Does this mean the MBP updates will also stick with X1600s or can we hope for at least X1800s

X1700.

Not quite what everyone wants but slightly better than before.

Personally I couldn't care less if the MBP got the GMA950. That will get hate mail...

Whoa, i could, may that curse never come upon us.

The only thing that irks me is the availability of the 7600 on the iMac but not the Mac Pro, granted, I'm going to get a 1900 anyway, but it's the principle of the thing.

What is that all about??

I think he means something like:

"If you're not playing 3D games, and only doing 2D and video, the GMA950 is a more than adequate, inexpensive, and power-efficient solution for you."

If you're not doing those, you'll be buying a MacBook. Well most would.

No. Just "Mac" will be the name of The New Form-Factor 64-bit Conroe Mini-Tower/Home-Theatre-Pizza-Box™ that Apple will be releasing next Tuesday.

:D

I ordered a 20" iMac a couple of weeks ago, but it hadn't been dispatched yet (in fact, it was due to be dispatched today). The Apple order status site was down earlier, until just after the Apple Store came back up with the new iMacs, and lo and behold, my order has been replaced with a 20" iMac Core 2 Duo!

They've even upgraded the RAM to 2GB (I'd paid for an upgrade to 1GB on the original order), and dropped the price I pay!

So top marks to Apple - a brand new iMac, specced higher than the original, for £80 less! I don't know many other manufacturers that would do this - it's the kind of service that keeps Apple customers loyal.

The only downside is, I was expecting it to be delivered on Friday but now I have to wait until the 19th! But really, I don't mind!

I ordered mine in June. :( I wish I had waited.

as - I have the 950 in my Intel Mac mini and it is at its limit in handling my high resolution photographs in Keynote presentations. We have the mini loaded with 2 GB ram as well. I am not sure how to break down what the cpu does vs the gpu in the mini or MBP - but I need faster processing than what I am seeing.

Thanks

Well, I start school tomorrow, and thats what I needed it for, so really, I had no choice. But man.
I'm ready to cry.
I already screamed.

I discovered eBay for the first time as a seller. :) It helped me make more than enough money to get a MBP (when it goes C2D) in a little over a month. And I managed to get rid of a lot of crap I didn't need in the process. When I saw the new 24" iMac on the apple site this morning though, I was sorely tempted to put the idea of a C2D MBP behind me, and get another iMac. :D

My desire for the MBP won out.

Merom is not "horrible" in the iMac, it is intended to provide quiet, cool operation, with little performance penalty. The same reasoning goes into the choice of GPU.

After all, the iMac is more or less a notebook on a stand. It's about simple elegance and nonobtrusiveness into your workflow, not ultimate performance.

If you need performance, get a Mac Pro.

Wrong on every count. First, the G5 was hotter than Conroe, and the rev. C G5 imac was quiet and cool. Second, there are nvidea cards that are both cooler and faster than the x1600.

Third, the iMac is not a notebook on a stand. Again, I'll point you to the imac G5. The G5 could never go in a laptop (hence this whole intel switch) but it was in the iMac, and quite successfully too, as evidenced by the quiet and cool performance of the rev. C G5 iMacs. The iMac also has a full sized hard drive. The iMac is a desktop, capable of taking full advantage of components that cannot fit in laptops (or minis).

Finally, the gap between the Mac Pro and the iMac is absurd. There are loads of people who need something between a low-clock merom with last year's mid-range graphics card and a quad-core xeon workstation.

The pro apps preclude this. You can quote me, never shall Apple use GMA graphics in the pro level Apples. So say I.

How odd that this 24" computer is nearly exactly what a group of us were brainstorming last week. Since we are all filmmakers, we wanted a second HD in the case but wooooohooooo do I want one. . . since I can't shell out for a Pro and sleep at night.

Dang, if the Core2 Duo hits the laptops next... what shall I do?!?!?!?

Bought an iMac in June for School In September? That's Pretty Illogical & Amazing

What were you thinking? No choice? You had the choice of waiting until school started.

You were supposed to wait until school started and gague the situation in September not buy at the beginning of summer vacation when you didn't even need it.

You better sell that system and buy the Core 2 Duo STAT.

Upgradable GPU

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread but the 24"er has upgradable GPU. I mean it is an actual card that slots in like some PC laptops. Can we now please stop hearing the Whine of non upgradable GPU's? That is all I ever hear on MR these days! New most upgradable iMac ever. No tower coming. Media Centre maybe, but more likely to be advanced mini at some later stage. I'll still hold my breath for those wanting a mid range tower but it aint happening.

On the off chance that something like this is in the wings for next week, I'm holding off on getting another HD Tivo....

Yes, indeed! That thing's pretty sweet! Had it been available when I bought my Mini+Dell 2407, I think I'd have bought the iMac instead to get the faster processor, better graphics card and integrated iSight, but hey! I'm glad to see Apple introducing new products like this one. And yeah, I think the choice of a 24-inch screen (instead of 23) is really neat. It will probably fit better with my 2407 when I upgrade from the Mini in a couple of years. (But then, who knows what else will be available two years from now?!?) It does suck for owners of Apple 23-inch displays though as the screen sizes will be just a tad different if you use them in extended desktop mode with the iMac, but as far as I'm concerned, 24 was the way to go. In general, I think that most casual users will save their money and go with a smaller screen (despite my best attempts at selling them the sweetness of a 1920x1200 screen!), but it's awesome that Apple has an all-in-one that does not feel underpowered and small for people like me. It really is a nice machine. It's... just wow!!!

20" iMac Also Has Upgradable ATI X1600 to 256MB For Only $75

The 20" is also upgradable to 256 ATI X1600 card for only $75 - not only the 23".

The 24"er makes for a ncie machine for anyone who was/is going to be in the market for such.

It I hadn't just bought a Mac Pro, I'd definetly hit it :D

Now if they don't make the new iMac purchasers wait like us Pro buyers have had to, to get our machines, that will be very cool.
