Pb G5

Just a thought...

I read somewhere on this posting that someone was looking forward to PB G5s. But after just getting rid of my 12" PB G4 which was suffering from heat problems I'm not so sure a portable G5 is all that great. If people get third degree burns from the current PBs then what happens when you amp up the power even further?

If Apple finds a way to work out the heat issues I'll be all about the portable G5s but until then...

for the heck of it, I just checked MacMall's website. They are out of 15" PowerBooks. Didn't check the 17" but I'm sure they are out of that as well. Not often do I see Mac Mall not have a current model product in stock. Which points at updates.

There issnt any powerbooks left in Australia.

Damn.
(Sorry to be one of those annoying newbies, but how do you get your postings number to show up underneath your name? Thanks.)
Your "postings number" is "newbie" after you have posted certain number of comments it gets upgraded to 6502 I think and continues from there. Mudbug could probably enlighten you further since he is the siteadmin.

It gets updated from "newbie" to "member" then to "regular" (which is what I have and I have posted about 225 times).
And I don't think that is your "postings number." If I understand you correctly, that would mean that winmacguy has made 65816 posts, if you go into his profile he has made about 1,064 posts. I hear that is a number representing a processor that Apple has used at one point in history, and it is assigned to long time members (or something)...but I'm not sure.

Cool, thanks. I was trying to figure it out because it doesn't really explain that anywhere that I can find. I saw some that said "demi-Gods" and others that said "regular", but kinda confused how you get to be those. (Can you offer any help/explanations Mudbug?)

I was thinking of starting a thread for newbies titled "Crash course for newbies" so that I can get all my questions answered in one sitting to avoid embarrassing myself further (and maybe sparing others the humiliation who are also newbies).

I wonder what the number 6502 means anyway? Hope that doesn't mean I have to post 6,502 posts before I'm no longer a newbie. Yikes!!

EDIT:
Thanks for both of your help. And I just read your post EricNau after posting. It makes a lot more sense now. Just wish they explained that somewhere on the site. I wouldn't care so much except that I feel like I've been branded or something. Hehe.

Look at what I said, I think it will answer your question (it's right above yor last post). And if it's wrong, I'm just going off of what someone else told me. But I know for fact that at the beginning the order is newbie>member>regular

Thanks for that Eric, I had a rough idea but wasn't exactly sure. I see my number has also change from 6502 which it was for a while.

Id be interested to know what it takes to become a demi-god or moderator as well. I take it you would have to give some informed comments or advice and have thousands of posts, Nermal?

We all feel that way in the beginning...but before you know it, you'll reach 500 posts and get to set up an avatar (maybe someday I'll get one too :p) PS - never hesitate to ask questions - I just learned that there was a "quote" button - I had been doing everything by hand - I'm glad I asked. (but I should have sooner, like before I reached by 200th post!) I still feel like an idiot!

Crikey! I started using the "quote" button a while back. I just added my pic tonight as well :p after having it empty since I started posting here

Holy god, I can't even imagine such treachery.

As for the ensuing Powermac and PB updates I am extremely excited. I think we are going to see some really nice releases. Also, I had no idea about that new iMac display, that's quite sexalicious. Perhaps there are new monitors on the brink for apple.

Anyone know what time this thing is on?
I would guess 10:00 am Eastern Time. At least I hope so because that would be 10:00 pm in Taiwan (loooong business trip) and I can monitor the rumor sites in real time assuming there is a live feed.

If I remember correctly, when I first started posting here (and contributing) they used to give credit to the poster for the link to the article. That got changed a while back- might be a good thing it did  ;)

if your lucky! I tried monitoring Wednesday's (Thursday morning NZ time) announcement @work on a broadband connection ...no luck :(

Thanks again for your help on this. I hated to interrupt this thread, but just needed some answers. By the way is it okay if I add you guys to my macrumors buddy list? (what a cool feature!) I don't know anyone else on here yet.

And if anyone's interested I will be def starting a new thread "Crash Course for Newbies", but I'm too tired right now. 4:30 am my time! I'll post the link back in this thread once I get it started. It might even answer some questions for those who aren't newbies. Nite, nite.

What does my glass fork tell me?

Now lets se. There are some things we do know and some tings we dont know.

1) There will be new computers
2) There will be dualcore stuff ( so we know the PM will get an upgrade)
3) The iMac got a big and good upgrade, so for people thinking about an iMac or a PM now people will go for a iMac. There have to be something about the PM that will scream BUY ME. That will be Dualcore, and some other things. I think that Airport and BT will be standard. I also think that the RAM will be 1GB and the GPU will be much stronger and Dual dvi on all of them. But we do need a nother gismo on the PM.
4) The powerbook, most likly the last PPC powerbook update if everything goes like it should. So it have to be a update, but not that big. SJ have to blow people away when he uncovers the first PB on intel stuff. So the CPU will not get a big if anny update. Other stuff like the battery will get a big update, and mybe a webcam in the powerbook?
5) The unknown, I think there will be something new. Something that the rumor radar has not got there hands on. And for a change it is not about the iPod. That can be a lot of things, like new eMacs. New airport bases. Or somethings boring like BT mighty mouse, wireless iShight and other small stuff.

Dont worry mpqtpie, you will pick it up as you go. Also on Macbytes you dont actually "start" a thread as such, you post a link to an Apple related news article which Mudbug posts thus starting a new discussion thread relating to that article. I think the type of thread your talking about is located elsewhere on this site.
Its only 9.47pm Saturday night here :D

I have my fingers crossed for PM and Quadprocessor related :p

It's fun to predict!

My bets are for powermac:
dual/core 2.0 for € 1500
dual/core 2.5 for € 2000
dual dualcore 2.5 for € 3000

standard 1GB would be welcome too but somehow I doubt it, I think they'll not do that until the switch.

powerbooks are harder to predict but as a high profile media-event I somehow doubt they will not to a speed bump on the powerbook, that'd be just too embarassing for Steve :D

so it would have to be at least 1.8 GHz. But who knows, maybe even dualcore

Ouch, 3000 euros? From yesterday's close that would be US$3621. Are you including the dreaded VAT?

Actually, first you should see what options Apple offers with the [rumoured] new PowerBooks. They might have just the right drive for your needs.

Remember if you change the drive on a new system and something goes wrong the system with parts around the disk, Apple might refuse a warranty claim. And they could be right in doing so - it depends on what dies. Buy the best drive Apple offers on a BTO system and use that until you need a bigger internal drive.

See, I don't care. And anyway, I am going to let an authorized Apple dealer put the drive in.

And a fast hard drive really makes a hell of a difference. (The problem is that I am already down to 20 GB free space on my 100 GB drive, and I seem to add about 15 GB a year.)
