Does this completely hard-brick the device? So not even DFU mode works to reflash iOS?

good thing I chose to skip straight into 18 and not 17.7. I mean logically speaking who doesn't anyways?

My former M4 iPad Pro (running 17.6.1) was at 80% charge and plugged in during the iPadOS 18 upgrade attempt that took it to an early grave.
Did you see any sign that something interrupted the install? I ask because the article said the problem related to something interrupting the install though it didn't give details of what that really meant.

FWIW my iPad M4 13" upgraded no problems. I played some games on it too. I was plugged in around ~55% but not plugged into to anything super high powered. Just my Macbook USB C port.

Why do people always rush to update? I’ll wait a month or two at least - some of yoh enjoy being Tim’s Guinea pig… I mean Beta testers!! :)
When you go year after year with no problems it can make a person feel pretty confident. Clearly now and then you get burned.

Great start!
This year I'm especially glad I'm waiting for the .1 release, before updating my systems.

Just re-read. I did update 17.7 on iPhone before iOS 18 and I did plan do that on iPad but decided to go straight to iOS 18 instead. Lucky.
I updated with 17.7 before 18 and fortunately no problems with mine. My 11" M4 iPad Pro has been stellar in performance and has a great screen. I would hate to have to take my chances on a new one. Also installed 17.7 before 18 on my Mini 12 with no issues. Right now I'm feeling lucky and plan not to install new updates right away in the future. All my devices have been updated and are working fine.

Updated my iPhone 14 yesterday to 17.7 then later that evening to 18. No glitches whatsoever.

Updated my iPad Air 13in. to 17.7 yesterday as well, but not 18 yet. The problem now reported is on M4 iPad Pros and no mention of other models. But maybe I’ll still hold off updating my iPad Air to 18 for a bit.

I highly doubt anyone here could answer that. Give Apple a call. Talk to an engineer and get the answer to your question.
They'll likely just re-release it once they have the issue resolved. It looks like they had to re-release iPadOS 17.6.1 (at least according to Wikipedia) for some reason (release August 7, 2024, re-release August 19, 2024).

I had it sitting next to me but I was working on my laptop. I saw it updating normally with the Apple logo and the progress bar. Eventually I looked at it again, the screen was dark, it was unresponsive and nothing I tried could bring it back.

In my experience yes (I'm a long time Apple user, no stranger to DFU mode, followed Apple's documentation... etc). I tried getting it into DFU mode many times, I also plugged it into my MacBook Pro to see if it would show up in System Information under USB devices, it wouldn't. I hooked it up to a backup battery and it would very briefly seem to draw power before quickly stopping (battery turned on automatically for ~30 seconds and then automatically turned back off again).

Fortunately I took advantage of AppleCare Express Replacement before this happened to everyone else and they got back-logged on inventory.

Imagine many here leaping to that conclusion, even though it's not true
If apple doesn't want people to jump to that conclusion, then they should explain why it happened when they find out and not be so secretive about it. I doubt that this info could be used to exploit users or jailbreak devices.

I’m not going to bother with this until Apple Intelligence rolls around. The current OS does everything I need. No complaints.

Same here and mine is fine too. I wonder why they released both 17.7 and 18.0 at the same time?
There was a security update that Apple wanted everyone to have - even those not updating to iOS 18 right away. For the past few OS’s, Apple has been providing security updates to the outgoing OS - both for people whose devices can’t take the new OS and for those waiting for bugs to be worked out in the new OS.

Guess I got lucky. Updated first thing yesterday morning when I woke up, then it was a full day of lessons as usual and my iPad worked flawlessly throughout.

Tough luck to those whose iPads did get impacted, and hope Apple resolves it soon.

Apple stopped signing the iPadOS 18 update for the M4 iPad Pro models, which means the new software is no longer available to be downloaded and installed at the current time.

The update appears to have been pulled following complaints from some iPad Pro owners, who found that the update bricked their devices.

There are reports on Reddit from iPad Pro users who had an interruption in the installation process, leading to an iPad that refused to turn on. A total replacement was required for affected users.

Not all M4 iPad Pro owners have had an issue installing the update, and it could be linked to installing the new iOS 17.7 update before installing iOS 18. Apple will make the software available again when the underlying problem has been addressed.
