Apple Posts iPhone 3G Guided Tour

Yes, it follows you, shows this in the video in fact.

What it does not do is give you voice turn by turns. Or traverse your route, it will, however, keep your current position in the center.

I don't think this is Apple's problem to deal with, in any case. Apple is not a mapmaking company, nor have they ever developed GPS navigation software. Google has a Map feature which can be accessed through the iPhone, but was never intended to be a turn-by-turn navigation program. So, for now, the ball's in Google's court; will they get this going on the iPhone or not?

If Google doesn't do it, it's only a matter of time before TomTom or Magellan or someone else makes an App for the iPhone with this feature.

What makes someone ugly to me has more to do with how they treat others rather than their appearance.
That's very Man 2.0 of you. Those still using Man 1.0 call someone who treats people well "nice" rather than "handsome/not ugly", and I'm still on Man 1.0, so forgive me ;).

Anyway, the guy performs like a marketing manager - which, for Apple, is what he is. He makes very tightly controlled, unnatural movements, as if he has read somewhere that each particular flinch is going to reach out to people and help convey his point. Consider hand movements: when a Spaniard in my family talks with emotion, their hands are all over the place - but how they move reflects their mood, the expression in their eyes, their tone of voice. With him, each of his body parts are disconnected. I was almost reminded of WhoseLineIsItAnyway where someone plays someone else's hands.

He'd be better off hiring an actor who knows how to simulate what looks natural, and sync his tone of voice with his face with his arms.

Humans notice this stuff. They often can't explain the incongruence they're picking up, and it comes out as "creepy" or whatever. It's all part of our evolved survival skillset, because we need methods beyond "he said it so it must be true" of determining whether someone is trustworthy.

i'll check this out when i get a chance

I don't know about everyone else but I don't really care. Why do people write such pointless posts?

If you think this guy is a bit creepy, you should see some of the guys who do the iPhone SDK videos...

I get that he works in the iPhone division, but given the depth he's going into, anyone could do it. I definitely think the Air guy should do all the Apple videos. I might be wrong but I think I remember him saying he works at an Apple Store - they're the kind of people who should be on camera instead of product managers.

Wow. Stereotype much? I'm sure the many people who've shared the opinion on this thread are just like that.

I'm just so thankful that we have normal people like you on this board with whom we can interact ...
Wow dude. Did that hit too close to home? I was talking about how people judge others appearance based on stupid culture specific stereotypes. What is creepy to one culture is perfectly normal to another.

The funny things is that these stereotypes are so often wrong.

Take for example a situation where someone comments that a certain guy looks like a serial killer but in reality he might be the nicest and most sensitive guy around.

Often times the most successful serial killer, rapist, etc... look nothing like the stereotype some people have in their minds which is how they often are able to get away with their crimes for so long.

I just think a bunch of teenagers are in the thread as teens seem to think just about every adult over a certain age is "creepy" unless they are really famous.

I used to be a teen once but we all eventually grow out of it.

The GPS function with the maps program does look weak to me. One main reason I want to upgrade is to have a turn by turn GPS so I don't have to buy a TomTom or other device. But I don't want to keep hitting next when I make a turn way too distracting. I might hold off on the 3g until there is a app that can do what I would like.

Ahhh, I didn't notice that. I just saw the "having to continuously hit next, next..."

............snip...........Also, when he's explaining how to mass-delete/move e-mails, he talks about touching the circle on the left. Is it just me, or does anyone else NOT see a circle there until he actually pushes one? Maybe my eyesight's going, or it's just something that doesn't show up well on the video -- but I just thought it was strange he was mentioning circles and I couldn't see any (until pushed).

There are circles there, just really hard to see on the video, I paused it to get a better look. It's just an outline circle, not a filled dot as such.

TomTom is already reaching the end of development for their app for the iPhone:

I know I can't wait to sell my TomTom and have an all-in-one

I'm glad this it's not just me who thinks that these people they pick for the guided tours are weird.

And what's with the black clothing?

Gotta follow Steve Jobs :p.

One thing I noticed when he was discussing video: he says videos are displayed in landscape mode. So is there no new portrait mode? Wasn't that one of the new 2.0 features? (Though I don't know WHY anyone would want portrait mode for video).

It's weird. Portrait mode only works if you select the movie from the iPod lists such as artists, songs, etc....for some weird reason it doesn't work if you select it from the "Videos" tab. Hopefully they fixed it.

The circle is kinda light even on the iPhone itself. Your monitor is probably bright =P.

Right at the beginning when it shows the bottom of the phone... there are two screws!? Battery replacement now possible? :)

In order to take apart the old iPhone, you had to pry the black plastic off the phone, then unscrew two screws to get the aluminum part out.

With the entire backing being plastic, they had to put two screws at the bottom.

Looks like the iPhone3G will be easier to disassemble to make battery replacement easier (referring to two screws at the bottom.)

OMG - you nailed it. Especially the part where it reminded you of Whose Line Is It Anyway, and someone else's hands. That's EXACTLY what I was thinking.

Yeah, I would hire an actor if I was them. Or just use the MobileMe presenter, who is much more natural.

When using Google Maps Mobile on a Samsung Blackjack II, the blue dot does move as you move in a car. I would assume it's the same on the iPhone.

Could you imagine the board meetings... it would be like a funeral. What happened to apple being a company of white products (iBook, iMac, Macbook, iPod, all white!!)

wow, very obvious that he is not a natural, they should have used the other guy, who is much, much better at these videos.

Edit: I can't even watch 2 min of it, it was that bad.
