It would make no business sense whatsoever for a salesperson to tell you that there was the possibility of a new model coming out soon (especially not if you were on holiday...:)) because that would mean you are going to walk out of the store without buying anything. Whether they know or not - it's a really bad sales pitch!

Hell for all i care, they could paint a waffle pink, stuff it into a used bathroom slipper, sell it in a foil-covered cardboard box, call it the new and improved macbook and id still buy it just to relieve all this bloody tension and get this all over with....

I think it has more to do with Apple making everything thinner. So to make the MBP thicker is going backwards in those peoples eyes. I personally don't mind a little bit thicker notebook if it means that I can get more features or better cooling in the process.

I have said in the past, I would prefer a thinner MBP but if a MBP was built with the things you stated (more features/better cooling), I would take it in a damn heartbeat

It isn't THAT big a deal

It depends how much thicker it would be.

I have a Dell laptop given to me at work and my MBP is still considerably thinner than it so I could give it a good amount and still be happy

I don't want a damn lunchbox but I will take more features/cooling and sacrifice some space which I will get used to anyway

This will be my first real Mac ever. So I am still waiting because I am the kind of guy that will regret it if I don't wait. It's killing me in the process.

I am having a hard time sleeping at night. How about the rest of you that are waiting?

:)

Well, I haven't exactly got problems sleeping, but I recently got a new MacBook for my birthday, and I am concidering returning it to wait for the update. Only question is: how long will it take? I am not especially keen on waiting for one or two months for my mac!

Noone knows... could be days, weeks, months!

iMacmatician posted something interesting in another section that was a thought about the date. He said:
I thought of this a long time ago.

In 2006, the Mac Pro was released on August 7.
In 2007, the iMac was redesigned on August 7.
In 2008, the MacBook and MacBook Pro will be redesigned on August 5? I also think August 12 is another possibility, simply due to iPod event dates.

Those dates are also important because on August 7th of last year the Mac Mini was also updated. In 2006 the XServe and the Monitors were updated which makes me think (as well as iMacmatician that the update will most likely be on August 5th, it makes sense with past patterns but Apple doesn't always follow patterns I guess.

I'm one that is waiting as well. This will be my first mac, and I'm getting a high-end pro. I'm going into music, so that's why I'm finally making the switch; that and I've been working at Subway for 3 years in high school just to be able to afford a nice computer. I'm begging for early August, because I don't want it to get to crunch time, you know, when you're at school with no computer and the education deal is almost over... Curse you Apple! That's why we have a love/hate relationship.

How about 1.35" like the iBook? I have one and I don't complain about the thickness.

What? So they can screw over everyone who's distracted by the Olympics? Plus, it's not a Tuesday... :p

first of all zango, stop messing with our heads. UPDATES ARE ON TUESDAYS. do not take our only certainty from us. actually, it's ok, cause none of us have any idea what's going on. :D

however. anybody have any realistic predictions as to the performance increase going to montevina? i'm currently waiting, but if the performance increase isn't gonna be that major, i'd rather not take the risk of a rev a product, especially since i like the current macbook.

Dear Apple, go ahead and make a Macbook that blows everyone's socks off, but please make the $500 we spend extra for a Macbook Pro worth it.
Thanks,
Misunderstood by macbook fanboys,
TimeWaster

the only thing you are really paying extra for the dedicated graphics card, which for peopel like ME who use final cut pro or simialr graphics demanding software for thier jobs, but unless you need the dedicated grapics, you really shouldnt get the mbp and stick with a mb

My personal opinion is that we won't see a big performance boost from Montevina. The processor speeds won't improve much at all; the 3.06 GHz Extreme isn't going into a laptop because it's too expensive and the other Montevina Penryns are about the same as Santa Rosa. The front side bus speed bump will really only be effective with DDR3 memory, but again I think that is too expensive for a laptop.

The only big advantage I see to Montevina in the MB/MBP is that the power-optimized processors should result in noticeably longer battery life.

Jesus christ, slimmer?!?! The last thing we want is the ****ing MBP to get THINNER ---___--- By insisting it's 1" rather than 1.3" Apple already force us to make do with grossly underpowered GPUs, no blu ray, vast heat etc.

Any thinner and Apple should have to admit that they don't sell a high end portable.

thinner is what people are buying, its about portability, but that DOSENT mean we have to trade in for underpowered gpu's, i wound think they bring DOWN performace with there next macbook pro, computer companies dont just DOWNGRADE, it would be a stupid decision to make.

although i figure it would only be SLIGHTLY THINNER like the new imacs, iphones, and mbp's

After reading that Steve Jobs has taken this week off (AppleInsider), I find it hard to believe we'll be seeing the notebook update before mid-August.

you do KNOW that Jobs dosent run the company by himself, there are employees' like assistants, marketing departments, those nerds in the basement.

C-MON PPL HE'S NOT RUNNIG THE COMPANY FROM HIS HOME!!!!!

i just hate it when ppl automacticaly assume that steve jobs is directly responsible for everything that comes out of that company, HE JUST RUNNS IT. multi-touch MIGHT of been his idea but scientist workked hard to make it possible.

oh and and a week off for most people means, that they finnish most of thier work load and decided they can have a vacation. AND you must consider that he might of had expected/or unexpected health issues and HAD to take a week off

Last I checked, there was no 15.4" Macbook. Yes you pay extra for dedicated graphics, you are also paying more for a larger LCD screen with LED. The case is also slightly thinner and aluminum. MBP has an extra port that the MB doesn't have, FireWire 800. Can't forget about that ambient light sensing backlight keyboard either. :)
