Most of those thin laptops don't have an optical drive built in. And they have integrated graphics.

I'd rather a slightly thicker case holding everything in than plug in an external optical drive.

I disagree. I've seen several laptops much thinner and lighter than the Powerbook that have integrated optical drives... in fact, they are quite common. And their graphics capability are superior to what's in the Powerbook... integrated or not... shouldn't even matter since this isn't an Alienware laptop with upgradable graphics.

In fact, I can say for certain that my local CompUSA has at least 5 laptops in the 10.6"/13.3" size that are signifcantly smaller, have integrated optical, and superior graphics.

This is probably why Apple hired former Vaio engineers.... their laptops are awesome and the Powerbook would be a much better machine if they took some ideas from these guys.

"too big and clunky" ? What are you talking about ?
15'' and 17'' ARE widescreen and HD Monitors has nothing to do with form factor ?
I'm sorry, but I really don't know what you're talking about

They're just anxious about tomorrow's event. A thinner PowerBook? They must be kidding? Right?.... Right?
I don't think PowerBooks would come in any other color besides aluminum or black.
But you know, now that the iPods come in white and black, it's more likely to see white and black iBooks before we see a different color of PowerBooks, except that, as it's been for the past year or two, iBooks aren't supposed to be updated because they will catch up to the PowerBooks's specs.

That booth is right across from--and the same size as--Canon's. So I'm guessing it's more than just an asset managment system.
The mail stop given with that floorspace assignment points to Motion and Shake. So that's it, Apple have perfected the cheesy wedding photo CD! :p :D

If it exists i'm buying a 15 dual core G4 in powerbook.

Maybe then i can stop being obsessed and stop reading these damn rumor sites.

:)

Actually, I'd say the bulkiness :p of Apple laptops compared to SOME Windows laptops is nothing to do with any failings on the part of Apple's designers. But rather two factors:

1. Product families go in cycles, and different companies are at different parts of the cycle. The current PowerBook design is late in the cycle, while some other brands are at the start of a new cycle. That back-and-forth will always happen.

2. They have the Pentium M, and Apple doesn't. Yet....

All i have to say is that tomorrow can't come fast enough for two reasons:

1) I'm in the mood to by a new PowerMac

2) Work productivity has been going down the toilet with all these special announcements!!!

Come on dual dual powermacs!

I think Apple are going to release a digital camera tomorrow !!!

You mean like this?. Wow, it can hold up to 16 pictures and it's ONLY a pound light! I'm going to buy these as stocking stuffers at xmas!

Hoping New PB's are announced tomorrow. My Current PB is up on eBay now and the auction ends in 10 hours. It's currently at 1,100, but i'm sure it will skyrocket at the end of the auction. Just in time for Apple's Announcment Tomorrow

No, not kidding. Seriously, start looking at other laptops, 4.6lbs for the 12" is not tiny by today's standards. As I've said, there are several laptops much smaller than that at the local CompUSA.

Slim down the design? Um ... last time I checked the Powerbooks were 1" thick. Where do you suggest the "slimming" occur exactly? 17" is already widescreen. And colors? For professional computers? Do you work with preschoolers? No offense meant ... just curious.

No and I probably do more professional presentations than most on this list.
If someone is so transfixed on the laptop that they can't pay attention to the presentation, then they need to get some Ritalin. No offense to anyone with ADHD... I probably have it myself.

For God's sake I'm not proposing going back to the color toilet seat G3-iBooks. Re-read the original post, I'm talking about a USER CONFIGURABLE highlight... don't like it, turn it off.

Seems like a similar bias that all the vPod-haters had before it came out... don't like it, don't use it... where's the harm?

And to address another poster, the people I've spoken to that prefer some type of color rather than the BORING white and alum are not friends, they are colleauges. It's not that they dislike the PB, but those with small laptops have smaller ones that are black, or some other color, and those with larger laptops have better screen quality. So, unlike in 2003 when I had my first PB, no one is too impressed with the PB now... esp. the way it rocks on a flat surface because it's not level.

As far as the thickness and weight, like I said 2x before, go to the local CompUSA/BestBuy/whatever and see the new laptops. Ya, there are going to be bigger ones, but there most definitely are thinner, lighter laptops out there. Perhaps we've all become so enamoured with Apple's products that we've stopped looking at the latest and greatest from other companies??

Time for the announcement tomorrow?

Anyone know what time the event starts tomorrow?

It may have been mentioned somewhere in this thread, but I gave up around post 600 or so.. :)

Thanks

"Drool-worthy form factor"??? Maybe for 2003. Now these beasts are too big and clunky compared to other laptops on the market. Not to mention widescreen, HD monitors (that perhaps rotate to form a tablet) are sorely needed.
Yes, very drool-worthy. Just look at the latest offerings from Dell and Compaq/HP - with a comperable system, DVD burner, 1394b (some arent' even equipped with this), and a 15" monitor those things are nearly twice as thick as the PowerBook - and don't look half as sexy. Drool-worthy in 2005? Definately.

I also think it'd be cool to bring back the colors like the old G3-iBook toilet seats and G3-iMacs. But here's how I'd do it...

They should have a groove that goes around the outside of the cover and run fiber optic cable through it. Then a user should be able to go into preferences and set a color that would stay constant, pulsate, etc. Also, the Apple logo should light up to a color. Keep the aluminum style, just add color lighting that's user customizable. That would look awesome... not exactly useful, but it would certainly keep the Powerbook looking fresh and give it a one-up in cool factor over the competition.

Um...adding colored lights to inside/around the PowerBook would, like you said, remind people of iMacs - or at least *something* non-pro. It would be a bad move. The Media industry would not like it (I am assuming), I know I wouldn't

i just gave away my Quicktake 150 this year. ahhh the days of good digital cameras being the same quality as freebee cell phone cameras are now.

I wish Apple would release an airport express with video. I want to buy one of the ones they have now but the AV is coming out soon

heh, you'll just be able to read these damn rumor sites faster! ;)
i agree though. i'd really like to see the Freescale dual core G4 in the PB before it's EOL'd at WWDC. if they are for sale tomorrow i'll be at the Apple store online!

If and when new powerbooks, or powermacs do come out...
how many of you all are actually going to buy them? I know I can't afford one (I am a student) and yet here I am reading through all these post, esp. when nothing new is known... what happens to all of us? and why do I get so damn excited...?

I'm buying one - selling my existing 15" PowerBook. It's on eBay and already up to $1966 with 3 days to go!

i'd love to buy a new PB even though my current Al 15" is only two years old. :) if new PB's are available before Nov. then i'll be buying one and giving mine to my wife. if no PB updates occur, or at least not worthy ones, then i'll be buying my wife a nice iMac for Christmas. so either way Apple gets a sale and i get a shiny new Mac. ;)

I so hear you. I'm a student with a 12" 1.5GHz PB I bought in February and there's no way I'm getting another one; yet I simply cannot rest without refreshing this page (and others) every few minutes.

this powerbook stuff has gotten to my brain!

I'll buy a 15" PowerBook right after the announcement. It will be my first Mac and I'm very excited to make the switch.

I also will be buying one. I have a new Discover Card with 0% financing till June on transfer balances. I am planning on charging it and transfering it to the new card.

Like i said if it exists:
15-inch WUXGA 1440x900 resolution
1.7GHz Freescale MPC8641D (dual core)
1GB DDR2 SDRAM
100GB Hard Drive+
256 MB Video Card
Full size keyboard
10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet
Superdrive Dual Layer
FireWire 400/800
Analog audio in/out
Mini-DVI out

I've been waiting for 6 months for it :). Pretty sick of my 900MHz P3.

It was only mentioned once but i think a tablet feature would be pretty cool.
