It's not that I don't trust them, it's that the event is less than 48 hours away an we don't know what the invitation looks like. As we saw in the previous two special event invitations, what was on them means a lot. ;)

Yeah. No pictures, but did you see the MacWorld UK information?

"The invitation is in black, and features a camera lens."

What I wonder about is if there is a form factor change in these updates, will that be the form factor we see with Intel Macs? I think it would make sense to get the new form factor out now and work the kinks out so the Intel Macs can hit the ground running.

And if they do change the form factor, just how sexy might that be? Could you imagine a gloss black pb?

I have to agree with you... it would make sense to see a form factor change to the Powerbooks now in this update tomorrow. The reason being that if they do the form change now instead of when we move to Intel, it would seem like less of a drastic move - i.e. New form factor, new cpu, etc etc, people will be less likely to move over to the new Intel Powerbook. So if they do the form factor change now, then it will be the same form when they move it over to Intel next year, then people will feel more comfortable with this... Does that make sense?

that would definately make sense to me, make the major changes now, and make it look slightly sexier when the intel ones get here (think iMac?). would be like a diversion from the real issue of whether they will be any good or not! :)

no....i trust big Steve really :)

Hi, Steve here

Just wanted to set things straight about tomorrow.

No PowerMac or PowerBook updates tomorrow.

It'll be iSight Pro - smaller form factor, built in H.264 decoding, 1024x768 resolution. Also available in Black.

That's it folks, thanks for coming. Anybody wants me I'll be in the bar.

SJ.

ps. Bill, if you're reading this you owe me 50 bucks.

I really hope Apple doesn't change the form factor...that would be bad - I can't imagine what form factor would be better than the current drool-worthy form factor.

what about something along the lines of the cinema displays, laid flat, detachable monitor ?

I'm concerned about the camera lens on the black invitation. Maybe this is just a software announcement. No hardware.

And I would hope to see HDMI on a Cinema Display sooner rather than later, just to make it future-proof.

I had exactly the same thought.....maybe it's just photo/software related.

Well if UK lead times are anything to go by...

All Powerbooks except 12" Combo & Super: 3 days
iBook 14": 5 days
All PowerMacs: 3 days

So going on these alone, updates are for:

15" Powerbook (Combo)
15" Powerbook (Super)
17" Powerbook
14" iBook
All Powermacs

I would be very happy with that - assuming the price is right and it also comes with groovy software like the .Mac. Black though, not sure about that.

I'm right there with you, with the fact that the Powerbook and even the iBook range are amongst the sexiest looking Laptops in the market, but I feel they are due for a form upgrade either now or when we move to Intel. But I think it could happen now because it will ease the perception of the transition.

I personally am very uncomfortable with the proposed transition and for me I think that this would help my perception of the switch... "Same Laptop only the CPU change - everything works beautifully still!"

Just my 2 pennies worth!

Folks,

The dual core G5s in this crop of PMs will not reach 3 GHz because of IBM's presentation several months ago showing that the top speed was 2.5 GHz. Unless something has changed (and I doubt it), we will NOT see 3GHz on Wednesday.
No biggie, dual dual 2.5GHz will do me fine!

But I'm with DavidCar on this. There have been too many "one more thing!"s that have just turned into "was that it?"s recently. I'm keeping my expectations low, so I can only be pleasantly surprised. :(

Right on, fellow Brazilian compatriot..! Whoever posted such prediction does not remember what IBM said back then...the dual-dualies are gonna top out at 2.5 GHz...

Hi my friend! Thanks for your support!
Uhu!! Brazilians rules!! (remember: we took out Orkut...) :D
Just kidding

Maybe a X800-might be a bit cooler (you'd need a PB based on the Clevo D900 design to fit a 7800GTX.)

Or stick an Apple Logo on a Dell XPS. That's as thin and light as you're going to get in a Desktop Replacement with a serious GPU.

More like 50 billion for that second rate knockoff called windows.

OMG! Another Apple event in November!!

Doesn't look too good though.... ;) ;) :D :p ;)

Freescale 7447A officially tops out at 1.42GHz. Yet Apple has 1.67Ghz 7447A's....

And only the Powerbooks go above this 1.42 GHz limit (iBooks, eMac and Mac mini all stay below it, even though they could probably easyly take the heat of a 1.5 GHz chip). I guess everything above 1.42 GHz was/is scarce and expensive. But this seems to change with the Mac mini now coming with 1.5 GHz as well.

My mini has a 7447B, and that doesn't even exist according to Freescale. I wouldn't worry too much what they say. Apple don't use overclocked chips.

I'd also say that there is headroom in the 0.13 micron Freescale chips yet, so even if Apple can't switch to 7448s we'll still see faster G4s.

Huh...I could've sworn it used to be powerbookg4...I'd even made a mental note of how odd that was...oh well, just going brain dead I guess.

Of course, that site doesn't list anything for /ipodshuffle/ nor /ipodnano/, nor anything from 2005 it seems.

From their FAQ: Why are there no recent archives in the Wayback Machine?

We do not add pages less than 6 months after they are collected, because of the time delayed donation from Alexa. Updates can take up to 12 months in some cases.

I wouldn't expect the nano or recent PB pages, but how old is the shuffle now?

In anycase I think you are correct anyway - I vaguely recall some rumors about a powerbookg5 page or image or something maybe 18 months ago.

sorry if i missed this somewhere, but does anyone know if we are going to be able to watch a webcast of this event as it happens?

or will it be like 1 more thing where we just wait for the apple store to update?

I doubt it, there hasn't been a live webcast of an Apple event for a long time. We might get a quicktime stream later in the day.

I remember thinking that about my Titanium PB when I bought it and with hindsight I can see I was very wrong indeed.

Ok, this is a reminder that things need to stay on topic here.....

Otherwise things might get messy.

The superdrive model has 80 gigabytes. Your theoretical model had 60 gigabyte and a superdrive, so that is why I tagged on "decrease in HD, for a superdrive model." :)

I just don't think Apple is going to go backwards, with a hard drive. 80 gigabytes should be the very minimum, for a professional notebook now.

I guess we'll see soon. :) Although, I'm not hopeful for anything below 15 inch being updated.
Ok fair enough, but think of my proposal as *adding* a SuperDrive to the base model, not as decreasing the HD from a higher model.

Me too; I can live happily with that.

But this is Apple we're talking about. Without great expectations, we would not be here with nearly 1000 posts on this topic. We want Apple to be superior, to have higher standards than the rest of the bland industry. I purchased a BMW for the same reason. Great expectations are a good thing as long as they are realistic.

ibook 14 discontinued?

what do you think that also the 14" ibook has an increased shipping time?

couldn't mean that 13" widescreen are on the way? or maybe that powerbooks will get new 7448 chips and 7447 will be the chip of the 15" ibook? (as the current powerbook but white!!)

nobody has really good hints in what will be the powerbook news (if Any), maybe also this means something..

-------------------------------------
iBook G3 600 Ati Rage 384Mb Ram, perfectly working with the latest Tiger.
Unfortunately not able to do screen spanning on ext monitor, but probably it is better otherwise my G3 would burn...

screen spanning is the main reason i Will change my sweet G3 ibook. sigh...

I do think that the PowerBook will go to Superdrives across the line, just three models with BTO options for the 15" for better GPU and Processor etc.

They really seem to be simplifying the lines at the moment so I don't see Combo drive equipped Macs being around for much longer. Once the PowerBooks go there's just the mini and the iBook left but I don't think they'll go all-superdrive till the others are Intel based to maintain the separation in the products - consumer-pro.
