Gotta say, the 24'' is a moster iMac, so I'm gonna check it out this weekend, but I'm quite disappointed that they only put Merom processors in it, not Conroe...

How likely is it that Apple will release a mid-range Conroe based computer?... the 12th perhaps, the Cube 2?

In terms of performance, this would mean that the iMac and MBP w/ Merom will be about equal surely?

Cheers

3.5" drives still play an important role

For some reason i'm thinking...

"Mac Media" "A mac for the living room"

and it will look like a set top box. Not fast, but it will have output for tv and video in. You'd be watching tv and press menu on ur apple remote and the front row screen would come up with options to view tv + the standard music, movies and photos. Unfortunately the apple remote probably doesn't have enough functionality to include TIVO functionality. Then again i could be wrong.

Don't know why i'm thinking that, i wouldn't buy one but it seems plausable.

This is a standard for mobile graphics cards. (aka notebook computers.) I hope this means that the MacBook Pros will be getting video on an MXM, too. The big question I have is: where did you find this nugget of info? I can't find it anywhere on Apple's site. The only downside (to some) is that MXM was created by nVidia, and ATI hasn't said if they will support it or not. (It's a purely physical standard. The chips are still using the same PCI Express connection, no matter how they're connected inside the computer. It's meant to make it easier for manufacturers to change video chips by developing a replaceable card instead of having to integrate it onto the motherboard.)

ATi make some MXM modules, it's an open standard. Interestingly enough the 24" mentions the cards are PCI-Express, so there is a chance they are upgradable because of MXM. However it is more likely that they are using the special mobile packages with onboard memory. They are pin-to-pin compatible in both 7300 and 7600 go formats.

How easy/hard it is to change the HDD on the 17" and 20" models?

Well you have to take off the front of the case, take out the bare screen and try and fiddle with the insides to get the hard drive out. Not for the faint hearted. I think i'd buy it with the 500GB inside but it's a waste of money compared to buying one yourself plus they are noisy hitachi's.

I'm gonna vote "neutral" on this one. The decision to use merom instead of conroe was horrible, and I really expected better of apple. And the failure to update the GPU on any imac except the 24" is pretty pathetic, given that the x1600 was only an Ok choice when they first used it 8 months ago.

But the price drop is awesome, the 24"er is amazing, and I really like the low-end option (not that I'd buy it, but still).

I guess I'm just saying that if I had a 17" or 20" yonah imac I wouldn't feel any lust for these at all.

I dont doubt that Apple eventually will release a beefed up airport extreme 802.11n. But right now it seems more logical to release a combined Airport extreme/Mac mini with a 3.5'' HD and a TV-tuner.
First of all, your network would more or less be dead when you stream a movie from your computer to the TV. You cant record from the TV. Hence you need an additional recorder besides the Airport Extreme.
My guess is that a Mac media would be priced around the current Mac mini. (i.e. not far from the 60GB iPod). This device not need any other recording devices than Mac media.
You might get a similar halo effect from a device like that as you got from the iPod.
Apple would get more users experience how superior OSX is compared with XP/Vista.
True but that would mean the mini would go away ... and maybe that is the plan. Well, I suppose it could just be the high end model.

Get On Thbe Phone Halto! Tell them The Truth. You Want A 23" Core 2 Duo Instead

This is helto's FIRST POST EVER. She/He Just Joined This Morning. Welcome to MacRumors helto. Better late than never. Now get cracking sending that old iMac back.Definitely. Do it NOW and ask for a supervisor to get the restocking fee waved. They will do it if you ask politely and persist. If they refuse to give you full credit for a significant upgrade to the 24" model hang up and call back and ask for another supervisor. Keep doing that until you get a sympathetic ear on the other end. Someone will give you full credit. They'll jsut shuffle what you have to the refurb store. No biggie.

If I contact Apple (I am in UK) any ideas as to a line of approach?
Should I complain that they have launched a new model 6 days after me receiving mine? Or should I just say I don't want it?

BTW. It was built to order and I got educational discount?
What do you mean IF??

Why the hell haven't you picked up the phone yet? Of course you trell them the truth!!! Duh!

Don't worry about the custom order. It's still too close to the release date for them not to give you full credit.

Ouch, BTOs generally face some problems when it comes to returns, you can still press your case.. fight for it! It is a worthy cause!
Exactly. You're starting to piss me off Helto. Why weren't you fighting immediately since this afternoon London time? Are you a coward!?
HecubusPro said:
That will be a problem. I don't believe apple takes returns on BTO machines.
Sam* said:
They do in the UK
SEE Halto? I told you so.

Because this BTO is on the cusp of a new model change and because he wants to give them a significant amount of MORE MONEY for the 24" iMac they will make an exception. I am 99% sure if he persists.

To clarify a few posts...

I bought a BTO 20" iMac on Aug 17th. I received it about 2 weeks ago. Just called Apple about 15 minutes ago saying I would like to return it because of the new iMac. The woman didn't even question it - let me return it no problem, no restocking fee. I'm mailing it back tomorrow.
FoxyKaye said:
Good for you! They'll be able to sell your machine refurbished just fine. There really is a qualitative difference between the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo machines - take advantage of it!
Congratulations mmignano! You The Man/Woman!

Stop hesitating Halto. Get On The Phone ASAP!!!

Sleep Light

The new Imac now dims the sleep light according to the light in the room!
From Apples site "Even when it’s sleeping, iMac thinks about what’s best for you. In low-light environments, a sensor detects the room’s ambient light and adjusts the sleep light to match — so you and your iMac can both catch some Zs."

Maybe some people will be able to sleep in the same room as their Mac.

This has to be the easiest update ever for Apple, all they did was buy new panels and swap out processors. A few price cuts, and woala, everybody is happy. Still nice updates though

20" iMac Is Smart To Drive Rotatable Dell 24" 2407 Wide monitor Only $700 More

Man I'm glad I waited. I just ordered a 20" model, 256MB video, 500GB HD, wireless kb & mouse. Expected ship date is the 15th. I almost went all out with the 24", but the price drop on the 20" was just too good. It'll be the first Mac I've had, I can hardly wait. :D
Plus is you can drive a 24" rotatable Dell with that 20" ATI Video card that you can't with the 24" model's NVIDEA Video Card. So you can have both side by side for only $700 more (20% off sale price).

How bout HD video performance?

Everyone's talking about gaming but I'm also interested to know how well the new iMacs can do HD video. Apparently, ATI offers better off-CPU processing than Nvidia when it comes to HD decoding. (I could be wrong if Nvidia has somehow recently tweaked their drivers though)

Extremetech did a test between the ATI X1000 series and Nvidia's 7000GT series. Check it out:

P.S. Sorry if someone has posted this before.

Just add an EyeTV hybrid and a Terk TV5 and you're in HD Biz For $200

I wouldn't worry about it. HDTV Video is not Video Graphics intensive like 3-D and gaming is. It'll be perfect. Just add an EyeTV hybrid and a Terk TV5 and you're in HD reception & recording business for only $200 extra.

HD video playback is more dependant on the processor than the video card. All of the new iMacs shouldn't have any trouble with even 1080p video playback.

You Way Underestimate the Internal Changes. There are a lot of significant improvements inside - esp on the 23" since it is really an all new model.

iMac Beats Dell XPS410

Apple is passing on the savings! Dell is more expensive on the 20" and does not have an entry level Core 2 offering!!

So why did intel build a chipset that couldn't access more? Other macs have been going beyond 4 gigs for years now, it doesn't seem like it's that great a technical hurdle.

I doubt it...if that were the case then wouldn't the G5's and Mac Pros be limited as well?

The base model is a stripped down one for people who want the cheapest machine. It's obviously not the machine for you, get the $1199. I think it's a great idea, why not let people who have minimal graphic needs save some money?

On the 24, you can upgrade to 256 if you want it as well.

I cannot believe I didnt see this ... only when ordering was I able to see this.
Perfect fix.

Glad its also an option on the 20" as well; pretty cheap at that!
