That's all good and dandy, except Montevina was also released with a potential for upgrading from the X3100 graphics chipset to the X4500, a supposedly 3X performance improvement. Tell me ol' Stevie won't just opt for better integrated over trying to redesign the Macbook to accomodate a graphics card.
It'll probably be a better integrated graphics.

Intel said in 2007 that they would make integrated graphics 10x faster by 2010, so as time goes on there's even less reason to have dedicated graphics in the MacBook.

The standard MB is never going to get a standalone video card. It's a major differentiating feature and, ultimately, in the market segment targeted, not especially important.

I was rather surprised, however, that Apple didn't use the Black MB as a replacement for the (sorely missed) 12" PB by giving it a GPU (and other "MBP only" features).

Isn't it too cheap (inexpensive) for that role?

It is at its current pricing level. In the role of a 12" PB replacement, I expected it to be appropriately more expensive.
The black MacBook costs $100 more than an equivalently specced white MacBook. The extra $100 could be eliminated by offering a higher resolution screen or a dedicated graphics card.

Been there and done that...

After all these years of making laptops, excuse me, notebooks, they still have problems making plastic cases for them that don't crack after a few months. What about a MacBook case that lasts for more than 3 monts? I don't care much about the hardware on the inside except for the combo drive you still find in their $999 laptop

My wife has an iBook G3 800MHz that she inherited from me that dates back to late 2002. While it may have a scratch here and there, it has no cracks at all. And before you suspect that it has been used with kid gloves, it has been all over the world with me including the deserts of Israel. I kept it in a safe pocket in my backpack when it was not on the desk of my apartment there and again I say not one crack. For more recent experience, I have several friends in Grad school who use MacBooks of various ages and while I have not looked at each one up close, to my fairly well trained eye, there were no cracks. I know Apple has had a handful of cracking issues with a small number of machines but it is certainly not with all of them.

what's up w/ SSD? Will they drop it into new MB or MBPs? how much would they charge?

I could see it but the cost would be an arm and a leg until they come down more. I know they have dropped significantly but it's still really expensive so I wouldn't plan on seeing it in the MB.

Apple is not going to simply refresh a re-designed laptop. It will come at an event.

I wouldn't expect any refreshes tomorrow unless it was software related.

exactly it will come at an event. Apple events dont need to be in january or june or september. People say september is ipod month while that may be true things do change people and you need to understand that

But not this year.

July: MobileMe and iPhone 3G
August: MB/MBP ugdates
September: new iPods
October: mystery "new product"

This could be the biggest year in Apple history.

I know I was talking bout the guy who was complaning that apple doesnt do these things with out an event. I told him that apple events dont need to be in the months listed. things do change people.... some really need to get that through their thick heads

Forgive me for being on topic, but after reading approx 60 pages of threads on various MB rumours these are my conclusions:

Larger Trackpad w Multitouch? Pretty much a given, multi-touch computing is going to be big for Apple.
SSD: No chance...it would certainly come to the MBP's first.
Aluminum Case? Pretty likely....70% maybe.
Processors? 2.26GHZ (base MB), 2.4GHZ (mid/hi models) with 1066Mhz FSB (from 800mhz)...pretty much for sure.
LED Screen? A toss up.....but I hope so. If Apple is redesigning the MacBook for the next several years then you'd think they'd go this route.
Dedicated Graphics? Very remote.....MB is likely to get the upgraded integrated X4500 Intel graphics.
When? Sometime in the next 3 weeks seems the most likely... if we don't get it by mid-August then Apple will likely wait until after the Back to School deal ends Sept. 15th says me.

its probably almost imminent that the MBs will receive an aluminum case, or some kind of case change, as Apple has stated that they would like to stop using the plastic by the end of 2008.

and yet the iphone 3G has a plastic back..... go figure

and yet the iphone 3G has a plastic back..... go figure

but it's not the end of 2008 yet is it ;) i guess they are taking advantage of their own business promises haha, right down to the last product of 2008?

nope because this is the iphone month. trust me

we should see 3 new products at once from apple soon

Except that iphone month has turned out to be a disaster.

People unable to activate phones, bricked phones, crashing apps, bad battery performance, mobileme not working as advertised, mobileme servers down and lost service time, very rare apology emails from Apple. SJ must be climbing the walls.

Don't you think Apple would like to get new, stunning, and reliable product out the door ASAP to divert attention?

The MacBook Pro's design has stayed very similar for 5.5 years.

Its design is a derivative of the MacBook Pro's (except for the keyboard).

um and the plastic edging and magnetic latch which are in fact a big deal!

How about:
  • The MacBook Pro looking like a fat MacBook Air.
  • The MacBook drawing off the iMac with a black screen bezel and black bottom (like how the iMac's back is black).

I never realized you couldn't BTO the hard drive of the MacBook Pro.

but that's the point. you pay $500 more than the blackbook and don't get a 250 g hard drive as STANDARD!

  1. [*]The name
    Ridiculous reason!
    [*]Larger screen size
    Doesn't cost that much more!
    [*]Higher screen resolution
Kind of goes with a bigger screen now then doesn't it?
    [
    *]Faster processors
Will you really notice that tiny of a difference?
    [*]7200 RPM HD option
Optional! I'm talking about standard features!
    [*]**GRAPHICS CARD**
    I already made this point!
[*]More ports (although Firewire 800 may come to the MacBook)
    [*]ExpressCard slot
You just said that right there^^^^^^
    [*]Speakers
both have speakers, what's your point?
    [*]Backlit keyboard
    I made this point already!

Is that enough?
No, all those small things don't justify a difference of $500 to me.

Dear Apple,

Listen to Clayne.

thanks,
Me

Dear Apple, go ahead and make a Macbook that blows everyone's socks off, but please make the $500 we spend extra for a Macbook Pro worth it.
Thanks,
Misunderstood by macbook fanboys,

In all of that lets hope Intel can come up with non sucktastic graphics drivers for the X4500 for Apple (unless Apple rolls their own).

No. All screens from 17" to 22" are the same resolution.

Why? That's not the point.

The MacBook Pro's are better.

Then don't buy it, as has been previously stated.
