I really don't understand people's need for this. When I was in primary school, I would have preferred to have simply touched an erase icon, or gestured on the pencil to erase something, rather than stop and change my entire workflow to flip the pencil over, then flip it back. But the technology didn't exist then. It does today.

Of course it can be compatible with older iPads if they go full wireless charging. You'll just need an adapter for it. However, the new features aren't likely to function with an older iPad, knowing Apple, but I would still chose the latest Pencil to avoid early obsolescence in the event I were to upgrade my iPad.

The reason i want is so that i don’t have to put down the pencil to use my hand to erase. It’s an accessibility issue for many people. It’s also more precise than a finger. And it’s worked great for more than a century.

If the new pencil has three sides it will be easier to hold and easier to magnetically attach to the rumored straight side of the new iPad pro

Since the butt end is no longer a removable cap/charge point, I hope you can flip the pencil upside down and use that end as an eraser.
If it supports gestures, wouldn't a simple tap transforming tip to an eraser make more sense instead of flipping it every time? Skeuomorphism holds little value once the replacement gesture or icon becomes commonplace.

If they are doing this only wireless via a magnet etc stuff then it won’t be compatible with the older iPads. And frankly I dont see them doing it like that for just that reason. There are folks that still have functioning iPad Pros under 2 years plus the iPad 2018 that might want to use this new Pencil for its fancy new features that will only need software updates to work on older hardware.

The only hiccup would be the charging. it would be silly for Apple to cut those folks off when they could just keep the lightning port (which would also be useful for customers that end up with a bum pencil that stops wirelessly charging but the next appointment at their local apple store is a week ago, which happens a lot, or the store has to order the pencil, which also probably happens a lot).
It's very clear from this rumor (which sounds like a leak) that Apple is going with what you call the silly option: The new pencil will not be compatible with older ipads. There is no other option if the charging part of the rumor is true. Those of us with older ipad pros and first generation pencils will have to upgrade both at once.

Or just let people choose how they prefer to do it? I know I would want to flip the pen.

Yep. This is definitely going to be an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil focused event. For those hoping for big news on the Mac front, you might be disappointed. We are probably looking at the following: rMB refresh internals, Mac Mini refresh internals, discontinue MBA (replaced by a low cost rMB with 128 GB storage and older internals).

I wonder if the Apple Pencil could evolve into a better alternative than mouse support for the iPad? It will be interesting to see where it goes.

Maybe not, if the new pencil can be charged with the smart connector.

I don't really follow this. Why would you have to put it down and used your hand? The end of the pencil just changes function based on tapping the eraser icon on the screen menu, or better yet, simply gesturing with the finger already holding the hand. Quick and simple, no flipping the pencil, no putting it down.

No, there could simply be an adapter for older iPads to charge it, or even Apple's AirPower charging mat would work.

've been waiting for an Apple "Graphics Tablet" ever since they announced the Pencil.

Apple's been there, done that:

I still have a (non-functional) one kicking around in my "Apple Museum" (junk room)...

I have an iPad 10.5 and the Kuomo case that also holds the pencil
(https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B073BHG329/)

I don’t think I’d want the pencil magnetically attached to the side of the iPad - to me, that’s much more insecure than the case option I have, and more liable to losing the pencil.
If it charges whilst attached, I can see the functional benefit, but I think I’d still go with my existing system..

This rumor clearly suggests that the cap will not be detachable and the only charging option will be the wireless one.
BT pairing, no metal band, no seam near the top in the pic all point to that.
So no adapters. AirPower mat is almost certainly not coming any time soon and even if it does having it as the only charging method for those with older ipads is not a viable option.

No need to reinvent a new gesture for something that already exists and is ubiquitous, though, no? We all already know when you want to erase something you flip the pencil over. Heck my wacom tablet stylus has done this for years.

Procreate has been the first to address this in the most straightforward manner - two finger tap - and it really should be default in the OS from there on out. :)

Are you serious? o_O

Apple also had a tablet computer before the iPad. Your point is... ?

Yeah the design is neat, but I don't like the fact that there is cut content on the rounded corners. If you watch a movie or play a game that's fitted to an ipad screen, you're going to miss a small amount of content. This sucks. Style over function, that's the way it goes with Apple these days it seems...
