So.. my friend set this up for himself and now that it's deleted, my phone sends messages via SMS just fine, but trying to use iMessage on the Mac keeps defaulting to iMessage rather than SMS. anyone know how to reset this on my side?
It’s not a your side issue. His phone number was registered with iMessage, so that’s what he’ll get until it’s unregistered.

I’m ok with shutting down an app that intentionally spoofs iMessage servers into thinking they are iPhone users. Seems to have potential to harm actual iPhone users. I suspect/hope Apple will quickly take what they’ve learned from this app and make iMessage severs more secure.
They do not spoof anything. Everyone can register a AppleID from any device

With this ID, since it’s a legitimate AppleID, you can authenticate yourself with Apple and use their publicly available services via their APIs from any iPhone, iPad, MacBook or with any Webbrowser.
Nothing nefarious… nothing illegal.
Currently you still won’t be able to access iMessage from a browser on your PC or from Android devices because they doesn’t know how to use the iCloud or iMessage APIs.
So the only problem are the proprietary Apple APIs. Beeper used reengineering to explore the APIs and developed an Android iMessage client.

The ONLY reason Apple put a stop to this is that iMessage is without a doubt the biggest lock-in for most iPhone users. How many family / friend / work group chats would be ruined if even one person deviated. That's real social pressure to not rock the boat right there. Apple could charge money for outside iMessage if they wanted and people would pay for it but it would be nothing compared to potential loss of iPhone owners. It probably was a lot of trouble to shut this down but Apple threw some real resources at this and got it done because that's how worried they were.

I dont feel bullied I just want to sync my iMessages to an android phone lol.

You thinking it's just about social status and not ordinary utility is the real teller
lol no i am literally repeating what macrumors users have been complaining about for weeks.
"think about the children. they are bullied"

Corporate law is not my expertise but i am pretty sure there is some law where they likely should not be profiting off of Apple's codes/services by charging $2
If that's the case, you would think Apple would have submitted a lawsuit against this unlawful use of iMessage. Reverse engineering for interoperability purpose is not illegal. At the same time, Apple is also within its rights to stop the service.

I don’t think against the law. But at the same time, you are hitching off someone else’s infrastructure, so you can’t really blame anyone when it does break, because it was never yours in the first place.

does apple do this? he says he removed it today - does apple go through and reset/purge their rolls regularly?

LOL why do people think iMessage is the reason why we use iPhone? I am genuinely interested. I have a galaxy and everytime i switch to Galaxy i dont go "oh my god, i miss iMessage. I gotta switch back."

I switch back because Android is terrible lol.

We are not locked in. We simply dont want android. I'd use a windows phone again before i ever use android full time
It’s the features that come with it. Not bubbles themselves. Though I know there’s still a lot of bubble colour prejudice in our world.
LOL i am sorry but everytime i read a grown adult (i am assuming most people in this thread at least 21 and up) saying anything about a bubble prejudice i just laugh.

I mean no harm but if you are an adult feeling bullied over a color of a text message, plz seek therapy because your self worth should not be tied to a color.
If you find yourself not getting dates because of your phone, then choose better partners.

the features that come with? We are getting RCS. Android does not need iMessage other than to feel special lol see the above

Yeah, well, I don’t think it’s childish to not want to see prices for Apple services go up because Apple is expected to support companies freeloading off their servers.

If Apple lets this slide, a precedent is set. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry will be making iMessage clones, and every Android user in the world will be hammering Apple servers. That’s a massive cost that will get passed on to actual Apple customers. Hope you like paying $4.99 a month for Messages+.
I would actually pay Apple a monthly subscription on my Android devices for iMessage and FaceTime. I prefer Android over iOS, so having iMessage and FaceTime would be worth it to me if Apple releases them.

I think the servers poll it periodically.

1. Both of you delete the threads that contain imessage.
2. go to your settings and turn off iMessage
3. Start a new conversation to him
4. it SHOULD be a normal SMS/Green message.
5. Turn iMessage back on
6. You should both be good after that.

Remember: dont use knock-off apps <3

Are you unaware that unauthorized access to a computer system is illegal? Seems like common knowledge to me.

They hacked private servers in order to make money off of Apple’s storage and bandwidth.
Lawful reverse engineering for interoperability purpose is not illegal. At the same time, Apple is also within its rights to stop the service.

So we should pay higher because you are willing to pay a subscription all because you prefer Android over IOS.
yeah i'll pass on that.

I completely disagree. Many comments here read like the commenters have won some sort of personal victory.
Not a personal victory it is actually hilarious though. The man literally bragged about how it was IMPOSSIBLE, IMPOSSIBLE HE TOLD YOU for Apple to block it without breaking iMessage for iphones.

3 days later....

In the words of Maury Povich
"The lie detector detemrined that was in fact a boldface lie..."

There are also billions of Android users who can't stand iPhone like I am. But we also like to have high quality images and videos when texting with iPhone users. I am glad that Apple is bringing RCS because of regulatory pressure and not because Apple is being generous to non-iPhone users.

For me, yes. It's not that difficult to understand that there are people who truly prefer Android (Samsung) over iPhone.

Maybe locally on your own device. But that doesn’t apply to fraudulently accessing a computer network to steal bandwidth, processing and storage.

He can unregister it manually from Apple's website. It's pretty straightforward and immediate.
