And at no time Apple has never copied features from Microsoft? Where do you think Spotlight and Time Machine came from?

I didn't realise backup was Microsoft's idea either?

And at no time has Windows ever pirated other codes.

Actually, Microsoft stole code from QuickTime. I appreciate you trying to add balance to the debate, but it is important to get the information right.

yep, you right click on a folder you want to restore, or see in the past
click on the previous versions tab:
restore_previous_versions_Doc.jpg

released for windows server 2003, and any clients that connect to it
and also in vista ultimate and business

there are loads of features apples copied, loads that Microsoft's coped, and loads that linux have copied
as others have said, its hard to be totally innovative these days

what did they take, and what for? just wondering...

Erm. Have you used Time Machine? Its completely different to Shadow Copy/Previous Versions. Completely different.

How do I restore a specific contact from my address book using Previous Versions?

Not easy

You do realize it was easy for Apple to pull this off because they have maybe 4-5% market share? Say what you want about Windows, but it holds 90%+ of the market, and thus it cannot easily be ported from one processor platform to another.

I think you meant to say that it affected a smaller market share than windows and so was less impactfull to computer users. In no way was this an easy task. An entire rewrite of the the OS would not be trivial whether your market share was 1% or 100%, Apple or Microsoft.

Is this guy an ex airline steward? Anyone know? I was half expecting him to say "Inflate your life vest by pulling on this cord" at any moment, in that condescending/simpleton type voice that such people use.

SJ should have done it. His enthusiastic "This is amazing" and "I really love this" and "This soooo cool" thrown in every other sentence always gets me jumping up and down and ordering anything he demos. But I already ordered so np :)

Exactly, not to mention MS failed to rewrite their OS even for the same chip!

There is a difference in Mac and PC backup / restore usage, on a Mac you are looking for a file. On Windows you are more likely to be trying to find a way to go back to a time when the bloody thing worked.

I'm not sure about everyone but I just feel that there is just not enough customization in the new features based on what I saw in the video. Again, I won't know this until I play with them in my hands.

So far just the lack of customization has disappointed me. Then again apple is never known for producing products that are highly customizable. Always locking it down to what steve wants.

I wish they made the horizontal menu bar a floating vertical menu bar like in NeXTSTEP . That was cool. Then I can place it anywhere on the screen. When you have a big high resolution monitor its not easy trying to select menu items. NeXTSTEP had the right idea. Wish more of the features were ported over.

See in this picture. So beautiful, simple and powerful. They should give you the option to change it vertically. That is so cool. It would be great on a large display. NeXTSTEP was ahead of its time. It still is!!! I just think they went backwards not adopting all of the features in NeXT.

Err... advanced applications have pretty loaded menu bars. You would either have to introduce confusing abbreviations for the menu bar sub entries, make the different items super wide or shrink the font down to a point it's no fun to read. Also, in leopard, you can search for the menu entry you need and it will take you to it by drilling down the menu bar. Problem solved.

I just wish I could have the menu bar on all screens when I have multiple screens attached. it's a little annoying to use an application in the secondary screen and having to move the mouse to the primary screen to access the app's menu. How about an option to move in the menu bar and dock to the screen your mouse cursor currently is?

That's not a backup tool, it's a revision control tool. They are two completely different things. Regardless the concept of Backup was still around well before windows server 2003 and Vista.

As others will point out Time Machine != Volume Shadow Copy.

what did they take, and what for? just wondering...

It's a long story — here is a summary:

Canyon was under contract with Apple to help create a new version of Apple's QuickTime for Windows video playback software. Apple worked closely with Canyon to help them accelerate the speed at which images are played back, disclosing proprietary acceleration techniques Apple had developed in-house. Canyon's contract with Apple contained prohibitions against disclosing Apple's code, and a specific clause in which they agreed not to work on any competing products.

A senior Intel official met Canyon officials at the rollout of Apple's new QuickTime for Windows. Intel subsequently contracted with Canyon to develop software that would give Video for Windows the same performance as QuickTime for Windows. The contract specified that Canyon would use the same acceleration techniques as used in QuickTime for Windows, and would deliver the program in less than seven weeks. Several thousand lines of code from QuickTime for Windows were included in the software Canyon delivered to Intel.

The pirated code was incorporated into a software product called Display Code Interface. DCI was codeveloped by Microsoft and Intel, and is bundled with Video for Windows 1.1D. Because of the circumstances of the code transfer from Canyon, we think Intel and Microsoft knew, or should have known, that they were getting pirated code. But we tried to use a cooperative, non-disruptive approach by filing our initial suit only against Canyon, and talking to Intel and Microsoft privately to get them to stop distributing our code.

They refused. Repeatedly.

You can read the whole thing here and find out more here.

The purpose was to speed up Video for Windows to match the speed of QuickTime on the PC. It's ancient history now, QuickTime lives on and Intel now has a good relationship with Apple. But the fact remains that there was line-for-line QuickTime code in a Microsoft product.

SJ should have done it. His enthusiastic "This is amazing" and "I really love this" and "This soooo cool" thrown in every other sentence always gets me jumping up and down and ordering anything he demos. But I already ordered so np :)

SJ at least should have popped in, maybe during iChat, SJ instead of the gal

Speaking of going back in time, when you restore a system with TM can you choose the date you want the restore to come from? So if you have a bad update (10.5.2, etc.) you can restore easily to 10.5.1?

It's amazing that people STILL think Windows has better features in anything. It's CRAP, UTTER CRAP, period.

That shadow copy thing has NOTHING to do with TM in terms of design, features and functionality. If you want good ol' backup, buy an extra HD and use that...if you want the next level, go for TM and its marvelous way of searching and finding individual files.

Leopard is just miles and miles ahead of any OS release so far...there is simply no way to compare it with the ridiculous Vista. Thank you, Apple.

And at no time Apple has never copied features from Microsoft? Where do you think Spotlight and Time Machine came from? Certainly not Apple. They just took Microsoft's concepts to market first and gave them a pretty GUI. And where do you think Spaces came from? It was taken straight from Unix-like OS such as Linux.
No need to pirate when you can just buy up the company that has the tech and add them the blob.

It's pretty sweet how Apple can "copy" a technology and get it out the door before MS can implement their own version. :p

It doesn't matter where the ideas come from ...it only matters what features you have and how well they are implemented. Apple excels in both of these areas. MS would probably be better off leaking all of their ideas out to the web so Apple can start designing them correctly to start with. Then MS can take notes and design with an Apple template :D

i have never said that
all im saying is that previous versions can restore a specific file (no, not contacts, just files) or folder

that shadow copy thing has NOTHING to do with TM in terms of design, features
"wow, a different look and it must be a completely different product!"
youre telling me a ford focus is completely different to a Bugatti veyron? they do the same thing, just in a slightly different manner
and yes, i know time machine is better, but the basic concept is still there

TM and its marvellous way of searching and finding individual files.
yes, time machine is better, but windows can do a bit of that

That's not a backup tool
no, its not but windows has this, previous versions and backup, as two separate programs
apple just has it in one

It's pretty sweet how Apple can "copy" a technology and get it out the door before MS can implement their own version.
Spotlight!!! :) Microsoft released msn desktop search, and start menu search in early betas of vista (both of which index, and let you search all files, like spotlight) before tiger and spotlight came along

i think quillz is right with:
Hmm, so you're just another Apple fanboy. Your precious company can do no wrong. And when they copy things from others, hey, that's great! It makes their products better. But how dare anyone copy from Apple!

im not defending windows and microsoft, i hate using vista since switching a month ago, but microsoft can do things before other companies without copying them

And here it is, folks, the biggest fanboy post I've ever seen on this board. I'm not even going to bother to refute your points, since you obviously are too dumb to understand the fact that Leopard, your beloved OS that you probably sleep with at night, isn't perfect. Apple knows this, why do you think they constantly pick on Windows and deliver a GUI that smacks of Vista? Whatever... Go back to your wonderful iWorld where things are perfect and simple and there is only one OS. But I think I'll stay in the real world where I'm a fan of OS X, but I understand that it's not perfect and owes a lot to Microsoft.

True, Apple let them make the mistakes and then do it correctly :p

And how many people downloaded MSN desktop search? Nobody that I knew of besides the MS trolls in my other Mac forums. Every Tiger user got spotlight, and it wasn't some bolted on feature. Also, Vista was supposed to take this idea to a new level with WinFS ...look how that turned out ;)

Um, no. I don't care that MS copies from Apple. ...and if "Happy Customer" == "Fanboy" ...then I guess that is what I am. I'm sure forums everywhere thank you for your amazing insight.

Sometimes I wonder if there is some company out there that hires people to put the word "Fanboy" into forums. If you can answer this question for me I'd love to sign up.

Narcissism ...it's what's for breakfast.
