This is helto's FIRST POST EVER. She/He Just Joined This Morning. Welcome to MacRumors helto. Better late than never. Now get cracking sending that old iMac back.Definitely. Do it NOW and ask for a supervisor to get the restocking fee waved. They will do it if you ask politely and persist. If they refuse to give you full credit for a significant upgrade to the 24" model hang up and call back and ask for another supervisor. Keep doing that until you get a sympathetic ear on the other end. Someone will give you full credit. They'll jsut shuffle what you have to the refurb store. No biggie.

If I contact Apple (I am in UK) any ideas as to a line of approach?
Should I complain that they have launched a new model 6 days after me receiving mine? Or should I just say I don't want it?

BTW. It was built to order and I got educational discount?

Helto

Ouch, BTOs generally face some problems when it comes to returns, you can still press your case.. fight for it! It is a worthy cause!

I would prefer a core 2 duo tho :p but yeah the 14 day return it if ur picky with no questions asked it nice of apple :)

The 24" iMac has a Mobile Express Module inside, MXM type II video card.

I think thats good? not too sure? can anyone tell me if this is a standard type of card?

This is a standard for mobile graphics cards. (aka notebook computers.) I hope this means that the MacBook Pros will be getting video on an MXM, too. The big question I have is: where did you find this nugget of info? I can't find it anywhere on Apple's site. The only downside (to some) is that MXM was created by nVidia, and ATI hasn't said if they will support it or not. (It's a purely physical standard. The chips are still using the same PCI Express connection, no matter how they're connected inside the computer. It's meant to make it easier for manufacturers to change video chips by developing a replaceable card instead of having to integrate it onto the motherboard.)

Congrats bluewire (and welcome to Macrumors). That's a good question that I had not seriously contemplated until now. One answer is that the screen isn't that much taller than a 20", as the extra 4" is on the diagonal; and also the vertical dimension will increase as much up as it does down, so the upward increase in the iSight placement, relative to a 20" ought to be fairly marginal (I'm sure someone probably will do the math). But it's certainly possible that the folks at Apple may have angled the iSight ever so slightly downward to compensate for this. Plus you can always tilt the screen to get a better view. I'm going to keep my old speakers though, they're so cool.

Hey thanks. This board sees a lot of volume and I've lurked for a long time, finally decided to register. This will be my 7th Mac. Never owned a PC, ever! :D

If this is true it will be absolutely amazing to have a MBP with MXM.

Man I'm glad I waited. I just ordered a 20" model, 256MB video, 500GB HD, wireless kb & mouse. Expected ship date is the 15th. I almost went all out with the 24", but the price drop on the 20" was just too good. It'll be the first Mac I've had, I can hardly wait. :D

Just returned my iMac no problem

To clarify a few posts...

I bought a BTO 20" iMac on Aug 17th. I received it about 2 weeks ago. Just called Apple about 15 minutes ago saying I would like to return it because of the new iMac. The woman didn't even question it - let me return it no problem, no restocking fee. I'm mailing it back tomorrow.

Just checking to see if the service manuals are available.
File names for the SM (for those who are a AASP):

The GMA950 17" model is for education, right?

I dream of a day when Windows fanboys and Mac fanboys can sit down and work out their differences over a good cup of coffee and a iTunes collection of Beatles songs.

You might say I'm a bit of a dreamer.

Well it will be hard to settle out any difference, because as you may know, Windows fans are louder. :D :D :D :D

Thanks for confirming a suscpiton of mine, that infact it was a standard type of card.

I also hope that the rev.b MacBook Pro will use this. I need a faster PowerBook now.

Just back from vacation, and what great news.

The new iMacs look awesome - I'm going to start saving for a 24" now so that in a few years when my G5 iMac is finally losing its edge, I'll be able to enjoy one of those new gorgeous screens.

I have to confess that even though the new Intel iMacs are sorely tempting, I've never been happier with my G5 from last year and see no immediate reason to switch now versus waiting.

Cool news though...

Good for you! They'll be able to sell your machine refurbished just fine. There really is a qualitative difference between the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo machines - take advantage of it!

:p Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! those are so spiffy.

I might be swayed into getting one, but I'm still waiting for the MBPs.

Could be in the service manual.

Also 7600 as BTO-cool! Having NVidia GPU's is good since ATI is merging with AMD. And FW800

Kick ass! Thats funny because before I got on the computer, I thought, wouldn't it be funny if they decided to replease a bunch of new stuff on a wednesday.:D

You honestly think that if you buy an iMac you are only interested in running Mail and Safari? There are alot of people that successfully use an iMac for work with Photoshop and other pro apps. I would bet there are alot of people using Macbook Pros to write term papers, check their mail, and use Safari as well.

I'm a web developer, and I'm buying this for home (and my sysadmin is more excited about getting me one at work!), to run Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver all at the same time... did I mention the bloatware Photoshop??

And for home, let's not forget the Quake 4 I'll be running :p

P.S.: Thunderbird & Firefox for me, not Mail & Safari :) In all my years of web development, Safari still doesn't quite compare in rendering...

I would also like to have one, but why always hijack the iMac threads with the same crap, time after time.

As you claim, they are not in the same class, they are totally different, ect...

It's well documented by now, in every single thread about iMacs, that some people want a headless mid-tower $1200.00 Mac just please stop the thread hi-jacking!

I need to save space, that's why I'm buying a computer where the screen is it - I can't fit a tower.

Funnily enough, there's a company here down south called Trinix (sp?) or something that has started to sell iMac PC clones - i.e. an LCD with all the computer parts behind it - just that it's running whatever hardware you ask (within space limits,) runs whatever OS you put on it, and comes in red, blue, white, black, etc.

Still, was more worth it to me to get a Mac :) I'm sick of dealing with XP.

Can you take a look at the 24" and tell if it will be possible to change the hdd?

These iMac's seriously rock, the price point is amazing for each one of them. IF this doesn't convince my Dad I don't know what would.

I think Steve Jobs would have to knock on our door and personally hand us a 24 inch iMac.

24 inches, it's still sinking in how huge that is. I'm going to definetely visit the Apple Store and check this monster out

But that device sounds like it will just be an airport with video outs. You don't need to have a computer in your living room. Still, it is possible they could introduce a mid desktop along with that.
I dont doubt that Apple eventually will release a beefed up airport extreme 802.11n. But right now it seems more logical to release a combined Airport extreme/Mac mini with a 3.5'' HD and a TV-tuner.
First of all, your network would more or less be dead when you stream a movie from your computer to the TV. You cant record from the TV. Hence you need an additional recorder besides the Airport Extreme.
My guess is that a Mac media would be priced around the current Mac mini. (i.e. not far from the 60GB iPod). This device not need any other recording devices than Mac media.
You might get a similar halo effect from a device like that as you got from the iPod.
Apple would get more users experience how superior OSX is compared with XP/Vista.
