People who are still persistent and full of hope that there will be a redesigned iPhone 5 are under the sheer delusion of geekness. You have to look at things through a businessman's, a marketer's point of view. After all, that is what Apple is. Not a geek boy, a world-wide company. You don't make more money than the Federal Bank without wondrous marketing plans, business tactics. Let me try to explain(like many other tried) why there won't be a redesigned iPhone 5.

1) Main thing about this Tuesday's event is iOS 5 and iCloud, more software than hardware i mean.
2) Apple worked so much on iPhone 4's current design. They state that antenna on the outside is a great innovation and won't be changing that. Plus, they just released CDMA iPhone 4 four months ago and it sold like crazy. Hell it's still selling. From Apple's point of view, iPhone 4 design is a cow still with a lot of milk to milk.
3) You have to think futuristic on these things. Think for a moment what can be new on the iPhone that will come out after this Tuesdays'. First thing that comes to mind is LTE capability isn't it? So i'm positive that there will be a LTE iPhone in 2012, of course there will be at least an announcement of an iOS 6 in 2012 too. So LTE capability is a huge thing and needs a new design. If they redesign the iPhone now, they will need another design next year, not a sane thing to do.

I think there won't be an iPhone 5 re-design this Tuesday mainly because Apple thinks that the iPhone 4 design can go on for at least 8-10 months. Come June, announce new iPhone and things get back in schedule(regular June, iPhone month schedule)

And unfortunately i am saying these still owning a iPhone 3G from the October of 2008, now without the lock button and extra slowness. I too would want an iPhone redesign especially after waiting this 4-5 months for a new phone but my logic is stating otherwise.

This will be long, but I advise everyone to read because it contains more substance than most of the posts here.

You can't tell everyone to 'think from a businessman's, a marketer's point of view' and give supporting statements in the definitive when the statements are weak, biased, and mindless 'points'

1. It's about the hardware. How does one claim it's about the software when it says 'Let's talk iPhone' on the official invitation
2. OK, the Verizon iPhone is still selling, and I'm not surprised given that it is an iPhone and that it was released just seven months ago. It is NOT selling even close to the rate that it was during the first few months that it came out. The rate diminishes immensely as you go through time (one of your businessman's point of views). The 'milk to milk' becomes milk drops the more time goes by when compared to something brand new.

From your marketer's point of view, the design is one of the top, if not the top reasons a customer makes his purchase. It has immediate appeal to the senses, and it is the one thing that a standard customer takes away with the most after looking at it online or playing with it in the store for a few minutes. Why do you think they immediately made the iPad 2 thinner and lighter. Couldn't they have made just an iPad 1.5 with the other new features -oh, which by the way, mimic the supposed 4S features to the dot - and 'milked the milk' out of that, all while waiting for the iPad 3 to bust out the thinner and lighter design?

They are expecting to sell 30 million of these phones IN ONE QUARTER, which is around 9 million MORE than the record setting quarter in 2010. This cannot be accomplished when just a 4 and a 4S are both sitting on the shelf. Customers have to dig to get a grasp on the new features, and even then they are not significant.

3. LTE needs a new design? You don't even know the 5's design, you don't understand Apple's design team, and you probably don't know what an LTE chip looks like (I don't know either, which is why you don't see me posting about what Apple is going to do with LTE).

Finally, notice how 9to5mac now says it has been independently expecting a 4S, while a week ago they said their sources have used the 5 and told them it is a device to behold. And later on, oh by the way there are 'production problems' all of a sudden, and we somehow find this out towards the end of the month, so even though we just said we fully expect a 5, now we are just going to change our minds. Think about the fact that production has been going on now for at least a month. They would have found out about 'production problems' earlier

Notice how Apple Insider is reporting the story about the 4S in iTunes beta. Their supporting evidence is that Ming Kuo guy's report. They don't mention anything about the other reports supporting the 5, and they don't even mention the POSSIBILITY of Apple just using this as a placeholder and leaking it to curb expectations.

Thisismynext first reported about the teardrop, and they haven't reneged on that. Reports about two phones originated in the beginning of the year. Throughout the whole year, rumors about two phones have been persistent.

This is all a coordinated effort. You don't project to sell 30 million (and keep in mind Apple always projects low) after deciding to bill your new phone as a 4S and leaking that information all away. You project to sell 30 million after making a fully new iPhone 5 and by making sure that it doesn't get leaked, thus creating much, much, much more hype. At that point, you don't even have to rely on Apples' marketers' points of view.

Lots of wrong business knowledge there

this is in response to your last post:

Ok so I guess I'll have to repeat myself - N94 is NOT the 4S.

Let me clarify:

N88 - 3GS
N90 - 4
N92 - 4 CDMA
N94 - 5
N99 - 4S

So lets quit the guessing game BS.

I can't wait for my new, shiney, iphone 5 !!!! :D
I will be able to tell it to get me a gallon of milk, and it will hire someone to go to the store for me and get it.

When will they start taking pre-orders, I have a CC in hand! :D

gotta throw a few things out there:

1. having a product cycle reset in october is much better than june to capitalize on holiday sales

2. the leap from 3g to 3gs was another time. The smartphone game moves much faster nowadays. Gotta have a new model every year with a redesign at this point to entice the 1 year crowd and to keep the 2 year crowd around.

3. i dont understand why some people think apple invested more R&D into iP4 than the other models

4. larger screen is needed at this point and I also think apple doesnt want another iP3G issue with it basically being a paperweight when running iOS4

5. iOS 5, iPhone 5, A5 chip, stock to 500+

6. would make sense to bring the iPhone design in line with iPad 2 design

Yet the top two selling smartphones came out 30 and 18 months ago.

So android phones must suck. Probably 200 android devices have come out in the last 30 months and none of them can outsell the 3GS even?

Wrong. No single android phone is outselling iPhone. Android smartphones overall are selling way more than iPhone.

So how does that make what I said wrong. It doesn't.

Then explain why the keynote invite says "Let's talk iPhone"?
It should and it would do Apple good to be humbled a bit, but it won't.
Good point. They'll both look like a year and a half old device.
I was just writing this myself. Besides, why would the keynote invite say "Let's talk iPhone" when there really nothing to talk about? They can't have a whole iPhone event if it's just an iPhone 4s.
You guys can't think past the end of your noses. "don't fix what ain't broke" is only thinking about now. What happens in 6 or 8 months when the current design is pushing 2 years!? That's when people stop buying it and realize it's just too far behind the times. 'course maybe this is what Apple wants: to milk it for everything it's worth and walk all over its loyal customers by sitting on past successes.
Personally, if apple sticks with it's 3.5" kid's phone, I'll take the next year to enjoy other, more modern phones until we see what iPhone 6 brings.

It says lets talk iphone because iOS5 will likely have voice integration on the iphone. "Talk, iphone"

They can have a whole iphone event for iOS5 and iphone 4s/5 (not redesigned)

...and I believe the current designs for macbook pros, airs, and MacPro are all pushing at least two years. Except for a port or two. And they seem to be selling fine.

I will say what I have said before:

Apple has never radically redesigned the iPhone every year. The iPhone 4 is a fantastic design and there is absolutely no reason for you all to feel that you're owed a new design.

Don't fix what isn't broken.

That is ridiculous.

Year 1: Original iPhone (obviously brand new)
Year 2: Redesign
Year 3: Speed bump
Year 4: Redesign

Right, Apple has *never* 'redesigned' the iPhone "every year." Out of three years following the original, 2 have been redesigns.

Who knows if they'll redesign this year, but to act like you have data that shows they won't based upon history is ignorant.

iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 Proof - Telstra Australia

Hi all

I have managed to obtain visual proof that the two iPhone will be released - the 4S and the iPhone 5 as indicated in Telstra PDF's for advertising. All of these ads also mention 4G with the iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 as well. These will be released on the Telstra network - iPhone 5 - November 28. NOTE: One of the ads mentions Steve Jobs, so this will need to be changed to Tim Cook, but other than these this is proof of two iPhones being released and the release date in Australia.

NOTE: A3 in the PDF's indicates the print size for the Ads - nothing else.

Enjoy.

Ok,

So not sure if this changes the significance, but I'm sure it will prompt more discussion.

"iPhone 4S" first appeared in iTunes Beta 6.1 which was released on August 29th, 2011. It's been there all that time, and didn't just show up in Beta 9.

That has always been based on speculation.

Apples history tells us it is unlikely apple would introduce two new products at the same time that were so similar.

Apple's history has no value about this topic, because this is the first time the iPhone release date has been shifted.

I was talking about the company as a whole and we don't know the iPhone release date was shifted. That is more unsupported speculation

I think many of the pundits are wrong.

The 4S takes the place of the iPhone 4 with dual-mode radio and faster processor (the S is for speed, right?). The iPhone4 becomes the cheap iPhone everyone is expecting. And yes, there will still be an iPhone 5 with the better camera, more memory, and maybe other hardware features that will top the iPhone 4S.

This. iPhone 4s has A5 to run Apple's new voice control system.

These are great but unfortunately do not prove anything. Companies have a tendency to prepare material for possible product releases that are unconfirmed prior to an announcement. This way they can be ready for just the 4S release, or Just the 5 release, or both!

Arn, just throwing this out there...

Is there any way we can get an official poll on what is going to happen at Mac events, for example, all the different combinations of iphone 5 and 4s with and without redesign? It would be even cooler if members could have a record of their "% correct"

I think we should just wait till Tuesday lol. This is getting so out of hand, and yet I can't keep from checking the blogs all weekend :(

Agreed, but better than no info - and the first I have seen officially branded mentioning both phones with the brand new Telstra colour scheme and 4G so these are definitely only new ads which have been prepped. Im sure Telstra would not put out expensive ads based on rumours. Obviously a 4S and 5 will be released.

I dont believe it, it would make ZERO sense to call the new iphone the 4S esp since Apple has delayed the phone this long. Not to mention it being the 5th Gen phone, using the A5 chip and it being IOS5 would be too perfect. 555 it would be stupid to call it the iphone 4S esp when Apple got back to the correct Gen number. If they called this the iphone 4s that means the next phone would be the iphone 6 and it would confuse everyone looking for the 5

The only way an iphone is called the iphone 4s would be if is the rumored cheaper iphone and they come out with two phones. A cheaper iphone 4s and the redesigned normal price iphone

5th Gen, A5 chip, IOS 5 = iphone 5 has a nice ring to it
5th Gen, A5 chip, IOS 5 = iphone 4S would make no sense and it would not have a nice ring to it

You could see on the big screen as way.

A5 CHIP...........IOS 5..............5th Gen.......... iPHONE 5

Apple never markets the specs. I haven't seen the first commercial were they mention the generation of the iPhone or the processor in it, what processor is on the original or 3G or 3GS? Consumers don't care, they only hear faster that previous model, or how magical is the experience that will change their lives forever and all that, they will hear the new features of the software and say "I need that" even if they don't.

I said it before and I'll say it again: according to the whole theory of 5th gen + A5 + iOS 5 apple can call it the iPhone 15 if they want 5+5+5=15 it doesnt matter, Apple will release what ever they want, and call it whatever they want and it can look the same as last model, not that the 3 first looked that different from each other, it will still sell a lot, people will buy it even the many that say that they will leave and get a galaxy IIs.

Look at the the launch of Lion, "we have all this new features, this is the future, bla bla bla, it's all about the software and the cloud and bla la la" Ahh and we put a thunderbolt connector on the new Mac Book Pros but there's nothing to connect to it right now and we threw in there some intel i5's and i7's.

Sales figures dont matter for this discussion.

All that matters is the answer to THIS question:

WHY WOULD APPLE CALL IT THE IPHONE 4S WHEN THEY CAN CALL IT THE IPHONE 5?

As businessmen why would they call it the "iPhone minor upgrade" when they don't have to?

It seems so obvious but clearly a lot of people don't get it. Apple's naming convention is generational. And now the previous generation will get slightly modified, have an "S" thrown on the end of it, and be marketed as the cheap phone.

The 3G was an exception because iPhone 3G sounded better than iPhone 2 as 3G was the main selling point of the phone.

They could easily have prepared both ads, and will release only the ones that apply. That's very common for ad agencies to do.
