Thanks Samsung for developing, manufacturing and beta testing our OLED panels. We will still say Apples implementation is way better though.

Hold on. If Apple can't "get it right" in co-developing a mundane 4K or 5K LCD monitor with LG, why would you expect Apple to have better technology to implement OLED in smart phones than Samsung who is a pioneer in OLED display technology?

Did they not produce an excellent monitor? I mean, besides the shielding issue which has little to do with the panel and doesn't seem to be a huge issue.

The panel itself would be the same as on Samsung phone I guess, but if Apple makes it 3D-touch, better laminated, sans rounded corners or with a different use of the curve, it's still their implementation of that same tech.

It's ironic to think back to the news in February 2013, when:

"At a Goldman Sachs investor conference today, the Apple CEO dismissed the idea that [OLED] display technology is something Apple should adopt."

and

Cook, asked if Apple would consider creating devices with larger displays, said that size and specifications are things companies focus on when they can’t “create an amazing experience.”

Not really. And if you do not change and adapt you get left behind. Thankfully Apple knows this and is willing to look forward and not to the past like yourself.

Let's hope they can fill the order so we will not have shortages on release day as in previous years .

That's what drives demand. No matter what, they want that "shortage" at the start.

The long wait time for availability of the 7 caused me to just not buy one. I figured 'hey, I've waited this long, may as well just wait until next year." It's the first model of iPhone I passed on. I did the same with AirPods, I was looking forward to a pair, but opted for a different brand of wireless as the wait times are just too long.

Luckily, this isn't how the vast majority of buyers act. Limited availability actually drives sales up, which is why they create it with all products that are wild successes.

You're comparing a display on an iPhone (their golden child) with an external monitor with no apple logo on it. Not even close to the same thing.

OLED is the best thing that can happen to iPhone.
only color blind people might deny how superior OLED screens are to even the best LCD screens.it's just another level of colorfulness, saturation and blacks.
absolutely hate LCD.
LCD = pale, cold and boring..

Apple should be careful, Samsung has a terrible reputation for exploding hardware. I would double or triple check all 70 million units for defects.

I'm not a fan of over saturation. However, I do like the complete black of OLEDs.

So this is how Samsung designed the Galaxy S8, they already knew about the shape of the OLED screens Apple was ordering!

I remember when Steve jones said IPS was better, funny how time has made most of what he said promoting the iPhone come undone.

OLED has mostly surpassed IPS in pretty much every way except off-axis viewing (color-shift issue still remains).

*sigh*

There is, for all intents and purposes, no real difference between the achievable color accuracy of modern LCDs and OLEDs. I've broken out the numbers in these forums enough times now, I'm not going to do it again, but if you look at the DisplayMate measurements you'll see the iPhone 7 has better color reproduction than the S7. How much better depends on taste. If you keep your S7 in it's default mode then the colors are 30% over saturated. In the "basic" mode, which is the most color accurate, the S7 is a fraction of a JNCD worse on average, and a couple worse worst case.

For reference, a JNCD is a "just noticeable color difference"-- the smallest perceivable change in color that a non-color blind person can detect.

As far as the black levels are concerned, the "infinite contrast" claims are only valid in absolute darkness. The contrast differences between the S7 and iPhone 7 are a wash as soon as there's about 8cd/m^2 in the room. That's barely enough to even turn on your color vision.

So the technology choice isn't about color reproduction, it's about other system design differences (thickness, flexibility, partial illumination at fractional power). If you prefer the Samsung colors, it's not because OLED has better color it's because you have a personal preference for the highly saturated color curve Samsung applies by default.

OLED doesn't mean over saturation.
they can be adjusted easily, but in every setting colors pop out and blacks are really deep and natural without being artificial.
