So you tap in with your watch and tap out and it calculates your journey and charges your card? You don't need an app open?

I taped out with my phone, just to test that, and then my phone would not work in Birleys, so I am not sure whether I made a mistake. Time will tell.

I needed to open the app on my phone and also on my watch but doing so on the watch is easy as it is a double click on the contacts button and your default card opens and is ready to be tapped. If you are not carrying anything it's the easiest thing in the world. If you are carrying something it's a bit tricky and taking a credit card out of your top pocket might actually be easier as you can do with one hand. If it goes wrong on the underground and its rush hour you are also going to look a right idiot.

is there anyway to name the cards in passbook?

got 2 RBS cards registered and show the same card graphic ,so I need to remember what account its for via the last 4 digits of the card.

would be good if you could add a nickname to it...

Does it matter whether a retailer takes Amex or not?

If Apple Pay are processing the transaction and the retailer gets the payment info from them then do they even know what card is behind the transaction?

Yes the retailer needs to take AMEX because AMEX are involved. Essentially it currently works the same as it does now, when you pay for something your card details are sent to the merchants payment gateway, the payment gateway contacts the scheme (AMEX) to find out who the issued the card (YOUR BANK/AMEX as they are also an issuer) and then the payment gateway completes the transaction with the issuer, the fact it's a tokenised card is irrelevant, basically noting touches Apples system during the payment and the system works as it always has done.

Just spoke to natwest they said my card is non contactless so they've ordered me a new one!

You misunderstand. The current NFC limit is £20. In September the limit will be £30.

With Apple Pay it will be unlimited (due to the higher security since its not just contactless with no authentication, but the terminal in the store needs an update to be able to do this. Until the update is done, those terminals will only accept up to the base limit (£20 no, £30 in September) for any NFC transaction.

If the limitation is the base terminal, how can apple pay be unlimited? Do you have a source that it will go over £30?

I wonder how long before staff refuse to accept that payment can be made by a watch? Including managers who aren't trained. I'm assuming the till would give the same authorisation as it would if people were using contactless cards.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happens to a few people over the next few weeks, staff who will think we are trying to scam them and call their managers! Resulting in a tedious wait whilst the other pricks in the queue give you a funny look for moving forward with the times!

Anyone Travelled on the tube or the bus yet using this? I wonder what those ticket inspectors will be thinking when we flash out our phones for them.

I *think* the over £30 limit is removed if you're buying from one of the official AP partners-Waitrose, Apple Stores etc.

I may be wrong about that, so don't take it as gospel! :D

gotta laugh if the buying experience goes a little like ...

how many times will you need to use apple pay to buy stuff?

Will the UK really **** this up and set a new world standard of incompetentemce by ruining a truly great payment experience?

is this how an apple pay shopping experience will go?

Goods are £200 sir

Please hold Touch ID, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, eh and again sir, again, one more time, no sorry again, yes another...thank you sir here is your shopping have a nice day.

I believe you can only do one transaction with a max of £30.

What is more interesting is that they believe that someone who has an iPhone, and Apple watch etc and goes shopping for groceries, thier basket comes under £30.

I must say I'm disappointed that First Direct are not now a launch day partner, but I take solace in the fact that this decision (cock up) will have been driven by some numpty at HSBC (who FD are a part of).

I'm happy to wait for FD to launch AP and have added my Amex card in the interim (I pretty much use it as a debit card anyway, as it give me a nice lump of cutback once a year).

That would be interesting. Will have to have a look into it

A total PR disaster for HSBC and First Direct.

Why on earth did they allow their name to be associated with the first wave? They allowed expectations to climb, knowing full well they would not meet them. This was completely unavoidable and whatever the real reasons are, it's made them look detached from their customers and incompetent.

They chose to bury the release details in a press release, why didn't they just have a banner on the front of their web page for the last few months. If they really never had any intention of releasing today, then someone in corporate PR should be looking for a new job. This is exactly the sort of unnecessary brand harm they are paid to prevent.
