone 5 I am 100% certain of it.

There is no way after 16 months they would just release a specs update of an existing phone without anything else

I agree. Apple is totally ********** with us. The lost phone in the bar, the 4s cases, the 4s on iTunes. There's gonna be a redesign. For sure.

Well thats not good...

Actually it is good. People are being weird.

The iPhone 4 is still the best smartphone in the world, and has been since its release. Improving that is a good thing.

Thumbs up to making the best smartphone better. It did not need a major overhaul or design change.

I can't believe some people are still saying how ridiculous it would be for Apple to release a spec bumped iPhone 4. Do they continue to forget about the iPhone 3GS? It's exactly the same thing.

And guess what? It still sold like crazy. So will the 4S.

Also, this doesn't make it 100% certain that they won't also introduce an iPhone 5. Perhaps they removed reference to the 5, then released the beta and then realized they forgot to also remove reference to the 4S. That's what I immediately thought when they removed the beta. Like, "Oops, we forgot to remove that too."

We'll all find out on Tuesday.

Apple has gone to great lengths to hide the existence of an iPhone 5.

For real, you are dumb if you don't think there will be an iPhone 5 unveiled on Tuesday.

I can't wait for you to be proved wrong.

Lets consider a following scenario:

Spring 2010 - iPhone 4 leaked by Gizmodo. Apple gets furious and plans an ultimate anti-leak plan.

2011 - lots of rumors about iPhone 4S - people "familiar with the subject" tell about better camera, a5 chip and... That's it.

01.10.2011 - Apple releases iTunes beta for a few hours to "leak" 4S data - to lower expectations.

04.10 - iPhone 4s does not exist. It was an elaborate plan created to turn public attention away from real information. iPhone 5 is introduced and all fanboys die from heart attack (too much happiness).

Very close, but no cigar.

Mr. Apple-is-dead Troll,

Please jump to Windows/Linux and Android/WP7/[insert other dead mobile OS] and quit your bitching.

Do fools like you really believe when someone has a negative opinion about Apple, they are trolling? Do you think they are so perfect they cannot reverse course again and head towards bankruptcy in a few years? Without Steve Jobs? Get real you doughnut.

I've loved being part of Apple's rise but I genuinely fear the end is nigh for them, especially without iPhone 5 this month.

lol the chances of seeing a iPhone 5 are about the same as seeing a ipad 3 this year. Slim to none.

How is the A5 processor,HSPA+, 8MP camera, outdated? The A5 beats most processors on the market right now, regardless of Ghz.

i don't think you understand what im saying. im talking about the features that have been rumored for the iPhone 4S NOT the iPhone 5. furthermore, HSPA+ is outdated when theres 4G out there. and im not saying it needs to be 4G, im just trying to prove my point.

Apple's gotta be toying with us. This industry moves way too fast for Apple not to upgrade their phone substantially over a year and a half. After the 4 got leaked early last year, apple probably cracked down even further on keeping the 5 a secret this year.

No matter what it's called, 4S or the 5, it's still the 5th generation phone. But I have a feeling apple has something in the works that none of us know about.

Yeah it moves so fast that 18 months later the iPhone 4 is hands down still the best phone to buy on the market.

By the way don't bother quoting me hardware specs or phones with 5" screens. End to end experience and usability, no phone is as good as the iPhone 4 right now, period. So if in 18 months nobody could catch them, why should Apple be blowing their load.

Apple's 2010 release cycle was focused on hardware first and software second. If you look at the difference between iOS 3 and iOS 4, Apple didn't add many groundbreaking features - Multitasking, AirPrint, AirPlay, GameCenter, Find my iPhone.

So, the focus was to make the iPhone 4 a total redesign and give it a substantial spec update. iPhone 4 is a massive hit, Apple sells millions and breaks records.

Fast forward to 2011. WWDC 2011 provided a clear insight into Apple's strategy for the 2011 release cycle. The focus was on software first and hardware second. So, you have iOS 5 with more than 200 features, iCloud and iTunes Match.

What did Apple do for the last 16 months? It has released the Verizon iPhone, iPad 2 and OSX Lion. And it has been working furiously to ship the new software. The hardware is only secondary. And what about Assistant - it was not even mentioned when iOS 5 was introduced, proving that this release cycle is more about software than hardware.

For all those talking about a low price iPhone 4S, put yourself in Apple's shoes. Why would you want to put an A5 processor in your best selling phone and sell it at a lower margin? Would you not rather sell your best selling phone (iPhone 4) as is, at a lower price point by lowering the storage? And when your focus this release cycle is software first, is it not easy to improve your best selling iPhone with better specs and call it the iPhone 4S.

All the case manufactures and carriers are guessing like us. Apple reveals to none. Everyone wants a new redesign and everyone wants the iPhone 5 (including me). By including this subtle hint, Apple is clearly setting expectations.

People who are still persistent and full of hope that there will be a redesigned iPhone 5 are under the sheer delusion of geekness. You have to look at things through a businessman's, a marketer's point of view. After all, that is what Apple is. Not a geek boy, a world-wide company. You don't make more money than the Federal Bank without wondrous marketing plans, business tactics. Let me try to explain(like many other tried) why there won't be a redesigned iPhone 5.

1) Main thing about this Tuesday's event is iOS 5 and iCloud, more software than hardware i mean.
2) Apple worked so much on iPhone 4's current design. They state that antenna on the outside is a great innovation and won't be changing that. Plus, they just released CDMA iPhone 4 four months ago and it sold like crazy. Hell it's still selling. From Apple's point of view, iPhone 4 design is a cow still with a lot of milk to milk.
3) You have to think futuristic on these things. Think for a moment what can be new on the iPhone that will come out after this Tuesdays'. First thing that comes to mind is LTE capability isn't it? So i'm positive that there will be a LTE iPhone in 2012, of course there will be at least an announcement of an iOS 6 in 2012 too. So LTE capability is a huge thing and needs a new design. If they redesign the iPhone now, they will need another design next year, not a sane thing to do.

I think there won't be an iPhone 5 re-design this Tuesday mainly because Apple thinks that the iPhone 4 design can go on for at least 8-10 months. Come June, announce new iPhone and things get back in schedule(regular June, iPhone month schedule)

And unfortunately i am saying these still owning a iPhone 3G from the October of 2008, now without the lock button and extra slowness. I too would want an iPhone redesign especially after waiting this 4-5 months for a new phone but my logic is stating otherwise.

Did they take beta 9 down and put it back up again? Thank god they fixed the music playback issue in this release, i was beginning to think my music was corrupt or something.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you've just said. Logic would say you should be correct but who knows. Maybe Apple does have a trick up their sleeve.

Unfortunately, you're probably right.

I will be disappointed if it's only a spec bump with no screen enlargement, but such is life. I probably will just skip it, though I badly need to upgrade my 3G.

It'd be interesting though if Apple didn't make it thinner, as every report I can recall explicitly mentioned this. I know that it'd be obvious, but the WSJ mentioned it in articles that seemed to be well-sourced, I thought.

That is the past growth.

Now let's talk about the future. If i4s is a minor bump, they will lose share to s2 and s3. Back then, there was no android phone that was comparable to the iphone. In the past competition was not as fierce as it is now.

LOL. Android Trolls in full force. iPhone 4/iPhone 4S isn't about ****ing specs. It's all about the OS and how it's an awesome experience compared to other operating systems. As long as Apple provides that, expect shares to keep rising up to the $500/share by end of 2012.

The Galaxy S II, S III, S IV or V will not be able to compete. People want the iPhone experience because it "just works". Android, no matter how hard Google tries, will never be able to deploy an iPhone-like experience. Why? Because it's all about the ****ing specs with them. No one cares if you have a 15MP camera if the pictures come out crappy. No one cares if you have dual-core or quad-core if you still lag when you scroll through your apps folder or in the browser.

Then surely the event would be let's talk ios5 if it was all about the software.

One fact you can be sure of is unless Apple make one model for America, and a different model for the rest of the World, it will NOT have 4G. Only America has currently invested in it (who'd have thought it?) so it makes no sense for Apple to include it.

This is so disappointing...

If the iPhone 4S is the only new iPhone, then i guess October 4th will be a very sad day.
I guess you can thank the millions of people who blindly buy the iPhone regardless of it's issues. But you can thank Apple for creating such a following.. they don't need to innovate, they don't need to compete, they can produce a crappy flip-phone, as long as it has the Apple logo it'll sell like crazy.

If we're only getting an iPhone 4S after over a year, then this is pathetic.

No other phone out there is selling close to the numbers that the iPhone 4 is selling at... Not even a noticeable fraction, so when people make comments like this I don't get it. It is not like there is some other phone out there tearing up the market place. There is a mish mash of Android noise that is not a relevant competitor in total.

The iPhone 4 continues to be the best smartphone available when you take everything into consideration. Even if all they do is improve it, they will continue to sell tons of them. Once people grow up they don't tend to need to have their "toys" reinvented every year just so they can stay focused on them. I suggest for people who have trouble focusing on an improved device that was already amazing, that you look into ADHD medications.
