I'm gonna vote "neutral" on this one. The decision to use merom instead of conroe was horrible, and I really expected better of apple. And the failure to update the GPU on any imac except the 24" is pretty pathetic, given that the x1600 was only an Ok choice when they first used it 8 months ago.

But the price drop is awesome, the 24"er is amazing, and I really like the low-end option (not that I'd buy it, but still).

I guess I'm just saying that if I had a 17" or 20" yonah imac I wouldn't feel any lust for these at all.
Merom is not "horrible" in the iMac, it is intended to provide quiet, cool operation, with little performance penalty. The same reasoning goes into the choice of GPU.

After all, the iMac is more or less a notebook on a stand. It's about simple elegance and nonobtrusiveness into your workflow, not ultimate performance.

If you need performance, get a Mac Pro.

TO those who want the headless Mac. First of all, maybe you should have bought the G4 cube, if people were actually buying it maybe that model would still be around today.

Second. You say with iMac you have to throw the display away. Ok, in case you didnt know, Macs have high resale value. Most people sell the damn thing. They dont throw it away.

Then there is this whole "I already have a display". Are you that tied to the display? Man, you would think the thing had your babies. Sell it, put it towards the iMac. When you want to upgrade, sell the iMac buy a new one. Done deal!

Along the same line of resale value. Let me see you build a PC and try to get %50 of its value 3-4 years later. Good luck. Eventually that PC is non upgradable, and you will have to "throw it away".

Lastly stop being cheap and buy a Mac Pro. You can hook that up the display you love so much.

I actually used a G4 Cube right up until my G5 replaced it just over a year ago. Fantastic little machine, really. Good looks, expandability - everything I was looking for in a Mac. Got a decent deal on mine too. Paid $899 with an Apple monitor and an Epson printer.

However the reason no one else bought this system isn't because virtually no one needed a middle of the road, upgradeable Mac. It's because at one point it actually cost more than the G4 Tower which had better specs. I'm confidant that had this system been priced lower it might still be around in one form or another.

Instead now we have a Mini as our entry level, an iMac in the middle and a high-end tower for the rest. That lineup might cater to most, but I know quite a few designers like myself who need expandability far more than we need horsepower. As of right now there is no Intel desktop Mac for me, so I sit and wait.

Overwhelming logic there...

My new LCDTV is only 4 months old. I want a Mac to link nicely, indeed elegantly to it. iMac clearly isn't the solution. TV stays - 60cm/24" isn't the 101cm/40" I am watching now.

Right. I need a Workstation with all its expense because I want a headless Mac that can support a couple of 250 gig drives and runs a vaguely decent graphics card....oh and it doesn't have a remote or ir port for one - so no front row...

There is a BIG niche here for Apple to replace your vcr/dvd/hdd recorder under the digital TV, and tap into iTunes, ITMS, iPhoto, iMovie, and future multimedia products. Mini is too small (HDD max 160, no graphics card of note, not C2D for future software) and Pro is to expensive and has the wrong form factor (not pizza box).

Amen

I hear ya. I was leaning towards a pro for 'upgradability' realize for home/game use it was OVERKILL. Never liked the performance/look of iMac but this new 24" just jumped up to top of 'the buy list'. I'm holding out till Tuesday though :) never know... sweet and upgradeable and dam it just fits on my corner computer desk ::grin::

I'm playing WoW on a 17" pb now. have a G4 with 15" flat panel and a 15" pb. I was so hoping for an 'inbetween' iMac and newest Workstation. I am waiting until Tuesday and hitting the purchase button. This will work. The best solution, no, better than what I have yes. Will I be happy, hell yeah! perspective folks perspective :)

You know what this means?

This means that the stand alone monitors are also getting a bump in size. I think the 23 incher will be replaced with a 24 incher and the 30 is also likely to go to 32.

Both may end up with a build in iSight

Next Tuesday is Photo and Film week, think of the posibilities.

Sorry still holding for MacBook Pro with Meron and Leopard to remove the chains from the new chip and SantaRosa.

Finally the Apple logo on the front is in proportion to the machine.

Definately would like this machine, just too scared to find out how much my first-gen 1.8Ghz G5 20" is worth :D

Service Manual

1. Bezel-the access card tool isn't required in order to remove the bezel at all
2. Ambient and IR are nestled in a heatsink, in a metal shield
3. PSU and speakers are different
4. Access card tool used tp remove the stand now.
5. Matsushita supplies the SuperDrive

they should come standard with 2gb. tons of pcs comes with 2gb now. The prices are very good and apple should really kill with these. I will get a 20".

You'd be surprised; Macs hold their resale value real well. A quick search on ebay shows they have been selling from $700 - $1K. YMMV Not bad to get up to half back for selling your old iMac.

If you are gonna sell on ebay, you had better put it up ASAP as I have a hunch ebay will be flooded with iMacs real soon, driving the price down.

The SAME DAY that apple starts to offer 1GB RAM as standard on their mainstream models and already people are whining for 2GB. Wow.

PS It's called a Shift Key, look into it...
:D

ummm lets see

ok configure a mini 799 model and the inexpensive 17 in iMac. Diference is 200 yet the iMac offers a lot more with some exceptions.
1) A screen 17 inch
2) A keyboard
3) A mouse
4) more ports
5) bigger disk
6) better processor
7) No superdrive
8) No bluetooth (and not an option)
9) No remote

Very interesting..... Wonder what that will do to the mini.

One more thing.... Why max of 3 gigs on the new machine?
Wonder if first socket with 1 gig stick is not user servisable.

I would think you could go to 4 gig, something smells.

I guess now the only thing left to wait for is the Santa Rosa, then the iMac will be fully 64-bit right? What is the point of 64-bit chips anyway? What are some advantages?

I have gotten many, many offers withing 2 hours of posting on craiglist at $800 for my 1.8 20"

That's the big news on the 12th !! iTunes supports "Plays For Sure"

I dream of a day when Windows fanboys and Mac fanboys can sit down and work out their differences over a good cup of coffee and a iTunes collection of Beatles songs.

So that's what the big announcement will be on the 12th - Apple and iTunes now support Windows Media for music and video.

Yes, once iTunes music "Plays For Sure" we can have that espresso.... ;)

Are they eventually going to change the name?

Sorry if this has been posted already, but is Apple going to change the name of the iMac? Since the swtich to Intel (Powerbook-MacBook Pro, PowerMac-Mac Pro, iBook-MacBook) and the Mac Mini, is the iMac eventually going to be just called "Mac"

(But I guess with that logic, they'd change "iPod"... )

No.

No. Just "Mac" will be the name of The New Form-Factor 64-bit Conroe Mini-Tower/Home-Theatre-Pizza-Box™ that Apple will be releasing next Tuesday.

:D

Graphics Memory

I have been waiting so long to switch to Apple. The only reason I never have is because the only program I need is Tradestation and some other financial software that they don't make a version for Mac. Now with Bootcamp, I am so close to changing. Now with the 24" available, it is now time.

Simple question for you knowledgeable guys. Isn't 128MB of RAM plenty? I only have an old nVidia with 64mb in this 2 year old Compaq and it never bogs down with all the charting software. I don't play any type of games. I am not worried about $100 difference, but for my purposes, isn't 128 plenty? Thanks!

Happy to be joining the Mac World!! :)

As long as you're not doing any 3-D work, 128MB is just fine.

(I'm still running a Quicksilver G4 with 32MB
 and it's okay, unless I play Unreal Tourney or something)
