Guess I got lucky. Updated first thing yesterday morning when I woke up, then it was a full day of lessons as usual and my iPad worked flawlessly throughout.

Tough luck to those whose iPads did get impacted, and hope Apple resolves it soon.
My updates were flawless too, but I would be steaming if this happened to me.

not if you have automatic updates on, which I do not want to turn off
If they re-release it as the same IOS 18.0, it probably will not show us as an option if you already successfully updated. That’s what happened to me a few months ago when they re-released a IOS 17 version update. I had already updated and when I read the headline that it had been re-released, I did not see it as an option to update.

My brand new M4 iPad Pro 12.9 did not get bricked when I updated. But Apple did tell me after the iOS update that my display is an "Unknown part" that is not recognized... ugh.

Completely illogical and absurd. Apple is obviously incompetent for not determining and advertising the issue within 10 seconds of first hearing about it. Have you ever programmed and tried to track down a bug that appeared. I have and it can be very challenging and time consuming. You guys just don't think things through before posting your erroneous conclusions. What is wrong with the mentation of so many posters here?
Apple hasn't restored the update, so obviously they haven't figured out the problem, but when they do restore the update, I'm betting no apology or explanation will be given. I never said they should explain it NOW. "You're updating it wrong"

This is why I hold back a couple of days on my Mac and iPhone for a few days just in case.

Ironically I did update my M4 11" iPad Pro just to check it out and it worked ok.

The reality is they rushed iOS 18 and macOS 15. I'm not sure why they felt the need to release with so many outstanding issues, but it seems like this is just the trend in software now, sadly - no real QA, let the end user "test it in prod." Regardless, it's not a great look for a company that's main selling point is controlling the hardware and software.

How did they rush it? Same beta cycle as always. I have been using iPad and iPhone beta for a while now and never had any issues. One of the smoothest beta runs I have experienced.

What happened was …. the AI chip on the M4 saw that it had to deal with Siri in iPadOS 18 and decided that this is not going to happen.

There are a lot of outstanding issues for Enterprise

I just personally will feel upset if they reinvent the wheel and make us all download a 6 gig update that went fine because a small faction of people had their update go wrong
Hoping the 18.1 doesn’t brick my 18.0 updated M4 ipad Pro. 18.0 iOS is working fine so far. I guess I should just wait and leave well enough alone.

I was wondering what the hell happened to my 13" M4 yesterday when I tried updating it to ios 18. It just turned off and I had to turn it back on. Thankfully it turned on and finished the update. I got lucky as mine turned back on and others didn't.

Well automatic iPadOS installs should always be turned off; but I did install iPadOS successfully and set security response and system files to ON for automatically installs and iPadOS automatic installs to off. I keep downloads on and then you wait a few days so you can see if the update is a dud or not especially for situations like this.

Does Apple replace your bricked device in this case, without any costs even if the device is past Warranty and no Apple Care?
This is a public release and not Beta.

M4 iPads were released in May 2024. So each and every single one of them should be in warranty. I don’t know if other models like SE2020 are affected.
