Sounds good to me, it's all about concept, talent and execution. If you told me years ago some of the best shows on "TV" would be from the company who mails you DVDs or the company who sells you books, I would've said you're nuts :D

Just imagine how Blockbuster feels.

I'd rather them focus on producing better hardware and leave the shows to someone else.

It makes sense for them to expand in this area. They have made Apple TV/Music somewhat of a priority and in order to compete with companies like Amazon and Netflix it's what they need to be on par with what those other companies already have, original content.

Aaaaaaaand pretty much everyone who's not in the Apple ecosystem would drop Netflix and get Hulu or some other service. People damn near revolted when Netflix wanted to raise prices $2. So I'm not sure how you think anyone would be willing to pay an extra $5 Apple tax to use Netflix.

So $9.99 on other platforms and $7.99 on ATV.

"Available Only on Apple TV" I'm sure...yet another bad idea. There are already plenty of streaming options...shouldn't Apple concentrate more on physical product (you know...the stuff people have been clamoring for for years)?

There were tons of cell phone options too. Apple probably should have left that alone.

Apple leverages its Apple Music streaming service to go into video streaming. Charges a single fee to customers for both music and tv shows. Possibility of undercutting both Spotify and Netflix.

I am not sure where Siri plays into all of this, but I am willing to bet that this is simply the start of Apple's ascent in this media market.

I think it was more of the, "Apple is actually so far ahead people can't even begin to understand."

Are they ahead? Seems like they're so far behind at the mo.

never thought of this. it would be a big move and a smart one.

Disney would add way too much bloat to Apple. Disney owns a lot of companies, including TV networks and movie companies ( i.e., touch stone ).

Apple are having issues managing its existing product lines, let alone dozens more.

There's a saying - he who laughs last laughs best.

I posted a link to an article offering an in-depth look into what Apple might be up to, right after your reply. Worth a read, should you feel so inclined.

This kind of thing reminds me of Microsoft 20 years ago.
I would rather they made Apple TV 4K (like almost every competitor)
I like that comparison. And much like Microsoft 20 years ago, Apple is a company at the top of its field, trying to figure out where to go next rather than doubling down on the things that put it where it is today. It took Microsoft a bunch of failures in different fields to start getting back to a coherent vision about what it wants to do as a company - being the underdog is easier than being on top.

Create a subsidiary based in LA and have Eddy Cue run it. Then hire a proper SVP of cloud services and give that person iCloud, Maps and Siri responsibilities.

Great. In related news, the Mac R&D budget was slashed, and the team re-assigned to "write awesome new content".
Would be better than the lame comments we get here.

Good gracious me, some people in this world really are thick.

Does anyone think they will be pulling their best innovators and engineers from MacBook projects and asking them to write movie scripts?

Haha! Melts.

that guy is truly useless

Yeah, read it..
With iTunes they managed to get ahead of a painfully slow music industry before anyone else.
Netflix and Amazon have done that with TV and Apple are way behind.

You're missing the point. No one is going to pay more simply because they don't use an ATV. Whether its $2, $5, or $50 - it's the psychological barrier of paying a "perceived" Apple tax. Only people (some, not all) in the Apple ecosystem are willing to pay 15-30% more for services they can get cheaper elsewhere.

That being said, there's a larger curiosity that needs addressing. What's the genesis of the idea that Apple would even consider a discount for ATV users? That's not in Apple's DNA. Apple sets a price and you accept it or you don't. If Apple were to consider buying Netflix (they shouldn't) they should leave it alone. If they're going to leave it alone, they don't need to buy it. There's nothing strategically advantageous to doing it.

edit: did a little research regarding the viability of Apple buying Netflix. My previous argument about price differences pales in comparison to a more relevant reason Apple wouldn't buy Netflix. Continuing investment. Beyond the initial acquisition cost, the running of Netflix would be a beast, even for a company as cash flush as Apple. Example: Netflix is reportedly set to spend $6 billion on content for 2017. Apple's entire R&D budget for 2016 was a little over $10 billion. Netflix will spend approximately 60% of Apple's R&D budget... just for content. Netflix would eat profit and margin. We both know that's a no no in Cupertino.

Stick with your core competencies Apple and that doesn't include creating movies and TV shows.

Stay away from media creation / ownership - once that becomes a big enough component of your organization you go to war with your users (because they "steal" your product) and the companies interests (protecting IP ownership and control) no longer match those of their customers (see Sony). Apple needs to stay away from that area and just make great hardware. JMHO....

It's actually pretty interesting.

The only reason "The Man in the High Castle" was able to be made was because Amazon was free from the political constraints that big name media companies always have placed upon them. The show ended up being amazing because it was something different, and scary/creepy as hell especially in today's political climate.

However, I don't think Apple should join this fray. They've already spread themselves thin and don't seem to be keeping up with the rest of the industry on hardware anymore. They should go back to doing what they did best.

When you wield absolute control over your own ecosystem the way Apple does, you are never behind.

Yeah I've never understood that sentiment... As if the hardware engineers could switch over and start mastering video.

This makes terrible business sense. You have to adapt and evolve to survive. If Apple had taken this route 10 years ago they'd already be dead.

The definition of "lost the plot."

APPLE, MAKE COMPUTERS WORTH BUYING.

Looks like Apple has way bigger fish to fry at the moment.

Look on the bright side of things. If Apple does continue to neglect the Mac in 2017, at least it will not have been in vain.

and they should make sure the production company doesn't bother filming in 4K - because why bother.
