What is really weird is that I've never seen so many advertisements for PayPal in my life. I'm not even sure if I've ever seen on on TV until recently, and now I keep seeing them all the time since Apple Pay was announced! They're in damage control mode now. They screwed up bad. Which platform do you honestly think mobile payments are going to take off on—Apple or Samsung? Yeah, that's what I thought.

It's also weird to consider who Apple is competitors with now. Never would have guessed PayPal just a few years ago. Can't wait for the PayPal fanboys to come out on the attack now. HAH.

Apple acting like a jilted three year old again, get over yourself Apple and play nice! Consumer first, not Apple first!

Apple sounds like a company whose prospective parter was negotiating in bad faith, insofar as that party's parent company was concerned. Having done so, why should eBay now get a seat at the table?

But with one big difference: almost everyone with an iPhone is already going to have an account (iTunes/iCloud) with a credit card attached. And it is already on their phone, ready to use. But not everyone will have a PayPal account, that's another account with another company they need to set up and maintain and for a lot of people, that's a barrier.

Exactly - just add your Paypal Debit/Credit card to Apple Pay and you'll be fine. No muss, no fuss.

Except in my case where the debit card attached to my iTunes account is a Paypal Business Debit Mastercard; issued by one of the largest banks in the world, The Bancorp, which is NOT listed as a bank that will be a part of :apple:Pay, neither now or coming soon. The only other bank account I have is the new Simple.com bank whose Visa debit card is issued by... Bancorp. :(

So I guess I won't be able to use :apple:Pay? Unless i'm missing something...

And the reason I no longer have a regular Wells Fargo/Bank of America bank account or any other regular bank account, is due to having identity theft... and oddly, not from an online attack, but from the real world; you know when you hand over all of your personal information including your social security number to the $10 an hour office assistant at the Doctor's office whose boyfriend happens to be a gangbanger and turns around and sells your information to a bunch of lowlifes all over the U.S.... that's what happened to me in Los Angeles and I'm still paying the price for it!

Good. PayPal locked my account, and demanded my birth certificate or driver's licence to unlock it. They never told me why, even when I asked.

And no, I've never used it for anything that could be seen as being the slightest bit dodgy.

I hope ApplePay takes a hammer to PayPal's revenue.

Apple plays with big boys (Visa and MasterCard). So forget about PayPal. I never like them.

If Apple had got the deal Samsung has, the posts for this topic would be very different.

Very true. We would be bemoaning the death of Apple's class, ethics, and good taste. We'd be crying over a deal that would do nothing but bring Apple down. We would be sad that Satan's forces had scored a victory.

Thank god that didn't happen.

Death to Paypal

As Paypal is now being spun out, Apple should buy them, barring any monopoly concerns.

Not sure if I'd want that, considering paypal stores all credit card info and Apple hasn't exactly proven to have the best security.

Also Paypal is a disgusting company to deal with.

A question about :apple:Pay versus PayPal:
The only time I ever use PayPal is to pay for something on eBay or to get paid on eBay. Paying is nice. Getting paid sucks because of the fees. As far as person-to-person payments what alternative is Apple offering here? I understand how it will work in stores and online dealing with merchants. But is there something coming down the line that allows for person-to-person payments?

It's mainly because of laws, paypal need to know that you're a real person - also helps against fraud, but they should tell you why.

PayPal really blew it by being impatient. From what i've seen, PayPal is not making huge inroads into point-of-sale payment processing.

With the Apple deal with the banks and major credit cards, PayPal could have easily piggybacked on Apple Pay to get into the bricks-and-mortar retail space a lot more easily than they could on their own. Do you think Samsung and PayPal are going to be able to negotiate the kind of deal Apple did? I don't think so.

But if PayPal is being spun off, i can see there being a bit of a bidding war to get in on that action. Apple, Samsung, Facebook, Google… there are going to be a lot of companies with deep pockets looking to get a piece of that pie.

That may be true, but they have to be joking if they think I'm going to give them a photocopy of my birth certificate or driver's licence.

Paypals huge and more of a virtual service, honestly the only threat to PayPal is their attempt at having a payment system at shops but that hasn't ever taken off - I hope apple pay replaces them, but it will only to an extent. Can't forget either that ebay owns paypal and a lot of paypals transactions are via ebay - plus a ton of online shops use paypal I can't imagine they're feeling 'that' threatened. :p

My feelings exactly.

Buy Paypal from eBay before they spin off and cancel all contracts for renegotiation as a condition.

AAPL can afford it and Paypal is dominant.

Paypal for what it does now.

Apple for consumer security, retail POS and square like mobile. Apple needs to make pay in store, at mobile site, and at any and all cloud.

Jerry

Buy Paypal this month.

Works for me. As folks have mentioned, the fees paypal takes are not welcome, whether you send or receive $.

I finally closed my paypal account last week and I am glad, makes me aware of my priorities and needs/wants. If I must have something either cash or debit card (which is thankfully used less and less all the time.)

He didn't, but a few hundred people here did.

When you hack iCloud, you get naked pictures of celebrities. When you hack Paypal accounts, you get a direct line into their checking account with no legal recourse to getting your money back.

I think for most people having your paypal account hacked is more of a problem. Nobody wants to see 99.999% of the nude pictures that are floating around. There are lots of people who would love to drain your bank account.

Not only does Paypal/eBay keep raising fees, they also institute what they call a 'Rolling Reserve' on sellers who are moving any type of significant volume. Which pretty much is their way of holding thousands of sellers dollars for 3-6 months without paying them interest on it. Google and read up on it.

Hope Apple Pay drives them into the ground.

Whenever I see a "pay with paypal" retail POS notice I always ask the clerk whether anyone actually uses it. Apparently there's one guy who uses it in the nearby home depot. I only know of five places that have the "pay with paypal" capability, so my sample size is pretty bad.

Does anyone know the real usage #s for those things?
