I disagree. I've seen several laptops much thinner and lighter than the Powerbook that have integrated optical drives... in fact, they are quite common. And their graphics capability are superior to what's in the Powerbook... integrated or not... shouldn't even matter since this isn't an Alienware laptop with upgradable graphics.

In fact, I can say for certain that my local CompUSA has at least 5 laptops in the 10.6"/13.3" size that are signifcantly smaller, have integrated optical, and superior graphics.

This is probably why Apple hired former Vaio engineers.... their laptops are awesome and the Powerbook would be a much better machine if they took some ideas from these guys.
Their laptops are definitely not awesome, they are the worst computers I have ever owned.

Notice that they don't even give her title? Maybe she's just a scheduling flunky, but usually they list the person's division after their name at Apple.
JT

Googling the telephone number and the word 'Apple' indicates that she is a standard press contact person.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "small" conference room in the Javitz Center :p Seriously, I wouldn't worry about that too much. Besides, I'm skeptical of how AppleInsider's sources could even know what kind of room it's being held in. I would think that won't be revealed until tomorrow AM when press start showing up. But I could be totally wrong about that. Maybe it's widely known info.

Lessee, about 18 hours 30 minutes to go. *sigh* It's gonna be a long night.

There is no scheduled Apple event at the Javitz Center, then again it's a closed event. http://www.javitscenter.com/events/default.asp

Yeah, the place seems big enough for bigger upgrades :D :p

LOL, didn't even occur to me to go to that depth. My amusement stemmed from the fact that the Apple didn't outwardly state they were going to have a booth. When I originally registered back in Sept, I checked to see if they were going to be there. Would never have occurred to me that they would stay "cloaked" until the day of the event.

Next, the new iMac DOESN'T have a modem. Since I won't buy one it doesn't matter to me except....what if new PowerBooks, if they are indeed released, also don't have a modem either? I NEED a modem port still; and I don't want to have to pay extra for some USB substitute on something that should still be standard in a portable.

Stutz

To me portable solutions should always come with a modem.

Booth Size

Holy crap, I think Apple got the biggest booth there!!! Canon's looks tad bit smaller, but wow...there has gota be a good reason to have all that space. 3 New PB configs to show..along w/ 3 new PM configs..would explain the size, also enough room to store the boxes so that you can buy them on site!!! OH MAN!!! Credit card is awaiting... first time buyer!!! 12" or hopefully 13" here i come!

Actually, some bright-eyed observer over at AppleInsider (I think) made a nice observation.

Apple is *not* listed as an exhibitor/vendor at the PhotoExpo.

There is, however, a very large booth in the middle of the floor marked "Reserve" (#338, IIRC)..... and the contact address for "reserve" just happens to be:
1 INFINITE LOOP,CUPERTINO, CA 95014 .

Classic Apple to be that secretive. And I have a hard time believing that they would contract such a large booth at a Photo (not video, mind you) Expo, unless they had something cool to show off.

Looks like I'm going to check out the Expo after all.... ;)

JT
Note Booth size compared to Canon, Nikon, etc. It's the biggest exhibit area at the show. Note also it is reserved by Cupertino. :D

I think that this week there is only going to be a a camera, and some new software. Nest week I think there might be new machines. i think that apple just likes to mess with us, and as soon as we give up hope we suddenly get 'one more thing....'

Em....not to be offtopic (like that's an issue in a 1000+ post thread, right?), but why does BMW have a booth at MacExpo? I thought it was 330i, not i330...
:D
Let there be *true* iPod integration with iDrive, not some half-baked brain-dead scheme that makes the iPod one of your 6 CDs in the CD changer...

Give up hope? Never!! :D

A big exhibit at a Photography convention can only mean one thing... Apple has something more than just PowerMacs and PhotoPro up their sleeves. New laptops and desktops are nice, really nice for Apple users in general (a lot of which are photography people), but it isn't really "photo-specific". A PhotoPro type app which builds on iPhoto would also be nice, but still nothing really significant. the iSight camera could use a refresh, but its only a webcam. Nope, Apple's got somthing else lurking out there.

Of course, if all they do is release new PowerBooks tomorrow, I'd be about as happy as a guy could be who's about to lose $2K+. :p

Somebody mentioned an Apple digital camera. Although the market is totally crowded, maybe Apple has found a better way. It's very long longshot, but within the realm of possibility. If there's a camera lens on the invitation...

An iPod with a camera?

After that, add the telephone.

Who says the iPod is doomed?

If Apple is coming out with all of this new, great stuff, why did they do it this week? Apple knew that last week would take up all of the attention from the media, etc. and if they had better things up thier sleves they wouldn't have built up the hype for last week, it would all have been for this week, right?
At this point (after the release of the Nano, Video iPod, and new iMac) most people are just burnt out (except of course all of us reading this :p).

Different segments, different audience, different exposure.

Why does a presidential candidate tour the whole country, delivering a customized speech in every town and city visited? The candidate could just go on TV and deliver ONE message to the whole country.

Apple is holding separate events for separate segments, focusing on each one, telling them that they are uniquely important to Apple.

I can see your point, but I just think Apple's timing is a little off. Chances are half the people that were interested in the last event, aren't even going to know there's a second one, mostly because the media isn't going to bother to announce this event. I agree that Apple had to divide the events up, but maybe space them out with more than 1 week between the two.

PS - I think the president comparison didn't work well here. The president tours the whole country in hopes that by visiting each city, he makes everyone there feel "special," and in return those people vote for him.
With Apple, they are trying to capture the whole nation's attention, two weeks in a row, I just don't think it will work out that good - I may be wrong.

I just hope its something really amazing. The new iPod was nice, but nothing extraordinary. We all knew they could do it. Same thing with the Nano... Size is the only "great" thing about it, with nothing truly groundbreaking.

The ABC deal was a good start, but I'd have liked to see more shows than just 5, along with some kind of a subscription plan. I'd really have liked it if, for an additional fee with Directv or someone, you got free downloads of the shows you could have TiVoed anyway.

Sounds good! Would the announce more shows/Movies for iTunes at an event that is suposed to be "pro"? I doubt it (even though I wish they would).

Wow...1100!

Cross Post from Price Rumor...

Oh yeah. please, please, please.

Actually even the "half-baked" implementation would be nice in all the models. The E39 does not have it nor the new E60.
