They could have put my mother in the add, she is 80, never user used a computer before 70 and all she does is email, web browsing and some simple games. She is the demographic for an iPad. On the other side this commercial was misleading because it represents peoples that clearly have much greater computing needs.

I love my Ipads. But they are not laptops, they are not full computers, no matter how more powerful the CPUs are, the iPads OS is just not a computer OS. No real windows, no real productivity software due to app store, which is not an "applications store". No easy file manager, no easy way to organize thousannds of files and folders. Sorry, it is not designed to be a computer replacement. The M1 iPad is just overkill for that simplistic OS. And I Love my ipads and my iMac and my MacBooks. Is just that Ipad OS is so lacking to be seriously considered as productivity computer. For some things is ok, buT
Mostly just for consumption. Even no calculator default app! ;) IMHO, after using Ipads since the 1st one.
Spot on. Regardless how Apple would like to think.

That's a pretty good come-back! 🤓 I have owned a few iPads, and I tried the 2020 - 12.9, but it was too lackluster for my taste. I was surprised that many software titles were still formatted for the iPhone and wouldn't even work on the iPad. I also wrongly assumed that the OS had matured enough that written text conversion type text would be universal throughout the OS and apps. Maybe iOS 15 for the iPad will allow for more functionality, but I doubt it.
And I think some of the blame falls on developers for not making apps available or not properly optimizing them for the iPad.

To Apple, "your next computer is not a computer," but every time I see a perfectly photographed and styled iPad with keyboard and additional costly accessories, I don't see a computer, or an iPad or an Apple .... I see a Microsoft Surface, which can do all the things and positions and this and that as the iPad with Expensive Add-Ons, etc etc etc

And no, I'm not a Microsoft Fan Boi, I'm just pointing out the lack of originality in Apple's product lineup for the past 6-7 years.

P.S. I'm still waiting for an physical, printed, hardcover book with all the nice typographic touches one finds on occasion, to be produced entirely on an iPad and not a MacBook Pro.

I don't think it is spot on. As mentioned earlier, the iPad is a computer for many people. For others with a heavy need due to apps and the ability to control files come to and from the iPad, it isn't the right computer for them. Just because the iPad doesn't fit the needs of some here, that doesn't negate the fact that the iPad is a computer.

I wonder how many millions of people have bought an iPad in the past only for it to be eventually left in some drawer unused, sold, or outright given away? I bet the abandonment of iPads rules the roost for Apple products

Yeah. It’s a bit of a misstep that one.

Fact is that iPad is a bit of a hard sell at the higher price points. Capabilities aren’t substantially higher than the base models so the Air and the Pros are basically just luxury devices. Apple doesn't know how to market them and this ad shows that.

I'm curious what you think Apple should do to better market them? Do you think they have target sales goals for the higher price points and are just flummoxed on why they aren't being met? Or could it be that maybe they send out high spec items just to sell to people who want to have the "best" of something regardless of if they need them? Or maybe they through them out there to see what someone might do with it that they haven't thought of? Or most likely, they use the concept of "anchoring" to make the lower priced iPads seem more reasonable because they are in the middle.

I agree totally, but if I were someone who knows little about technology (like most) I would see things like the generic “gamer guy” and not think twice about gaming being different on an iPad. Same for the ethernet cords, probably just think “oh wow they don’t even have WiFi.” - if I’m even aware of what an ethernet cord is.

It is a BS ad, but it works for the target market of everyday user. Though, frankly, I think that target market is changing as younger generations are much more tech savvy. Apple needs to keep in mind the average is no longer clueless person struggling to plug in an HDMI cable.

The younger generations are changing but they are getting much less tolerant for BS things we have learned to put up with just to get the technology to work at all. They have high expectations of absolute convenience, and as soon as you introduce some friction, they're on to the easier alternative. Sure, they're no longer clueless, but if you hold up an HDMI cable and start asking them to figure it out, they look over at Apple's wireless extended desktop between devices and say "Nope, not dealing with that cable nonsense. Just give me the Apple stuff instead."

If you’re a gamer, forget about iPad. If you use your pc lightly, however, get an iPad. Overall very well done.

Apple don't need gamers to give up their gaming PCs in exchange for Apple hardware. They'll be okay if the gamers just bought an iPad too.

Bingo! I don't understand why some believe everyone else's needs must be like their needs. That's very myopic and self-centered.
The price of the iPad Pro is far too high for being just a consumerist device. Its price is comparable to a computer but iPad OS sucks.

I think that this is the biggest thing that people on these kinds of tech forums need to recognize. Some other people need to calm down, this is an ad to people who don’t need 4, 4K monitors and two dedicated GPUs, just an easy to use device that can browse the web, read slack, read emails, and maybe do some light gaming.

Spot on!

Some people get so triggered if Apple promotes a device, like a tablet for example, that doesn't meet their needs, but beautifully fulfills the needs of millions of other people who are not self-proclaimed hardcore tech enthusiasts.

It's like their manhood is being challenged. And that instantly causes them to get a major case of the shakes.

Every time I use my iPad vs my MBP I think of how much slower it is to work on the iPad. Sure you can think of the iPad Pro as a computer, but shy of touch screen editing, I think the majority of us greatly prefer using something like a 13.3" M1 MacBook Air with the latest MacOS. Just my opinion. ;)

I mean really, what BS. A clear 'gamer guy' type setup suggesting an iPad can replace that. General office people who would not be using Macs anyway will not be able to use just an iPad. All the sheep will be along to laud it but really is a BS ad.
Proof positive that haters will say anything. It is true that there are uses for which the iPad is not well suited. But truth, most people are completely fine with an iPad. It does everything they need very well. So ad is targeted at the most people, the others already know a tablet is not right for them, hence the add is not targeted to them. Seriously I don’t understand why this simple fact upsets the haters so

Well at least they didn’t have a kid in the tree. ;)
I hope Apple has their CCLI License up to date. You don’t want to mess with Disney.

Agree, I have an iPad 4. I bought it thinking I could do a bunch of stuff with it but I was shocked it was such a dumb machine. Even, today's iPad have all that power but as you mentioned before... it still a dumbed version of an OS.

This commercial is totally unrealistic.
Do you want productivity or do you want a clean desktop?
Besides... NOBODY works outside under the sun like that, it is the worst environment... it is noisy and distracting as hell. Nothing better than an office environment in which... no one cares about cables.

And please don't pollute public spaces with the noise from your games or video conferences.

last couple years they stop calling if a computer. Now it’s called a computer 😂

Regardless of if that is true or not, most people do NOT need a "productivity computer".

I replaced my mother's Window's laptop with an iPad and she's never been happier.
It's actually easier now for her to do video conferencing, banking, manage her bills, check her email, etc.

With my computer, I've got multiple apps open and multiple windows for each and I'm jumping around those with ease.

I totally see that usage, with my iPad, I'm usually using it for more of a linear use, I'm doing one thing for a while in one app and (generally) not hopping around. Even if I use my iPad for work, for example, I'm going to be a participant in that Zoom meeting, I'm not going to host (I'd want my MacBook for that).

What nonsense is this?

With all the gaming, streaming, video editing, photo editing, music-making that young people are doing today, they are absolutely more tech-savvy than the previous generation.

The notion that they won't be able to operate an HDMI cable is just laughably out of touch.

I think most people know that. What some people fail to realize, is others' computing needs aren't as demanding as their own. Or as demanding for tech people who hang out on tech forums, which is not Apple's largest customer demographic.

For many, a portable tablet with basic web browsing, email, messages, note-taking, light sketching/drawing, writing, etc is ideal.

There's a reason Apple dominates the tablet market, both in number of units sold and revenue. It's about understanding not everyone is into tech and many only need a great tablet with a great/responsive display for their casual needs. And... that some people who are into tech and have multiple regular computers, sometimes just want to *consume* with a tablet.
Perfectly said..!

I'm a Software Engineering Manager at Lockheed Martin, and when I come home from work, the new ipad pro 12.9" is my computer. Who's to say it isn't? :)

I too prefer using my Mac most of the time. There are times when my iPad is better suited for the job at hand. It is still a computer regardless of how much or how little one may use it. The iPad isn't for everyone but, it is still a computer.

Um no the ad is misleading. That’s the issue. So many people will not know the limitations of iPadOS, buy the iPad based on thinking they can replace their 10 year old laptop computer, and then be disappointed for wasting their money.
