Well my issue with the current remote and Apple Tv is it is Infra Red!!!!! I mean what is this, 1995?

My apple Tv is hidden away inside a cupboard so I rely on the Remote App via Ipad to control it.

However, because this is an annoying procedure (more annoying than simply using a TV remote) I find myself barely using the Apple Tv.

The new one will be good.. just wait and see :D
atv has bluetooth, you can use a mini keyboard w trackpad if you really want or other bt devices.
btw a ‘simple’ tv remote is infrared. Newer remotes are bt only ;)

Too little too late. We just bought 2 Rokus and we are loving them. The ancient (Gen 3!) Apple TV couldn't even once stream Netflix or HBO without interruption. The Rokus (and here's a familiar phrase) "Just Work". NEVER interruption in the buffer, NEVER a problem with the internet connection, NEVER a problem loading the content. I think my wife would divorce me before she would let me bring the new Apple TV into the house and replace the Rokus.

Too late.... I love my Amazon Fire TV, use it every day, cut that cord!!

It's great that Apple and others are 'helping' TV to be offered for online streaming only subs, just a shame here in the UK it is yet to take off. Hopefully TV Player will launch it's subscription service soon, you get discovery and the History channel then plus others.
Would be nice if we had that Gamefly service too in the UK.

Online streaming IS the future of TV though.

We are heavy Apple TV users but ours seems to work fine as is. Usually I use the iPhone remote app. We'll probably wait and get the new one in a year or so when it's settle out.
It does work fine, but wouldn't it be nice to have one menu where you can see all available shows in one interface without having to drill down into different services like Netflix, Hulu, Apple Store, etc ?

I really hope "touch-based" is nothing more than a handheld Macbook trackpad.

Ready for the remote! The current one gets lost too much.

Agreed, but don't like the idea of it being touch-based. I don't want to have to look at it.

Although I'm excited for the new Apple TV, I don't like the idea of a touch based remote. The current remote is such a nice example of the Keep It Simple philosophy that made Apple famous, and that's getting more and more lost each day... :-(

You guys are making very different assumptions from me regarding this new remote. I'm picturing something very much like the existing one, but with a circular (or ring shaped) touch pad instead of the round button. You wouldn't have to look at in any more than you do the current one, it wouldn't be any fussier, but it would be just as easily lost.

4K TVs are very cheap these days

They are? Will you buy me one then? They still look incredibly expensive to me.

I feel you, but the current remote may simply not be robust enough to handle the hopefully many new features. Time will tell.

Apple could make billions if they released the AppleTV with an app store and gamecontrollers.. instead apple choose to go all in on the apple watch... go figure.

Oh man, this would be great. I love my Xbox One, but an Apple TV gaming system... I'd never leave the couch. Wait. Not much would be different.

Wishlist: Two models: Apple TV Pro- $350. Competes with Xbox and PS4, has high end chip and comes with a controller. Standard Apple TV- $69. Has latest A-chip and competes with Roku, etc. It also streams games from ATVP to any TV on network (similar to the upcoming Steambox). Boom.

All of these technologies that Apple has integrated into the iOS ecosystem lately that would make for a better Apple TV experience makes me think that they may actually have some sort of strategic plan.

Bluetooth LE
Homekit
Slide Over
Deep search
Side loading apps (iPhone:Apple Watch::Apple TV:Remote)
Hey Siri
Picture-in-Picture
iCloud Photos (now with video)
Proactive/Intelligence

The article states "a touch-pad based remote", not a touchscreen. I'm expecting something more along the line of a mini laptop touchpad, or a ring-pad like the old iPods had. In any case, I guess the pad will be used for gestures more than anything else.

Air Video app for Apple TV, please.

If it has current spec hardware I'd be surprised if they didn't charge many hundreds of dollars.

Touch based doesn't necessary mean you will to look at it any more than your current apple remote. It might simply mean it supports touch gestures, and or pressing different part of the remote do different things without a physical button.

The thing is most tech users simply use Logitech Harmony remotes since it can control all devices. With this new apple remote it won't control all your other devices, and scenes, unless they add sensors and such like Harmony which is doubtful.

Just bought one, i can use it for waching youtube or just stream vids from my apple devices... nothing more -.-" totally useless in some countries

Probably cost a little more. $129? I'll be getting one.
Doubtful. They were originally 99, but since they are so old they were reduced to 69. So presumably the new ones will be the same as the when they were released last time, "99". If anything the price will go down however not up since there goal is to get them into as many houses as possible so they have more negotiating power with networks.

Maybe this new one will double as a games pad.
Would make more sense to for people to simply use their iPhone for that which already has an Apple Remote app. Wouldn't make much sense to have a remote that is as powerful as an iPhone if we already have iPhones.

Since games on the iPhone basically looks as good as they do on the "real" gaming consoles this will be a sweet little machine for casual gaming.. Just give me an emulator app as well, please? :)

Buzzfeed is now a credible news source? Really? And no misuse of the word "hacks?"
Yes. Buzzfeed has long been a credible news source, employing real journalists. They got some world class long form writing even. Just like Vice is no longer just a fashion shaming street rag, Buzzfeed is no longer just clickbait listicles.

I dunno I pay $25 for cable.. or at least I paid until I cancelled 2 years ago.

That would be EXTREMELY cheap, and is not the norm. 'Lifeline' cable around here where you JUST get local channels is $29. Then you get a leasing fee for the cable box of $8 or if you want a DVR it's $15 more. Then add taxes, and 3 rooms, that comes to about $75.

For a one TV household, you can get it down to $45 or so, but that's just for local channels you can get with an antenna anyways. To get packages with the channels you want, it's over $100 minimum
