Well i am definitely not updating any of my devices to IOS/IPAD OS 18 (Especially my iPad Pro M4 11”) until IOS 18.1 at least after seeing these issues.
Yes.You pay for an extra warranty in case the manufacturer themselves bricks your device?
🤔
Did you see any sign that something interrupted the install? I ask because the article said the problem related to something interrupting the install though it didn't give details of what that really meant. My former M4 iPad Pro (running 17.6.1) was at 80% charge and plugged in during the iPadOS 18 upgrade attempt that took it to an early grave.
When you go year after year with no problems it can make a person feel pretty confident. Clearly now and then you get burned. Why do people always rush to update? I’ll wait a month or two at least - some of yoh enjoy being Tim’s Guinea pig… I mean Beta testers!!![]()
It will...just not until 18.2.Apple Intelligence should have predicted this.
It usually doesn't hurt and if it does, Apple will replace it for you.Why do people always rush to update? I’ll wait a month or two at least - some of yoh enjoy being Tim’s Guinea pig… I mean Beta testers!!![]()
I updated with 17.7 before 18 and fortunately no problems with mine. My 11" M4 iPad Pro has been stellar in performance and has a great screen. I would hate to have to take my chances on a new one. Also installed 17.7 before 18 on my Mini 12 with no issues. Right now I'm feeling lucky and plan not to install new updates right away in the future. All my devices have been updated and are working fine.Just re-read. I did update 17.7 on iPhone before iOS 18 and I did plan do that on iPad but decided to go straight to iOS 18 instead. Lucky.
They'll likely just re-release it once they have the issue resolved. It looks like they had to re-release iPadOS 17.6.1 (at least according to Wikipedia) for some reason (release August 7, 2024, re-release August 19, 2024).I highly doubt anyone here could answer that. Give Apple a call. Talk to an engineer and get the answer to your question.
I had it sitting next to me but I was working on my laptop. I saw it updating normally with the Apple logo and the progress bar. Eventually I looked at it again, the screen was dark, it was unresponsive and nothing I tried could bring it back.Did you see any sign that something interrupted the install? I ask because the article said the problem related to something interrupting the install though it didn't give details of what that really meant.
In my experience yes (I'm a long time Apple user, no stranger to DFU mode, followed Apple's documentation... etc). I tried getting it into DFU mode many times, I also plugged it into my MacBook Pro to see if it would show up in System Information under USB devices, it wouldn't. I hooked it up to a backup battery and it would very briefly seem to draw power before quickly stopping (battery turned on automatically for ~30 seconds and then automatically turned back off again).Does this completely hard-brick the device? So not even DFU mode works to reflash iOS?
If apple doesn't want people to jump to that conclusion, then they should explain why it happened when they find out and not be so secretive about it. I doubt that this info could be used to exploit users or jailbreak devices.Imagine many here leaping to that conclusion, even though it's not true
There was a security update that Apple wanted everyone to have - even those not updating to iOS 18 right away. For the past few OS’s, Apple has been providing security updates to the outgoing OS - both for people whose devices can’t take the new OS and for those waiting for bugs to be worked out in the new OS.Same here and mine is fine too. I wonder why they released both 17.7 and 18.0 at the same time?
Since likely there are more comments in this thread than bricked iPads thanks for the chuckleImagine not testing on your flagship devices 😂
Apple: “Introducing, our thinnest brick ever”
Apple stopped signing the iPadOS 18 update for the M4 iPad Pro models, which means the new software is no longer available to be downloaded and installed at the current time.

The update appears to have been pulled following complaints from some iPad Pro owners, who found that the update bricked their devices.
There are reports on Reddit from iPad Pro users who had an interruption in the installation process, leading to an iPad that refused to turn on. A total replacement was required for affected users.
Not all M4 iPad Pro owners have had an issue installing the update, and it could be linked to installing the new iOS 17.7 update before installing iOS 18. Apple will make the software available again when the underlying problem has been addressed.
