I don’t think he was saying that since it worked for him, that it must not be an issue. But it is another data point that it’s not a universal M4 problem.
Again, explain how "it's not a problem for me - mine is fine" helps determine why it bricked others' devices.
If you don't have the issue, and you post "mine is all well" ... doesn't help.

I wonder why only M4 models.
Anyway, glad Apple is responding. I hope they make restitutions for those affected. I once had a two year old iPhone (out of warranty) bricked by an OTA update and was out of luck. Actually, M4 devices should still be under warranty so Apple would have to replace them.
It's a QA thing in the kernel, but oddly only impacting 17.7 (which I have - and there were two releases of 17.7) to 18.
Why only M4 models? Shall I reference Crowdstrike...

but the 17.7 RC and actual releases have the same build number

My family members bought an iPad M4 updated iOS 18 with no problems. I wonder how many owners have nonapple-sanction apps that can cause this problem.

I never, ever upgrade new releases. I won't get 18 until they come out with the 18.1 Apple Intelligence, and even then I'll probably wait for the 1st revision.

Why is this banner still advising people to brick their devices?

Imagine not testing on your flagship devices 😂
I doubt many Apple employees use their iPads for serious productivity especially considering they can probably have any system they want for free or substantial discount. How many "power users" are using an iPad for such intensive tasks that upgrading an M2 iPad pro to an M4 iPad Pro is even worth the time it takes to set up the new device?

Pretty neat that Apple can filter out specific devices from their update mechanism… Is this a new capability? (Wouldn’t they previously have had to pull the update for all models until they had a revised version?)

For the record, I was able to update my iPad Pro M4 13” with no problem, apparently a few minutes before they pulled out the release. I skipped 17.7 and went straight for 18.

I feel like I dodged a bullet. I’m not going to be so lucky next time, better be careful.

Because the majority of people are upgrading fine.

the battery on my ipad m4 is draining like it just ran a marathon. 100 to 30 in a couple of hours, just sitting idle.

Today I got my new iPad Pro M4 11" delivered. Now I can't transfer my old to my new iPad because of the iPadOS 18 can't be verified to install... I didn't had the choice of iPadOS17.7. So setting up my new iPad isn't possible at all at this moment... Unless I do it all manually, but hey that's not my normal iPad experience ;) So I guess I'll have to wait....

My brand new M4 iPad Pro 12.9 did not get bricked when I updated. But Apple did tell me after the iOS update that my display is an "Unknown part" that is not recognized... ugh.
My 13 inch M4 did this also with first release or two of the 18.0 beta (went away). Never did this with the beta series of 18.1 however and I am on beta 4 of 18.1
