So iPad Pro gets two size, 11 and 12.9", Normal iPad gets 10.5" and something to replace iPad mini? 8.9"?
No idea what you’re talking about. I guess you’re just making stuff up?

1) iPad Pro already has those two sizes.

2) the budget iPad is rumored to be getting a slightly larger screen (9.7 —> 10.2), presumably from a bezel shrink. My guess is the physical size stays the same.

3) iPad mini 5—at 7.9” the same size as minis 1,2,3 and 4—was released 4 months ago. You won’t see an update for 3 or 4 years.

Sheer confusion is expected if you're going to drag in 4 years of iPad models. :p A regular customer is simply going to go to Best Buy, Walmart, or the Apple Store and look at what they actually have.

Apple is currently selling:
iPad Mini 5
iPad 9.7 2018
iPad Air 3
iPad Pro 11
iPad Pro 12.9

Doesn't seem confusing... 2 Pro models, 2 non-Pro, and a Mini (primarily for vertical markets).

If the 10.2 iPad is a reality, it will most likely replace the 9.7 2018.

I expect the Air 3 to be discontinued some time in 2020. (it is nothing more than a way to clear out an excess of 10.5 Pro parts)

I've been saying that the iPad Pros will go to 6GB RAM (not just the 1TB models) this Oct/Nov.

If the 6Gb option is offered in current models, and nothing else changes (no new CPU) - how would they market that (since Apple never talks of RAM on iPads and that’s likely not going to change)? If it is going to be a silent refresh, than I don’t think that makes sense for them (because, how would people know that this is a new version with more RAM).

I believe the only way for iPad Pros to get more RAM on all configurations (not just 1Tb) is alongside new CPU. And, perhaps, this is the plan - new A13X iPad Pros with 6Gb. If it’s just A12X, I doubt we’ll see anything new. In that case, I think these 5 models are not Pros at all.

What would you add that is useful and not gimmicky ? Software is where ipad is improving

Considering that less than a year ago we had the new iPad Pros with Liquid Retina, FaceTime, symmetrical bezels, the new pen that charge magnetically and the all-in-one folio/keyboard (since I bought one I don't have a computer for home use anymore) I would just take the comment as trolling or being very uninformed.

iPad hardware is great already, and the OS is getting there quickly. Now we need real Pro apps for it! Where's Logic Pro for iPad OS?! Personally, that's what will get me again into iPad.

The 10.2" iPad was already covered in the previous batch of registrations in January 2019. The 5 new registrations today are likely to be iPad Pro.

Yeap, agree with that.
A13 CPUs and hopefully reinforced chassis like they did with the Plus iPhones, I doubt they’ll have OLED screens though but you never know? I’d expect them to be the same as the current models otherwise.

I still find the current 11” Pro a stunning piece of hardware design.

Honest answer. I don't know what else there is to add to iPads, but the product line just seems stagnant. I have the 11" iPad Pro and it's good but don't you want a killer feature on it that'll make it great? What features would you like to see on the iPad?

How would you exactly define the difference between good and great? Should it make you breakfast? Double as a sex toy? I have the 11" pro too, and now I only use a MacBook Pro at work, it has effectively become my personal* (at home, when I am around, when I travel) computer.

* I know it's called "Pro" but I am not in a field where I could work on a tablet, I am a UX designer, at least one 27-30'' display is mandatory for my job, and at that point it makes more sense to use a computer anyway. Still, I absolutely don't want my work computer to communicate with my personal iPad, but otherwise for reading/writing research, writing docs, making decks and presentation, sketching, in person and remote meeting and many other tasks I would prefer to use it than my work MBP.

So many models! Maybe a little consolidation is in order. Love my 2018 iPad Air!
Well, five models does seem like a lot, but they all serve a purpose. There’s really no way to consolidate the 7.9” mini or the 12.9” Pro, without just discontinuing one or both. In the middle Apple has similar/sized models:

Good: iPad, $329, 9.7” (update to be 10.2?)
Better: iPad Air, $499, 10.5”
Best: iPad Pro, $799, 11.0”

The budget model at $299/329 isn’t going anywhere, and it’s not going up-market. Again, I don’t see any way of consolidating except to discontinue either the Air or the Pro. I’d hate to see them discontinue the Air, and they’re not likely to discontinue the 11.0” Pro, as the 12.9” is just too big for many. So I’m really not sure how to bring five models down to three or four without leaving a hole in the current lineup

What else do you want them to do?

Probably economy of scale. According to last few quarterly reports iPad have started selling again, so they are able to trickle down more rapidly technologies and formats from higher end machines. The "new" 10.5" iPad will probably be very similar to the old 10.5" iPad Pro in format and look, and they will probably use the same slimmer bezels format in the "cheap" iPad.

You have to consider that these are very different models as far as the users are concerned, the cheap iPad is a $329 machine, the Air is a $500 machine, very different people buy one or the other. Just baseless speculation on my part, but I think the "cheap" iPad is bought mostly by price sensitive users that just "want a tablet", emerging market users and the many industries that use iPads (restaurants, shops, etc.). The iPad Air I see it more as the iPad the classic Apple user buys, the people that don't mind spending $500 for a tablet even if in the market there are similar sized Android tablets at half the price (not sure about that I don't know anything about Android tablets, but there probably are).

In any case, at that level of dimensions, 0.5" makes quite a big difference in the user experience, so if they can give 10.2" instead than 9.7" to the most price sensitive users they would be dumb if they didn't.

But it looks like the 10.2 will replace the 9.7 so it's not going to add up. The "new" 10.5 iPad...I think its one of those classic cases where not all rumour information are correct (shocker) and it's just the next Air revision. If they are at the point that they can use the slimmer bezels format from non-Face ID Pros in the cheaper models, they will obviously use the same format for the Air, so same screen size, smaller footprint, "new" model but not really new, simply updated form factor for iPad Air.

Too many versions of iPads with little differences. I feel like we’re going pre-Jobs Apple with so many models that confused consumers.

Perhaps they are educational and/or business focused models? Admittedly I don't know what that would be mean exactly since the 2018 iPad was aimed at those markets and still seems to cover it well, but there could be a feature or two that Apple doesn't want to wait to release (USB-C? RAM? I doubt just screen size) although exactly what I can only speculate. I don't work in education or enterprise, I just know Apple has released targeted models for those markets many times in the past. Often they are available to the public but not always.

Man, Apple is just changing up the ipads like crazy the last few years... what was wrong with the 9.7" being the low cost version? now you will have 10.2", then 10.5" air, 11" pro?

Way too much confusion of what's what.
My hunch is that it's to get people buying more iPads. I think the size increase has a psychological effect, causing us to think that it's a bigger upgrade than it really is (no pun intended). That being said, the bezels of the 9.7 iPads do look a little humongous (contradictory adjectives intended).

Too many different ipads. You shouldn’t have to look at a comparison chart to figure out what is what.

Keep it simple.

iPad Pro (two sizes)/iPad (one size, same as smaller pro)/iPad mini (one size)

All should support Pencil 2.

Upgrading the iPad 6 right now seems pointless, seeing how it can run everything just fine and has bigger profit margins. Apple should focus on the iPad Pro and maybe merge the iPad and iPad Air next year.

Trying to figure out what they can add the iPad Pro line other than a faster cpu. 99% apps can't take advantage of the existing CPUs netherless a faster one.
The main question in my mind is how iPadOS factors into the equation. Especially with some of the multitasking updates (multiple instances of one app, etc)-- maybe that's more of a RAM issue than anything. I know a simple processor and RAM bump isn't that sexy, but it does keep the device fresh in the eyes people who are buying for productivity-- and the more attractive Apple can make the iPad for productivity, the more they can sell. The more sophisticated iPadOS gets, the more we can benefit from these already powerful A-series chips.

Geez, because we don’t have enough models already?
Adding another size is just going to add to the confusion. Just pick 2 sizes and be done.

This is a bit of a tangent, but if screen real estate is your primary hangup (I know it's not *that* simple-- I'm just thinking forward to what the iPad Pro could become)-- out of curiosity, what happens if they beef up the GPU in a future chip (A13x, A14x, etc) to be able to drive a 27" 5K dispaly or a 32" 6k display? Apple just needs to make a new retina display that's not a $5-7k XDR for the rest of us ;)

(I'm a graphic designer and I'm curious how much I could shift to an iPad Pro if I put in the time to learn and use different apps and a different interface.)

If it could also double as a portable stroopwaffel maker in combination with the folio case, that would be a killer feature...I know I would buy one then, for sure.
