I'm glad I didn't update my 11" M4.
I'm waiting for the delivery of my iPhone 16 PM on Friday to make the switch to iOS/iPadOS 18 at once...

If apple doesn't want people to jump to that conclusion, then they should explain why it happened when they find out and not be so secretive about it. I doubt that this info could be used to exploit users or jailbreak devices.

I didn't read anything stating Apple doesn't want people to jump to that conclusion. Perhaps you have a link?

No doubt they they'll let people know when they find out what the issue is. In the mean time they pulled the update - which is the right thing to do.

No reason to jump to the conclusion, unless you're part of the Apple conspiracy crowd actually believing Apple doesn't test their updates with their products. If you are, please post a link where Apple doesn't test their updates with their products.

Interesting. I upgraded my M4 11" iPad Pro with no issues.
Glad someone posted this.
I would be disappointed if someone didn’t blame everyone else.
Must be the victims’ fault since you’re fine.
Pro tip - THIS DOESN’T HELP.

Yikes. I’m glad my M4 installed correctly.

Funny thing is, one of my Intel MBP's bricked. But I was able to bring it back alive by doing some random stuff (I have no idea what thing I did that made it came back alive).

So I don't think this is related to iPadOS 18 only.

I don’t think he was saying that since it worked for him, that it must not be an issue. But it is another data point that it’s not a universal M4 problem.

Hmm, how strange. My 13" M4 Pro updated totally fine with zero issues. Guess I got lucky then. Had no issues on any of my stuff.

Spot-on! At the moment it seems it only happens under a certain set of circumstances. With detailed feedback from customers I'm sure Apple will determine the circumstances, fix the problem, and release another update.

I wonder why only M4 models.
Anyway, glad Apple is responding. I hope they make restitutions for those affected. I once had a two year old iPhone (out of warranty) bricked by an OTA update and was out of luck. Actually, M4 devices should still be under warranty so Apple would have to replace them.

I’m also glad the article is using the word “brick” correctly here—ie. “unfixable, all options exhausted, making the device permanently equal to a brick”. It seems most times people use it to mean “malfunctioning”, which is far more often a temporary situation, which is obviously not at all the same thing. I didn’t know what the title meant by “brick” until I read the article. So it’s kind of too late, “brick” has already become a useless word. Not sure if we can go back. We may just need to start preceding it with “permanently” when applicable.

Completely illogical and absurd. Apple is obviously incompetent for not determining and advertising the issue within 10 seconds of first hearing about it. Have you ever programmed and tried to track down a bug that appeared. I have and it can be very challenging and time consuming. You guys just don't think things through before posting your erroneous conclusions. What is wrong with the mentation of so many posters here?

I just personally will feel upset if they reinvent the wheel and make us all download a 6 gig update that went fine because a small faction of people had their update go wrong

AI going to be delayed some more.workers at apple aren't going to have crash logs to examine to figure this out, they are going to have to spend time to figure this out. Things get delayed one day at a time.
