One more price drop and the 30" will look very tempting. And the new G5s can handle two 30" screens now.

That would just be ridiculous though.

I was REALLY hoping the 20-inch model would drop to $699, but oh well. I guess it's time to finally buy one. :D Or maybe I should go for the 23-inch with edu discount...

I think either way you'll probably be pretty happy. ;)

Yep, pleasant dreams indeed. :p ;) There is no way Apple would update the display line now, especially not after just doing a price drop like this. I think we'll have to wait until 2006 to see any new displays.

yep. im looking at the dell displays. thinking of making my own aluminum bezels. :)

btw - tell me about the edu discount do i actually have to be enrolled in a scholl for it or can i be an alumni ? :)

The Dell's ae very nice displays as well.

As for the discount, I believe you have to be enrolled. Anyone know otherwise?

Kinda out there but anyone think they might drop again around first three months of the year? I heard LCD and plasma screen makers are gonna have a massive price war in the closing year.

Which I guess is now... :p

I say let the wars begin, and let the consumer reap the spoils. I am hoping that i am able to find a full time job after i graduate in December and furthermore that i get my own place and that i'm not at home. So low price LCD's or Plasma's would mean i could deck out my new pad.

Even if i was making 6 figures i would not buy one of these things, especially not when you can get high def lcd's for TV so much cheaper. I know they are not the same quality, and that not my issue. But $2500 for some reason that just seems ridiculous IMO.

The 20-inch display is too much. It's should $599. Oh, but I know why they won't price it that low...because then it and the Mac mini would undercut the iMac...

The 20" SHOULD be $599. Pairing a $599 20" with a Mac mini wouldn't hurt the iMac at all.

Reason #1: Strip the iMac of its display and it just blows the Mac mini out of the water in processor power. No questions asked. A 1.25 GHz G4 is to the Minor Leagues as the 1.9GHz G5 is to the Major Leagues.

Reason #2: iMac has A LOT more added features that are standard to it compared to the Mac mini.
-Keyboard & Mouse included
-Wirless built in
-iSight built in
-160-500 GB HD
-2.5 GB RAM Maximum

After looking at all of Apple's updated current offerings, I think the 17" 1.9GHz iMac G5 (iSight) for $1299 is the best value Mac out of all of them.

Just don't make it like Dell's AIO concept along the same lines.

Sushi

AIO...Oh..all in one....didn't know they have such a beast..or is it had?

Eh...I trust that if Apple did such a device it would have enough panache and design flare that it would “just work”.

spray paint or duct tape.... :D

Seriously though. I've mentioned this ad nauseum over the last day but get the 2405...when a discount is around. You won't be sorry. I love this monitor. *hugs his monitor in portrait mode*

Yeah, the 23 inch with edu discount is only $1099; Much more affordable than before. Might have to splurge...

You have to accepted to, or currently taking classes to qualify. The sales policy from Apple's Education Store states:

ELIGIBILITY
Those eligible to purchase from the Apple Store for Education Individuals include faculty, staff and students as follows:

K12 - Any employee of a public or private K-12 institution in the United States is eligible. In addition, school board members who are currently serving as elected or appointed members are eligible. PTA or PTO executives currently serving as elected or appointed officers are eligible.

Higher Education - Faculty and staff of Higher Education institutions; and students attending, or accepted into a Higher Education institution are eligible to purchase. Purchases from the Apple Store for Education Individuals are not for institutional purchase or resale.

Thought so - thanks for the confirmation. Makes sense though - otherwise, a LOT more people would be eligible for the edu discount if alumni were included. ;)

Will I get any money back?

Ok, this update is great and all, but it kinda sucks if you're in my situation. I'm a college student, so not that much income at the moment. I worked all summer in hopes of affording the 30 incher. Friday two weeks ago, I went to the Apple store and bought it. It felt pretty good. Until today, 5 days after my 2 week return period, when I find out that it has dropped $500. Do I just have to take the hit or is there anything I can do? I haven't bought a dual-link card yet (yea I've been running it at low res), and the x800xt is $350 online. The plan was to sell my dual 2.5, which I got at 20% off, not lose to much on the sale, and buy an updated mac which would already have the dual link card as standard. This would have worked out beautifully with the price drop on the displays (I would be able to afford a quad 2.5). So back to my question: am I just out of luck?

Unfortunately, if it's outside of that 2-week return period, I fear you might be. :(

I would try going to your local campus computer store and buying whatever you want straight from them, they generally don't ask about student status from what I can tell (I am a student)... at least it's worth a shot... or you could just buy some kid a 12 pack....

I was expecting those Cinema Displays to have a larger price reduction :(
Its getting close to what it should be worth but still not there, especially the 23".

I just got a Dell 2405 the other day, but I'm not pissed.
I got it for a great price and will probably upgrade to the Apple 30" when they get the next price bump.

Now add a 15.2" widesceeen 1280x854 Apple display--CHEAP--for Mac Minis and call it a day :) Could be 17", but for the sake of the Mini, CHEAP is more important. After all, some people still buy 1024x768 displays.

Some one-stop solution must replace the eMac....

Agreed and thought the same thing when I saw new PBs and noticed 20" hadn't moved. So how about the new display out of a 15" PB. Nice hi res bright little number for the Mac mini? Makes a lot of sense to me, and the only drawback is small text, but at least you'd only be using the thing close up.

I would love to get a Apple-display. I love the way they look. But the Dell's are simply better. Yes, Apple-displays have Firewire and USB. But Dells have USB (and more of them) which is more widely used. And they have 9-in-1 card-reader (in 24"), something Apple lacks. And what about the inputs? Apple has one DVI-connection. People like me with more than one computer, but just one display, are screwed. Dell has DVI, Analog, S-Video, Composite and Component. So the Dell clearly outspecs the Apple. What about the prices (in Finland)?

Apple 20": 838e
Dell 20": 568e

Apple 23": 1429e
Dell 24": 1163e

So, what benefit do I get with the extra money the Apple costs? Well, it's made from aluminium, but that's not so important when displays are concerned.

I'm sorry Apple. I would love to have one of your displays. But with these specs (everything else is just nice to have extra- but I need more inputs) and these prices, getting a Dell is a no-brainer.

You're kidding, right?

The LCD panels (even if used by Dell on their 20"er), are the best damn LCD panels in the industry "apperance wise", even if they don't please you as a spec whore.

My 3 year old 22"er, while "faded and old", still has an arguably WAY better picture than your run of the mill assy LCD.

I think 20-incher is a bit expensive...

Good price drop for the 30 though ($500  )

Oh by the way what resolution Apple's 22 inch LCD had?

Pixels

Hey this might be dumb question but is it actually possible to have a better resolution on the 30inch screen?? As in does anyone manufacture screens that large with the depth resolution of the new Powerbooks?? I've seen the 30inches in person but... I think the pixels are waaaay to big. But that might just be me...

great idea. I just might sign up for a night class before i purchase, too.
:D

It'd be okay if the Apple displays had more inputs, the extra cost over the Dell could be attributed to having decent style. However, whilst they look very nice, the Apple displays aren't good value for money (well, maybe the 30" is, but I haven't looked at prices in that area).

The 20" is overpriced at $799 / £550. A $100 drop wouldn't have made it a good price, but it would have made the choice between it and other 20" widescreen displays slightly more difficult. £950 for the 23" is a scary amount, but the entire market place is still in the progression from 17-20" displays to 20-24" displays - once the transition is more complete prices will drop to reasonable levels.

I'll stick with my 19" display for now - it's nearly two years old and still works really well. Maybe in a couple of years time I'll decide I need (rather than /want/) something better - maybe 26" Cinema Displays will be the new midrange and cost $1299, 23" will be the lower-midrange and cost $899 and 20" will be the low-range and cost $499.

i just got me self a quad 2.5 power mac with a 23" HD apple display

i only paid £695 for the displaY! with thier new reduction and education discount...

i dont think thats TOO bad,.. considering im going to be watching tv on it as well,.. it will be used all the time as i wont havve another tv just using this...

One more price drop on the 30" and I might begin to seriously think of buying one. I think I'll wait for 3 more price drops before I buy one though.
