Holy Crap! I said the other day that steve would hold another event this wednesday! I've been getting all these predictions right lately. Intel PowerBooks on the horizon?? Has to be somewhat big for a press event.

This announcement interests me greatly. I've been planning on ordering a laptop this month. Right now, I'm leaning towards a 12" iBook, but if they improve the PB enough, I may decide to get that instead.

It will be interesting to see what is upgraded. It's a "pro" even, which means about half of their product line: PowerMac, PowerBook, Xserve, Xserve RAID, and the high-end software titles (FinalCut, DVD Studio, Logic, Shake, and Motion.)

The rumor mill (for whatever that's worth) is saying two things:
  • Dual-core PowerMacs.
  • Updated PowerBooks - higher resolution screens, bigger hard drives, no speed increases.
Both seem plausible. I put higher stock in the latter than the former. Apple has already accidentally let slip the higher resolution screen in an owner's manual typo, and larger laptop drives can be purchased right now. (120G drives from Toshiba and 160 G drives from Seagate.)

I'm pretty sure that I heard that Dual cores are more efficient than two single core processors.

yeah, i heard that as well. but we talk about 5% or so. certain tasks profit even from the independent cpu's.

in any case the single dual cores should be much cheaper to produce. so if they show single dual cores they have to be much cheaper (unless the throw in a lot of extras like 1GB ram, faster GPU's).

but a tiny speed bump from using single dual cores won't justify a press event.

No. He meant what he wrote. The event is at 4God's home. Let's all show up on Wednesday. Be sure to bring your own refreshments.

And your debit/credit cards............... :D

i'm hoping that the powermac update with the ol' dual processor dual core deal will be going ahead. ordering (come what may) a new one next friday, so hopes are high.

just hope the dual 2.0 is a dual dual 2.0

you can always hope but i'm sure the 2.0 will prob be a dual core only, not dual processor to. :(

PMs are a given.
This means either good PBs or none at all though. Apple would not intro 'bumped spec' 7447A PBs at a special event.

Unless the event is more about new PowerMacs (two dual-core CPUs) and the PowerBooks are bumped in specs because they can't do better for now (they're not switching to intel for the fun of it, and PowerBooks are the main reason for that, which means don't get your hopes too high for the PBs).

Cool

It's Dual Core Power Macs. Bumped Powerbooks may be presented as "Powerbook HD", or silent. Photo Pro (iPhoto with VERY precise control of importing and organizing with perfect integration with outside editors seems very likely as well).

My biggest question is: Front Row? If so, on which configs? My speculation:

A new and improved iSight debuts built-in IR sensor is bundled with the Power Macs and 15"+ Powerbooks so you can use Front Row. The iSight is slightly different, now a rounded rectanglular prism rather than a tube. The iSight is also sold seperatly for older computers and includes PhotoBooth, but NOT Front Row due to the high hardware requirments and Apple being able to make you want a new Mac more.

Or perhaps the Powerbooks will get the iSight built-in?

I have a feeling that "the innovation" would be a pro version of iphoto along with some sort of gadget related to digital photography.

One photo gadget I'd like to see get some attention is the Camera Connector for the iPod. If only Apple would get the bugs worked out of it and partner with Canon, Nikon and the rest to get real support on the camera's side. I mean, if they got BMW to install an iPod audio cable in their cars, why can't they throw a bone to the professional photographer? Now that the iPod supports video, why not allow users to watch video clips taken with digital cameras?

Apple gave the mainstream what they wanted, now everyone can stop whining about their lack of hardware support. About that Pro Photo thing, Tiger has all the filters built into it, I don't see why Apple wouldn't make something to use them all (kinda like Image Tricks).

Yay! iTunes 7 on the 19th!

iMac G5 became slim... Maybe this could mean a real chance to see a Low Voltage G5 in the PowerBooks...

iMacs didn't become that slim, not only are they 50% thicker than a PowerBook, they are taller and wider too.

And I'm sure they use a whole lot more power too.

Seriously. At some point, the press is going to get bored with all these "special events."

Not true. Apple is on the verge of changing everything and we can all sense it. Granted, next week is just some hardware upgrades, but last weeks announcement was the beginning of a completly new paradigm in media delivery. I'm talking about no more music industry, no more cable companies, no more TV broadcast stations, video rental services, ect. Apple is going to own it all!! The whole paradigm of consuming media is changing and Apple is leading the way. So, everytime Apple says they have something to announce everyone will come running to hear all about it. They are the rising star, the next "big" thing, -- insert metaphor here.

Everything is changing before our eyes. Think about it. Why watch your favorite TV shows on television with commercials when you can just download it and watch it commercial free? The implications of this are staggaring. Media companies like Disney are going to be able to sell directly to the consumer, no more middle man (cable, satalite, tv) and Apple is going to provide the technology to make it happen with their computers and web services software (iTunes). Apple is going to offer viewing on demand and your computer is the key to controlling it and delivering it to you (digital hub). That means you can watch what you want, when you want, and they way you want. Apple will give you the freedom, the control, and the simplicity to make it happen.

So, next weeks announcement is just one more piece of the puzzle and we will all tune in for it. It may just be some computer upgrades, but you never know. Maybe they will have...just one more thing.

photos

I'll say this ... the fact that it's coming on the eve of this photo expo makes me wonder if there's something photo related, of course.

Few thoughts ...

1. Apple would be crazy to take on Photoshop -- which is about to release version 10. Apple and Adobe have a great relationship and to mess it up would be foolhearted.

2. I have said and said and said since the innovation of iPhoto and wifi -- connect them! Apple should release an Apple-branded wifi picture frame. White or black with a silver apple logo and the ability to hang the frame on the wall and see changing photo shows, etc. And, with iPhoto, make pictures updatable anywhere -- like anyone can type in a .mac address to see a slideshow? Let grandma in Florida type in an address and see the grandkids photos on her frame.

How cool would that be? That was my idea years and years ago. What an innovation it would be!

The press will get bored when you stop reading the articles, when the buzz about Apple products dies, and not a minute sooner. I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I am going to that PhotoPlus Expo thing and there will be an Apple booth. I hope I get to play with their latest toys. :D

Yeah, I was a little bummed to see that after Stevezy's cool CoreImage presentation before the debut of Tiger that there's really no way to harness this power in an app. Hopefully this Pro Photo app is for real, and will incorporate them.

It'd be very nice if they lowered the prices of their Cinema Displays. I've been wanted the 20-inch model for a while now, but don't feel like spending $699 edu on it. $599 edu, now that's different. :) Maybe they'll have the iSight built-in? That'd be so awesome... but I highly doubt it. I hope the Power Mac get something especially extra and exlcusive like the iMac did. I don't mean dual-core CPUs I'm talking about something unique to the Power Mac externally. Who knows with Apple, it could be anything! :D

Remember, this is a pro-oriented event.

Doubtful, Front Row is absolutely a consumer app.

Doubtful, but slightly less so. iSight may be nice to business video conferencing, but it's really a consumer device.

Or perhaps the Powerbooks will get the iSight built-in?

I thought about this after the iMac was updated, but it seems highly unlikely right now. Even if they get it shallow enough to fit in the thin lid and small enough to fit in the bezel around the screen, think about every time you shut the lid. Maybe they could have some sort of protective cover come automatically down, but otherwise the lens will certainly get all scratched up.

My guess is that size is the main reason why this can't happen now. Unless they go with a cheaper quality, smaller lens like you might find in a cheap camera phone?

I read, here I think, that dual cores would be 60-70% faster than 2 separate processors of the same speed.

I'll admit that would be cool, but I really don't value it highly enough to make any sacrifices for it. I don't want the bezel around the PowerBook display to get any thicker nor do I don't want the PowerBook itself to get any thicker. Plus, if they did put it at the top of the bezel, then wouldn't it be scratching against the palm rest everytime I close the lid?

I'm looking for better screens on the PowerBooks, dual-layer SuperDrive, better graphics, and possibly faster RAM.
