Steve Jobs yesterday said that Apple was the biggest mobile company in the world. He said they were even bigger than Nokia by revenue.

Well kind of outdated now. Nokia just announced today a quarterly revenue by 16.8 billion dollar while Apple only had 15.7 billion dollar.

Also Nokia's smartphone marketshare grew up from 35% to 40% and they sold almost 70 million smartphones in 2009.

I just bought books for my daughter, she is a college freshman, they cost me a small fortune. If all of them could be digital and downloaded to this one devise.... Now that would be awesome! Interactive textbooks wow what a concept, tons more nformation. Compare this to a Kindle or Sony's reader and there is no comparison.

Kindle and Sony's reader use eInk which is easy on your eyes and consumer very very little power. Therefore they are great for prolonged reading. iPad has normal display and not the eInk colour variant making not the ideal ebook reader. Waiting for rev. b.

Looking forward to bringing tech into the lounge.

Don't need to sit upright with a desktop, easier to kick back on the sofa than balancing a laptop on a cushion.

Wander from room to room reading the sunday papers, browse emails reclining in the lap of a loved one. Unchain me from the keyboard and set me free!

Apple is all about the experience of using its devices, not the bare tech specs.

Unlike some here, I don't know if the iPad will turn out to be a home run or a dud for Apple. Only time will tell. But to me, the most interesting part of yesterday's announcement was the A4 processor. By all accounts, and based on what I've seen in demos, it's very fast. If Apple starts to use it or similar processors in other mobile devices (including the next iPhone), they'll have an advantage over many of their competitors. When Steve Jobs talked about Apple being the world's largest mobile devices company, he lumped laptops in with iPods and iPhones. It'll be interesting to see if this new processor family finds its way into any of Apple's laptops.

I did get the feeling that was kinda cheap from them, and I get feeling the audience didn't buy it either given their reaction, or better put, lack of..

Why on Earth does she not visit the library?

Looking forward to bringing tech into the lounge.

Yup, maybe this is the new idiot box.

Maybe families' social skills will be hampered still further, or maybe everyone will be only talking on FaceBook in 5 years.

There is USB

and the developers have only seen this thing for a week - come launch time see what apps are available.

The flash issue is indeed an big one - waiting to see if there is a workaround like with youtube

I fail to comprehend that conclusion

its a tablet that does wordprocessing, videos, music and puts the internet in your hands.

silicone sleeves will be available on ebay by the end of the week for £3.

i don't believe many netbooks are droppable

You are free to think that - but i think you are missing a lot of the substance.

Will have to try out a competitor tablet and see how their multi touch works.
Anyone who has used an iphone will have HIGH standards.

I see what your saying, but really, most of my friends and colleagues have laptops which they can use sat on the sofa which gives them everything they want. I take my Macbook Pro with me places and its perfectly fine.

AND it can play football manager, the full thing not the crappy app store equivalents.

Its just really not very impressive for me personally...

Why on Earth does she not visit the library?

Eve known of a college that fills its shelves with dozens of copies if new textbooks - one for each student every year?

Maybe families' social skills will be hampered still further

quick - un plug your machine before you lose the power of speech!

Are you sure are on the right forum? :D

Personally I see it as a step forward, now I can sit on the sofa with the family while browsing instead of sat in the corner on an office chair...

Ever gathered everyone round a monitor to look at family holiday pictures?
Looking forward to doing just that with the iPad.

good price but eh

Pros in my opinion: good price point, phenomenal battery life if true, interesting keyboard idea (have to try to really see)

cons in my opinion: no usb? no full os? no tactile feedback? no pen? smaller then expected hard drives? no e-ink screen?

Just my thoughts but I'll pass on this one.

True. If you own an MBP you probabaly won't see the benefit of an iPad.

But I am looking forward to filling in the gap between my imac and my iphone.

If I need to do harcdore editing in FC or make some tunes in garageband - then I will use the desktop.

But looking at half the leisure time i spend on a computer - kicking back on the sofa looks much more comfortable with a tablet than a laptop.

And then there is possibilities of the multitouch......

But still, give most people the options they will opt for a laptop, it does more, for the same, if not less price and is just as convenient. It might be good at multitouch but i would say for the price and its features, a netbook or laptop is still much better value for the average person.

In fact most people i know now prefer laptops these days and id say 90% of people i know have one, and why would they bother spending the extra dosh to get a slate device. The iphone for 'sofa browsing' is perfectly adequate, this new device just is only for people who fall in a unique area where they do not have a laptop or an iphone.

cant see how a slate can be more comfortable than lying back than having a laptop on your lap, it would seem pretty much the same to me.

still.... no Football Manger 2010, its back to windows i go.... for the second time this year!

We look at them usng Apple TV on a 46" full HD plasma, not on a small screen at 1024x768, but each to his/her own I guess.

Well great for you.

but I quite like the idea of literally flicking through them together as a family instead of scrolling through them with a remote.

somehow seems more personal when you can hold them in your hands, pinch to zoom etc

I would give it a year or so to see how it sells.

I think when it comes to change - there will be a lot of people looking at maybe changing.

The game is changing....

It weighs the same as a magazine, doen't need resting. I think it might make make a big diffrence

still.... no Football Manger 2010, its back to windows i go.... for the second time this year!

That seems a pretty slim decison to keep with windows....

But i hope it works for you.

More customers with iPads = more revenue through the app store.
I think they're a little more forward thinking than that.

More customers with iPads = more revenue through happy customers (willingly?) locked into the Apple ecosystem.

Think about it...installed user base of 75 million including a cadre of youngsters weaned from their momma's teat straight to playing with an iPhone while waiting on line at the grocery store who already know how to use this OS. This is about extending the brand and capturing mindshare. Just like people bought DOS/Windows PCs for their homes in the 80s and 90s because that's what they were used to from the workplace. Today's kids, teenagers, and amazingly even a fair number of oldsters, are texting, touching, browsing, and swiping at a frantic pace. No other company even comes close to the software-hardware integration, consistent interface, and seamless syncing compatibility across devices as Apple.

As time moves forward, technology advances, and the the touch generation grows older, they will be inclined to maintain their software and hardware investment by sticking with Apple products and next generation iPads, which undoubtedly will eventually merge with the MacBook line as technology permits. A traditional laptop will look as clunky to them as a typewriter, rotary dial phone, or TRS-80 looks to us current 40-somethings.

Check out my library, it's nearly that good. What's she studying by the way?

Ever gathered everyone round a monitor to look at family holiday pictures?

You're right about this one, though usually now I stream through my PS3 so we can see the photos on 46" HDTV ;)

The iWork demo is by far the most interesting and telling bit of the whole presentation. This is the stuff that YOU CAN'T DO ON AN IPHONE. And these are for real, productivity apps built from the ground up for a touch interface. It's really remarkable, and shows the potential of the Touch OS.

Agreed. I don't know how useful it is for most professionals. Microsoft Office, like it or not, is the business standard. However, I think it does an outstanding job of showing off how developers can start taking advantage of this new device, and I think Mac inclined students will eat it up.

There are so many cool productivity apps on the iPhone that are very functional, but end up being little more than toys because of the iPhone's small screen. I'm thinking of the many art, animation, photo editing and music production apps out there. These will be orders of magnitude more interesting and usuable on the iPad. Just look at Brushes. Looked outstanding and it was basically just the iPhone version expanded to a larger format.

I am curious to see the eventual file size of these apps. The 16GB might prove to be way too small for more than a handful of programs when combined with music and video.

I'm really interested in buying the first gen, however I have a feeling we're going to start seeing a truly amazing device in a year's time.

I think we all wanted video conferencing. Regardless of not having it, the device itself is beautiful to build off of. The UI is amazing. I could say video conferencing would have just been icing on the cake but it should at least be able to have strengths in certain areas for people who are serious about creation. The normal apps, like iwork are a step in the right direction, but it isn't enough. The ipad is basically a base. If they really want to sell a whole slew of ipads, they need to seriously figure out a way for Adobe's Creative Suite to run on it. Also it would be great if Aperture could run on it as well, because as a professional, I sometimes want to do a lot more than share pics with my friends for fun. I need editing software, as I'm sure most do who love Apple. Maybe what they'll do is create an ipad pro? I don't know, but until these things come to fruition, my dough remains in my pocket. Sorry Apple, fanboy I am, but I also need productivity. Hopefully the second version will have all of this. :(

Woot !! Here is my take.

First off, I have a MBP hooked up to an ACD 20" and I have an iPod Touch (I got for free from a friend).

I purchased the MBP for its portability but found I didn't really want to move it off my desk much and find it a bit cumbersome to take around the house or when i'm hanging out with my family.

The iPod Touch is easier to take around but the small screen size was starting to get to me. I didn't like doing anything on it, but it is nice to just plop into my pocket and have it handy for when I need to look something up or email.

Now, I was looking for something that was more powerful than the Touch but easier to surf , email, watch movies etc wherever I wanted in my house or on trips. I don't need this thing on the go, just need it to be easier to handle in my house than moving my MBP.

The iPad fits my purpose here, my other option was the Air. Considering the price difference and since I already have a MBP, the iPad might be exactly what i'm looking for. I don't need the iPad, I would just like to have it.

I'll probably just get the 16gb version and just move content on and off (in conjunction with my MBP 320gb HD). I don't see spending $100 for 16gb more of storage.

PROS:

Great portability for surfing the web, watching movies, music, pictures, reading books.
IPS screen (nice)
Decent size compared with my Touch.
Easier to move around than my MBP
Looks pretty fast.
$500 isnt too bad of a price
Apps being developed for the iPad should be promising
Wifi (all I need, i'm only using it in my house or at work or wifi spots, i'm not paying for any more service, plus i'm not gonna be walking the streets with this thing)
Gaming - should be better than on the touch/phone. I personally don't play too many games anymore.
Nice battery (10 hours)

CONS:

Won't replace my MBP (lucky I have one already) Its a complement to your main computer.
Where is the flash ? Won't that become an issue with truly taking advantage of all content on the web?
No camera (probably in next revision)
Minimal storage unless you go for the $700 version (not happening, i'll just have to swap content in and out)
Sort of like an iPod Touch (however, I didn't pay for my touch so I have the money saved for this device)
You depend on the Apps. Hopefully they will be better for the iPad (catering more to its screen size and power)
Some might need to purchase another 3G service
Cost could be an issue to some for the higher storage.
No multitasking (WTF !)

Overall, I can handle $500 for what I need this device to do. I think it will nice to have it around the house and use it on trips or at work during break. I have a MBP so I don't need another computer or to have it replaced, just something to complement the things I do.

I'll be honest, I was not too impressed. I still see it as a larger iPod Touch. I know its better etc, but if you break it down, its a touch with some more ability and potential.

If your ok with the pros and cons, then I say purchase it. If you were looking for something greater, consider just getting a Macbook or MBP. Its as simple as that.

Cheers

Fair assessment and I pretty much fall in the same camp. Have an iMac for a desktop and carry my touch around the house. Would like something more substantial w/more screen real estate. Happy that it will run all my apps out of the box. Disappointed that the base model is only 16GB - I was expecting 32GB. I don't have $500 burning a hole in my pocket, so I'm probably holding off until gen 2. Btw, I do not agree w/SJ that it is the best web surfing experience. Sorry, but there's just too much flash out there and I'll have to switch machines to view flash content.

Take it from a college student, e-books are not really any cheaper than the traditional books. Also e-books are yours forever, you can't sell them back. While I paid a small fortune on textbooks I've also made a small fortune selling them on Amazon after I'm done with them. Plus a lot of textbooks the previous edition is far less expensive than the current edition, and most books you can get by using the previous edition. In fact a lot of my professors specifically suggest getting the previous edition and saving money. With e-books they would only sell the latest edition.

The e-books I was forced to get I wish were on a Kindle, reading the books on my computer screen dried out my eyes and gave me a headache after any long period of time.

The only advantage to e-books was having the ability to search in the document.

200+ Positive Posts? Really?

It's a NetBook "competitor\replacement" that's more expensive than a NetBook and can't even run Flash, and you people are still excited about the iPad?

I guess the Reality Distortion Field is stronger than I realized. Good luck when the novelty wears off and you realize that you just bought a big iPod Touch with some 3G capabilities. :D

I love Apple, but I cannot understand the use cases for this product. I'm sure the Apple faithful said the same thing about the iPod and the Intel chips when they were first announced, but the iPad is in a completely different category compared to those announcements.

That being said, I'm sure these things will still manage to sell like hotcakes. I would have preferred MacBook Pro updates as an announcement, though.

:apple: always FTW

Interesting device

I think the killer app for me and alot of other academics is Papers + iPad, otherwise it does not seem that useful to me.

I am wondering why in so many ways it seems limited. Can I stream my music and videos from my computer to the Ipad around the house? Why would I want to reproduce all my pictures and songs on yet ANOTHER device. If I cannot do this...why can't I? It seems pretty obvious. If I want to fill it up with pdfs, then I should be able to get home and stream all my stuff seamlessly. That seems pretty obvious and if it is not available is another way this device just makes me go...hmmm. If it is available - go Apple!

Anyways - Papers plus iPad is awesome. I had been looking at ereaders for just this purpose, but none of them will render the color pdfs and images like this thing will. The other features will be just be a bonus.

Also - why no handwriting, voice control or any other obvious things that all tablets have?

Also, I did not see textbooks in the iBookstore, but I have not been able to find out if you can write notes or highlight in the textbooks. If you cannot - definitely pointless to have textbooks.
