the best OS is purely subjective based on what you use it for. care to compare 3dmarks? yeah didnt think so.

besides, ill build a better rig than an iMac myself, and cheaper. like i always say, i cannot stand delusional mac fans. apple has great designs and a great OS, but people act like there is nothing that can compare, its just assinine. ill use a mac for some things and a pc for others. people who stick to one side so tenaciously just end up on the short end of the stick, or only need it for some of the things pc's enable you to do in whole.

It's going to be tough to build a machine with the same parts at or near the same price. Impossible? No. More trouble than it's worth? Yes.

It's native resolution exceeds 1080p, so I would say yes.
But does the film industry give permission to display HD content (Blueray or HD-DVD) on the new iMac?

Have to say the 24" looks like a pretty sweet machine. Really nice display, good specs. Very good price.

And what's this?? A video upgrade option? And what's this???? Apple charging a reasonable amount for a RAM upgrade? Wow.

Now if they only made it in color other than white. There's a reason tv's and movie theater walls aren't white...

Even so, I wouldn't mind owning one. But since I already have a couple of external monitors, the last thing I need is a built-in one.

As a long time fan of ATI, is NVIDIA that much better? I've got an ATI x1600 256mb in my MBP and it's pretty good for handling just about anything I throw at it.

I notice that the 17" iMac has the ATI, but the 24" has the NVIDIA.

Well the thing is I'm coming from the PC side of things. That's where the basis of my knowledge lies. And from everything I've read recently, the NVIDIA chips seem to have better image quality with the current drivers (however this is under Windows of course, I don't know how the OS X drivers fare). I also happen to prefer the SLI solution of NVIDIA's to the Crossfire of ATI's, but again this is in the PC world.

Mainly, it's the fact that they upgraded the line, but kept the same old video card in the 20" model. I would have at least liked to have seen the 7300 make it in like the 24". I don't know if it was a design decision because of space and heat, but either way I personally would prefer an NVIDIA chip. I'm not a computer gamer (I play Half-Life 2 and HL2: Deathmatch on Windows, but that's it), but it never hurts to have a nicer component in a machine that you can't just go out to the store and buy a new part for.

Either way, I'm sure the 256mb X1600 will do me just fine.

Wednesday is the next Tuesday...but one does wonder why Apple let this out before Tuesday. It would have been a nice item to add to the buzz. That they released it a week early suggests to me they have some "exciting new stuff" ;)

I am sure they won't release anything "strictly computer-like" on the 12th...iMacs today were already an oddity to pave the way for next week...

We're just gonna revamped iPods, the iTMS Movie Store and, just maybe, the Airport Express streaming stuff, along with the Nano wireless sharing device, as shown below...

Wow!!! I definitely did not see this coming on a Wednesday. I'm heading to Apple's site right now to check it all out. Go, Apple!

And $999? Holy...

Edit: Haha, I'm just laughing with excitement over here. I love Apple! :D I'm probably not getting one, but this is so sweet. I definitely can't wait to try it out in an Apple Store.
December for me because right now I can't afford a 20" now.

Damn. As soon as Apple can add in a bluray player without raising the price about $2000 or so, I will get one of these iMacs. Hopefully that won't be for about two years or so.

With the Apple store going down yesterday, I can't help but think the release was a day late. Perhaps there was a problem?
They always take the store down the day/night before releasing new product.

For every iMac, the education discount is all $100 the same which I think is not reasonable.
And iMac is not part of nano promo now.

This will be my first ever Mac desktop (I own a 900mhz G3 14.1" that came with Jaguar and I never use it). This new system will be replacing my current desktop and I'm pretty damn excited. My current PC sounds like I live on an aircraft carrier with fighter jets. Now hopefully I can sell my PC and use the money to get a new iPod (current one HD just went bad a month ago) if they release updated models at this media event on the 12th. Woo!

Congratulations on your new imac purchase! I'm envious. I hope to have a C2D MBP soon too (I'm a broken record), but that new 24" imac has certainly tempted me.

Thanks Apple. Since the 12" Rev D PowerBook of Feb 2005 I have not realistically wanted another Mac. I can't pick which one to get, they're all financially possible. 17" would be a nice size and very good price, 20" looks the most possible as its the ol' mediator and 24"... the king of the iMacs... I'd like that.

absolutely love the pricing too! looks like my iMac time is soon.

And please, let there be a phone...

I dont think we'll see a phone till MWSF. They just finished a prototype which means its just going into manufacturing. MWSF would be the best candidate for something like. Tuesdays update would be a brief mention of MBP, ITMS and iPods

They probably don't want anything to steal thunder away from their big announcement on the 12th. Not even an awesome new 24" iMac.

I was thinking that exact same thing this morning when I saw the new iMacs. Something must have happened yesterday that prevented them from putting the systems on the online site.

:O! Has anyone bothered to check what esle has been added to apple store? The VESA Arm thingie for the iMac 24" You can have it sit up really high or wall mount it.. This makes me really want one so I can put it on the wall in my room and use it as a tv/desktop!

This is great. Nice new family member.

I think I will go with the MacPro tho, I already have two 20inch displays and I dont want to be capped with 3 gigs of ram.

nVidia does not have better image quality. In fact, hell no it does't. Before my current graphics card I ran a 7800GT SLI system. Testing on my dell 20in widescreen the differences in AF were easily apparent. I do prefer SLI over Crossfire(the person who thought a stupid dongle cable was acceptable should be fired).

do i need it?

so....I usually don't buy things unless i really need them........since my 4 year old laptop died i have been using my old 533mhz 64mb Compaq:( .....I kinda feel like i need this iMac.......What do you think?:D

Rotating A Second Montor From Dell Supported With ATI Display Card iMacs

Rotation? On an iMac? What are you doing, turning your head sideways?
We're talking about supporting rotation on a second monitor made by Dell - which all rotate -spanning from the iMac.

Yeah. Labor Day. The Apple A-List of employees that do these changes need a day to prepare. That's why they ususally do it on Tuesday. But this week they were on Holiday until Tuesday. Thus the lanuch Wednesday.
