Why are so many confusing free speech and hate speech? What Info Wars has been spewing has little to do with the former, therefore this decision is, if anything, overdue.

Whoosh.

This isn’t about Apple, this is about mass censorship.

Once again, man I am bored of asking this, what happens when someone you agree with gets banned from all major online platforms within a few weeks?

What happens when this happens to a politician you are voting for?

It doesn't matter where you fall on the spectrum, you should prepare for social ramifications when what you say is distasteful to society at large, as has always been the case. If by some twist the amorality that Trump represents becomes the societal norm across the USA, then this will be the reality 'liberals' have to adjust to - mass suppression of their 'liberal' ideals.

All private forums have had forms of curation and censorship (audience at a friend's house, a bulletin board in a town square, advertisements on TV, TV shows themselves, online chat rooms, etc.). What is being argued is the 'righteousness' of this practice which has existed for decades. Based on the COMPLETE lack of novelty in this situation, I can only assume that what is being argued is being argued because of the polarizing political situation, and is being argued for political ends. If people truly want a "wild west" forum, they ought to create an open source Facebook. But who likes putting work in to attain their vision of the future? Complaining is far easier.

You might be doing a little projecting there. "mexico is sending their rapists" and "build the wall" sounds exactly like racist identity politics to me.

The American left has gone insane? Is this really coming from someone who voted for a reality TV host who pays pornstars for sex, tweets insults all day, and thinks the climate change is a myth invented by China? Not only as the American right gone insane, but they've gone so insane they've lost the capacity for basic self-awareness of that insanity. Unbelievable.

And if you're curious about the formation of authoritarian dictatorships look no further than Donald "the free press is our enemy" Trump.

How is “Mexico sending their rapists” racist? That’s not a claim at all about Mexicans all being rapists by any means - why do you see it as a blanket statement against them?

How is “build the wall”, an inanimate object racist? There’s nothing against immigrants. Illegal aliens, yes. Hence the wall. Increase border security, reduce the drugs and illegal guns coming in the country and illegal aliens.

Lastly, he never said “the free press is the enemy of the people” - he said “fake news media is the enemy of the people”, something you just fell victim to.

“Those emails transformed into a conspiracy about child abuse on the anonymous message board 4chan, seeped out on to forums like Reddit and Facebook

Hmm those apps are still on the store, and so is Twitter

https://twitter.com/hashtag/pizzagate?lang=en

Also YouTube.

So why aren’t those apps banned?
[doublepost=1536448969][/doublepost]

Possibly, I don’t know. All I know is that he was targeted and deplatformed.
Because the banned apps promote hatred at their core while the apps you cite are general apps with some hate speech sneaking in. The difference is lost on extremists.

What rights don’t Muslim women have on us soil?

Can’t wear miniskirts, can’t talk to another man with out being escorted by another man, it’s anlong list.

When hating some one politically we are then talkin about political standpoints. You think one should accept nazi sympathisers? Turn other cheek? Worked great for Jews... or maybe you learn something about history and make sure that those who want to destroy the ideals of democracy will never succeed.

We have safe guards in place to prevent another Hitler and deal with nazi sympathizers. But thanks for playing Sport.

That has NOTHING to do with rights and everything to do with religious views that they hold themselves to.

Hate speech is defined by online platforms, to protect its members feelings from other members and none members.

There is no true definition of hate speech.

Alex Jones is the equivalent of the guy who signs on the dotted line without reading the contract, then gets upset when he gets burned.

The rules are what they are, he broke them.

Many didn’t chose those religious views, instead they are born in to it and oppressed by men they are married to.

Look up pictures of women in 70s in Middle East countries. Muslims (not all but many), bring that oppression of their women in to our country and we alow it.

The trend of the book 1984 censorship is done by large corporations and not the government in the U.S. is an alarming trend of limiting free speech just like it is now done in liberal colleges. It truly not the land of the free and home of the brave with this censorship happen everywhere. This country is becoming more like China, Russia, Venezuela, Germany, Sweden!

It's true most people tend to follow the religion for either the area or family/group they were born/raise in. Some do change or leave those religions and yes there are many that are oppressed in their current situation. With that, none of that changes the fact that Muslim women, and anyone else for that matter of any religion, in America still have the same Rights as everyone else. If they follow their specific religious views, they do so on their own accord. One can argue that they are being oppressed by X but again that still has ZERO to do with the Rights they still have in this country. There is no law that states that have to follow their religious views.

The point I was trying to make. Muslim bible is on App Store and so is the Catholic bible.

Even though catholic priests have raped and molested children for centuries and continue to do so till this very day. Their bible app is still on every platform and no one bets an eye.

That would be the Quran, the Bible is the Christian book, both have their own respected names to reference their religious text. Just as the Torah is the Jewish text. And yes I believe all have apps on the app store. The apps themselves and even the religion itself is not responsible for the individual acts of those priests and others who do harm in the name of that religion. Those people don't represent the religion as a whole and there is no reason to think Apple or anyone else would pull those apps because of the individual actions of people unrelated to the app itself.

Now apply same logic to Alex Jones app. He personally did not harm anyone. Thus he can’t be responsible for other people’s actions.

This censorship is far more troubling than any of the nonsense coming out of Infowars.

As for the "hate speech" argument, it seems to be used by liberals to include anything which goes contrary to their agenda. It's simply fascism cloaked in virtue signalling.

So you would find someone getting in trouble/banned from a movie theater for yelling that there is a fire when there is none - repeatedly? Because that is the essence of what Jones has done with his platform. There is a family restaurant that had a gun fired in it and a family that - after having their child killed - was foxed, harassed, and threatened so much they’ve moved more often in the past decade than a military family.

At this point it is a case public safety to remove his app.

The rapist/murderer comments where saying that only such people where coming in from Mexico. That is racist.

The racism in the wall is the intent. Then there is also the other reasons it’s bad - but hey, if someone’s house has to burn down because the fire department has to get past a wall so we can keep out people with darker skin, so be it.

Context. If it’s not positive of him - at least the vast majority of the time - he calls it fake news. When the people in power threaten the press credentials of those who disagree with them solely because they disagree with the way they are presented - that’s trying to suppress free press.

Jones’s content is still available. Just not in a format that has even a semblance of endorsement by apple.

Jones has violated the TOS of Apple/Twitter based on his own actions. This is not the same as the examples you are trying to use to justify why AJ should not be banned.

You can’t ignore a person in a movie theater yelling fire. You can ignore Alex Jones in your personal life, unless he walked in to a movie theater and started shouting.

He can’t be responsible for some person opening gun fire in a restaurant. Many people call him a nut-job. Be an adult and ignore what he says. And if Jones gets a gun and opens fire in public, throw him in jail or take him down.

But if he wants to be a nut job and say what ever he wants then let him be. Other nut jobs continue to operate on social media.

Seems to me, he got singled out by every platform.

No. They don’t. Fox News sometimes has the highest ratings because it’s the ONLY mainstream conservative news on TV. CNN has to compete with NBC, ABC, MSNBC, and CBS news for viewers but all of those networks hold essentially the same political views. Conservatives most certainly do not have as much of a presence in the media as anyone. They have a presence sure but you’re lying if you say they have as many tv networks and “news” outlets. They simply don’t. There are likely a lot of reasons for this including the obvious which is that the aidiece for cable news is larger on the liberal side of the political spectrum so there are more networks but I also think most of those companies are owned by liberal leaning people and they want their views to be the mainstream.
You are making an assumption that the news has to be one or the other. news is supposed to be neutral. Fox isn't sinclare isn't and they own more local news stations than any other company. Trust me this victim mentality of conservatives is just a distraction. there are just as many conservative voices out there, probably even more than liberal. Stop playing the victim. Alex jones is a nut-job. You want to claim him as a conservative voice that should be heard? Go ahead but it just makes conservatives look even more stupid than they already look considering their choice for president.

That's a really good point, with Sinclaire, the conservative agenda has reached the local news broadcasts.

You are clearly biased and not willing to accept the state of media. No news is neutral. You pretending it’s otherwise is nonsense. You have not read to a word I’ve written if you think I claimed Jones is a conservative voice that should be heard. You calling conservatives stupid shows you fall into the us vs them mindset that is plaguing our country right now. I’m really disappointed in how few people seem to be able to see things from another persons point of view and rather demand that person be told to fall in line or shut up.

To summarize this threads key points:

1) Understanding civics is not a strong point on this or other web sites. Since Twitter and Apple are private companies, their restricting Alex Jones' speech on their platforms doesn't have anything to do with Jones' 1st Amendment Constitutional right to free speech.

2) Most people are hypocrites and if someone they support was banned, they would howl. Most people think Alex Jones is a lunatic so they don't care.

3) Everybody knows that there is a bias against right wing, or even conservatives who say controversial things on social media and left wing comedians, etc., who harass or use hate speech are generally ignored. Kudos to Twitter CEO for at least being willing to admit it publicly. This bias is because the people who run and work at these companies are overwhelmingly left leaning, again as Jack concedes. If the situation was reversed, the banning bias would be in the other direction.

4) Major tech companies, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google and Apple grew up in an atmosphere where they were protected as platforms that allowed unrestricted speech with very few limitations that were fairly universally agreed upon such as threats of violence, etc. but now that they have achieved oligopoly status their impact on determining what people can see and heard is a concern.

A future in which they control all on line discussion and "de facto" determine what thoughts can be expressed is not hyperbole and not far off. Since they are private entities (see #1 above), their ability to favor/censor political candidates, religious and social viewpoints, limit what news we see, etc., has grown to a level of control that was previously unimagined except in totalitarian countries like North Korea, and they will soon have a chokehold that should alarm everyone, regardless of your politics.
