It's not about speed, people. For those of us who don't like to carry a lot of cash, it's about security. As a victim of identity theft (twice) I'm more than excited to have :apple:Pay.

So true.

This should be renamed the MacWhiners thread. Golly, gee whiz folks, nobody is forcing you to use it. Let it be.

P.S. My wife had her credit card information stolen twice and a duplicate card was made and used in England. She was not there. It happened by the same bank.

i love how everyone does the marketing for apple. :p

but very awkward, almost made ME blush.

Not if the server hadn't forgot to press a button. Once she pressed the button it was instant.

It works just like NFC payments in Europe, and they're a lot quicker than messing around with cash.

I use NFC on my AmEx as and when I can here in the UK.

Definitely a lot easier than waiting to enter a PIN etc... roll on 2015 so we can start using it as well!

why did he have the screen on all the time? I thought the idea was iPhone would light on its own once its time to touch ID and confirm. Not the best example. Girl has a pretty face though :)

Just used it at Walgreens. It was easy and more convenient than signing or typing in a PIN.

you're doing it wrong

This is not a good demo - it makes it look much harder and less convenient than it actually is. You don't need to open passbook, you don't need to open the card you plan to use. Heck, you don't even need to wake up the phone. You simply hold the phone to the scanner, and it will then prompt you which card to use and ask you to touch the Touch ID. If you want to use your default card, you place your thumb on the home button and THEN hold it up to the scanner. This guy is doing a disservice by falsely informing users of the best way to use the device.

I went to McDonalds today too 20 minutes after the update was released, and it worked like a charm. Strangely, not even the store manager was aware of Apple Pay, and even told me that they did not accept it! I had to convince them to let me try! The first time it failed, after a long delay, I got a null ($0) transaction, as if it worked on the phone but never generated a receipt. 2nd and 3rd times worked perfectly. I made sure I wasn't billed for the first transaction even though it shows up within PassBook.

Doesn't seem to be live in the UK?

It's US only, for now.

We should be getting it next year when Apple and the various banks and retailers get the equipment and systems in place.

If you change the language to English and your region to United States the set up option appears in Passbook but when you add a credit card it says it isn't supported yet.

Why is the purchase of pink slime from questionable parts of tortured and murdered animals with an iPhone considered a bellwether of technological/commercial progress?

It's US-only for now. NFC payment systems aren't as common, but with the recent security breaches the retailers are finally beginning to roll out EMV readers, most of which will also accept contactless payments.

Do you guys not have tap-to-pay over there? I have my iphone in a wallet case, and credit card in the slot of the wallet. To pay for a McDonald's, or groceries or whatever, I just take my wallet out of my pocket, touch the corner of it on the machine, and put it back in my pocket. Total two seconds. This looked like a complete farce.

In the US do you still have to put your card in the machine and type a PIN?

As I understand, they haven't even gotten as far as PIN yet. The have to hand their card to the cashier, have it swiped and then put down their signature, like we used to do 20 years ago.

Yes, Macrumours attracts a lot of poster who HATE everything and get so mad they're ready to punch a hole through the wall because Apple charges too much for memory, etc. It might be healthy that they're venting their spleen via Macrumours rather than keeping their rage bottled up though I guess.

It works at Whole Foods, too.

cash would've been faster....

not always.
If the total was $4.80
You handed over $5.05 they cashier would probably say it was only $4.80, you only needed to give them a $5.
to which you'd say, no, take the $5.05
the stare, the shoulder shrug and finally, Oh, here's your change you get a quarter!

I will say this was a very awkward experience. it doesn't need to be this way.

NFC is EVERYWHERE in London! Have been using the Barclays Payband for months now...
