Actually, the banking system was well ahead of the world on this. We were the first country to roll out PayPass and PayWave en masse 14 years ago and before chip and PIN became the norm. Then the tin foil hats came out; people were going to steal your card number from the other side of restaurants while it was still in your pocket, they beat up the banks to remove them from Debit and Credit cards, places like McDonald’s removed the tap terminals... and now here we are, bringing it back because it’s better... like we tried telling those loudmouth idiots to begin with.
McDonald’s never removed them. I used my PayPass card up until Apple Pay was introduced, and then continued using it until they got chip readers, and still using it now.

But now what we are seeing is more paypass terminals (which is all it is!) en masse thanks to Apple. Which I’m ok with!

I swear I’ve heard this song before.

Either way, you answer your own question. The merchants who were not allowing Apple Pay did not allow contactless payments at all. They wanted to do everything via QR code.

Wrong. They want to use NFC but apple doesn't let devs use the NFC in the iPhone.

I was recently visiting Italy and was using Apple Pay linked to my us card on my watch everywhere, no matter how small the village or store - of course I became everywhere the local sensation sine nobody knew that this can be done from a watch ...

I still get comments when I pay from my watch or board a plane from my watch. This stuff has been around for years, seems it shouldn't still be novel but it is. And I live in major urban centers too, it's not like gadgets are rare in these areas.

Back when ApplePay launched it worked at Home Depot, then they disabled it. At least at my store.

Yep, it worked at every Home Depot for a time. Then they turned it off so they could "work on making sure it worked." They promised in a press release to re-activate it soon, and that was a few years ago now.

Thanks for that link. Very interesting. Not sure I entirely trust that data, though. Simply cannot believe one of the statistics given:
"...24.8% OF USERS WITH IOS OR ANDROID PHONES HAVE SET UP WALMART PAY AND USED IT AT LEAST ONCE IN THE PAST..."
Since neither nobody in my immediate family, including parents, has Walmart Pay, I asked a couple colleagues in the hall - neither have they. Granted, they're professionals, so less likely to frequent Walmart, but still...0 for 8. Hard to believe that 1/4 of all smartphone users have Walmart Pay installed and tried it once.

They force you to use it for the Grocery App (the drive-up pickup) and for the Savings Catcher... so people that use either of those are using it, they likely just don’t know they do.

Simple. They finally enable Contactless. A godsend because Target has the slowest chip readers in the world. And too many questions on the chip readers.
So the US didn’t have contactless? It’s been standard for 15 years. I don’t even remember the last time I used a chip or a PIN...

No, it’s not more complex. It’s literally as simple as enabling NFC payments on your terminal. Enable NFC and Apple Pay starts working. Anything else you want to do like have an Apple logo, etc. is optional.
So you work in the ApplePay division of Apple?

You are totally wrong. What part of the other items I listed didn't make sense? Apple is NOT going to allow their product to be available without the proper marketing materials, contract terms, training, software, etc being done beforehand.

Business is not done this way, no matter how "simple" it is to just "turn on."

Love Target.
5% off with RED card plus free delivery, and tax-free.
What is not to like? (With or Without Apple Pay)

People go on and on about that stupid target red card and the 5%. Big friggen Whoopee. Of this was Apple giving off 5% of something there would be outrage on here.

The free shipping is a bigger deal.

I have Apple Pay, a Target Red Card, and Walmart Pay. I use Apple Pay everywhere I can. I infrequently go to Walmart, but use Walmart Pay when I go as it is tied to my existing credit card and I get my miles.

I never ever use the Target Red Card, as you can’t tie it to a non-Target credit card account. Only to a checking account and to their branded credit card (which I don’t want).

I try to avoid using a debit card or anything linked to my checking for most of my purchases, as when you do you have none of the consumer protections you get with credit cards. I’d rather just pay it all off at the end of the credit card billing cycle.

I do hope that Target ties the Red Card to Apple Pay. I’m betting they don’t.

Ha ha ha. You're kidding right? The public doesn't give two whits about data breaches. Heck we're here talking about a company, Target, that had a huge data breach and didn't really miss a beat. You have a thread full of people who still used Target, even with no Apple Pay. They're just happier it's available now.

You're comparing apples to oranges here. I never said that if Walmart Pay got hacked, then people would stop going to Walmart. I was saying that if Walmart Pay got hacked, then people would stop using Walmart Pay AT Walmart and just pay with their cards the normal way.

Home Depot is another holdout, and they have no good reason for it. Their PoS terminals supported it back when Apple Pay first came out, then they disabled NFC everywhere and still haven't re-enabled it.
I think it's a data grab with Home Depot. I can't pay at the terminals there without the machine practically begging that they email me a receipt...

We do, in fact US cards had Contactless since the 99s etc Bedfore Chip & PIN was even a thing. (Wells Fargo & Visa called it PayWave, Chase called it Blink, WaMu had PayPass, etc)

just not at these stores who would literally want to track you. The chip contains your name, card number, expiry date etc that the store can use to harvest information. Generally not available with Contactless. Because of this Target & Walmart chose not to enable Contactless at all, at least until now. Walmart’s UK division, ASDA, enabled Contactless. Target didn’t bother with Contactless when it tinkered with Canada, a major Contactless market. But thankfully all of this is changing.

There’s a story online on how target used this harvested information to figure out a lady was pregnant based on what she has purchased and sent her coupons for things related to pregnancy.

Are you saying that where you live, there is no upper limit on contactless payment purchases?

Swiping a card at the point of sale. Whatever risk is associated with that.
What risk to the card holder? That's what I am asking.

Amazing, I was just discussing this with a Target cashier last night, that they are the main reason I even have to carry a wallet when I go shopping.

The strangest thing I've noticed using Apple Pay is that at the Apple Store they can't automatically retrieve your email address to send you a receipt when you use it (normally they tie this to a CC number, so you don't have to have them re-enter the address if you pay with a physical card). I thought built in consumer loyalty cards was advertised as one of the features of Apple Wallet years ago.

This is pretty common knowledge that enabling NFC is all that is required. Apple Pay operates using the same EMV contactless technology that Google Pay, as well as all contactless payment cards, use. If you turn on NFC, it enables the POS to accept Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and contactless payment cards unless your payment processor has disabled it for some reason.

This info is on Apple’s own website for crying out loud:

Target was the reason I looked into Apple Pay. Their database was hacked several years ago and my credit card was one of the numbers that were taken. Got a new card, a year goes by, we go back to Target....and their database gets hacked and our card number is again in the range of numbers stolen. Although neither time did I have any actual fraudulent charges show up both times I had to get a new card and change credit card default numbers for a couple of autopays my wife set up. Had I been able to use Apple Pay all the hackers would have gotten from me is a one time number that didn’t directly tie to my card or bank and that number would be useless for making a purchase.

I complained to Target but they said that they planned on releasing their own secure credit card and did I want to get a Target card? I asked if some group had already hacked their system twice why should I get a credit card that could be used if they get hacked again.

They claim it was for security but they easily had the slowest of all chip readers of any retailer I've ever been to. Hated every minute of it. Didn't help our local target only staffed 1-2 of the 20? checkout lanes and waited till lines got to the isles to do anything about it - meanwhile begging people to use the automated checkouts.
