Apple Releases Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro

There is no such word as "unemployeds". The word 'unemployed' is an adjective or a noun that must be used with a plural verb.

You remind me of my former English teacher :D

Well "Steve Nojobs" doesn't have the same ring.

...or does it?

I think the best time to purchase a MB/MBP would be after the release of Leopard because I don't know how they will make Time Machine work with the current hard drives. Will these hard drives be partitioned equally? The 200 gig HD might mean 100 gig for general usage, and the other 100 gig is set aside for Time Machine. I'm no computer guy, but to me, that would be the only way to make that work. Its like constant backing up of all your data, and you'll need lots of space for that. For desktops, it would be easier because you can add an external HD, but for laptops, it's a pain to lug around an external one, and to have to plug one in everytime you use your MB/MBP would be silly.

I didn't follow the Keynote about Time Machine too closely (or look into it much before posting this :p ), but I would imagine that users would have the option to specify 'heavy use' folders that could get a constant backup. I wouldn't want to devote 20 GB of hard disk space to back up my music when I've already got DVD backups. Otherwise, it seems like you're wasting back up space for non-priority files. Sorry if this is a redundant post, but this thread is just exploding exponentially right now ;)

Obviously someone who has never been in a race car because that's exactly how they tell how fast they are going. You can only write as fast as the platters spin. A 5400 RPM drive WILL NOT write as fast as a 7200 RPM. I don't care who makes it. So yes, HD RPMs do matter! Go back to "PC-LAND" or Gatesville.

What does going back to PC-Land or Gatesville have to do with what he posted?

And you need to double check your facts, the rotational speed of the platter is only one factor in the drive speed equation. Drive heads read and write in linear fashion along the drive surface as it rotates underneath it (newer perpendicular recording methods not accounted for). If you increase the data density, there is more data passing between the platter and drive head when comparing at the same rotational speed. The overall speed of a hard drive is determined by the number of platters, heads, rotational speed, data density, head efficeincy, cache, cache efficeincy, etc.. Speed and efficeincy are also dependent upon what location on the platter surface the head is reading from. The outter edge rotating faster and all that...

Using simplified numbers, if you compare a drive platter that stores 1000KB per linear inch on a platter surface. Let's work with a ring of data at 2" diameter -- it will have 6280KB total. The read rate at 7200rpm is 753,600KB/sec as it reads 6280KB in 1/120th of a second. The read rate at 5400rpm is 565,200KB/sec as it reads 6280KB in 1/90th of a second. If you bump the data density by 60%, giving 10,048KB on that same ring of data, then your data speed at 5400rpm would be 904,320KB/sec or 20% faster than the data speed of the lower density 7200rpm model.

To use your race car analogy. Someone who counts cars each lap as they pass the starting line will count more cars if there's 16 of them on the track traveling 135Mph than if there were 10 cars going 180Mph.

Intel just needs to start working on a line of chips codenamed Godot now. :D

Haha, still want to be able to play oblivion in the outdoor scenes with included graphix. As well, what happened to 7200rpm HD?

Well, as far as the updates go I am thrilled that I waited... basically $400-500 in upgrades on the base model, which is now a killer deal!! Apple more than exceded my expectations :)

Question: Does anyone know if they actually stock glossy MBP's in the Apple stores? I know that they have display models, but I never asked if they had them on hand or if they directed you to order online.

Thanks!

Thank you Milo, for this link.

However the price between the models has not changed. It is only that now you get so much more for your money. Or is it the price difference between the current refurb-prices that they use now?

Why don't you give them a call? They'll tell you exactly what they're willing to offer. My guess would be that it would be somewhere between the refurb price and the old price.

I'm not. Go read the post again. What I said is accurate.

Since you didn't say specifically which model you got, reading your post again isn't going to help. What were the specs of the machine you bought?

to say that RPM isn't relevant is just stupidity.

Well, good thing he didn't say that.

No, the external drive will always be slower, so you'd prefer to keep the media files on an internal drive. Use the external drive for backup.

Absolutely not true. None of the internal drives offered are particularly fast, and their speeds are easily exceeded by desktop (external) drives. And the FW interface certainly isn't a bottleneck, especially now that they have fw800. What makes you think an external drive will be slower?

Trust Me!

Glossy is only good if you have near-perfect lighting conditions and will be using front row a good amount of the time and or just really have a fetish for glossy:confused:

But what I tell people is that it's really just a personal preference. Unless you are a biz professional (most who buy a MBP are) then I kind of try to lean them towards the Matted 'Anti-glare' without being too objective.

does anyone know if there's an easy access hard drive like the macbook?
Also, what 64-bit benefits will we have in leopard and in future applications since it only comes with up to 3gb of ram? The ram is also unmatched if you put 3gb, will this cause it to be slower than being dual channel? Also is the expresscard 34 supporting esata?

not sure about 64 bit in Leopard but in winblows game called Crysis ther is a 15% increase in speed when playing the 64 version apparently

anyone have any past experience on what the retail stores have in stock by way of machines with upped hard drives? i think i may be looking at the 15" 2.33/2GB RAM with the 160GB drive and i would much prefer to walk into a store this week/next week and buy that config there rather than ship it.

I know the store i work in won't have that kind of upgrade option in-house. Not yet at least.

AWESOME! i'm pretty stoked on the new mbp's. they are gorgeous.

but when can i expect a macbook speedbump.

From 1.5GHz "PowerBook" G4 To 2.33GHz C2D MacBook Pro

I am a Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz owner. A few questions:

1: Any pros/cons to the larger screen? I am thinking I want to upgrade to the 17" from my current 15".

2: If I am a more consumer-type user, how will I see the 4200rpm drive impact performance. I really wawnt to keep my media and have a Windows partition on it, so space is definitely a factor. My current 120GB drive is maxed out!

Thanks for any input you can share.
As long as you don't have to capture video with it, you will love the extra space. It's denser so faster than a smaller capacity 4200 drive. As you are already maxed out on a 120 you need all 200GB as do I.

I agree, and I believe Apple feel the same way. They put glossy screens on their consumer laptops (MacBooks) and make matte the default for their pros because they know for professional work a glossy screen is useless. They've only made glossy an option for the Pro laptops for people who like to pretend they are pros but don't actually do any real work on their MBPs and instead just spend their time surfing the web for pr0n :)

Just bought the low-end model... super happy they updated the RAM, burner, and hard drive size.

I would have liked a better GPU, but good enough for me :D

Edit - Scheduled to ship October 30th.

Why would anyone spend $2,000 +, when you can hold off for a few months and get Leopard pre-installed, or wait a bit longer and get Leopard pre-installed WITH the Santa Rosa, flash-booting chip.

There's no way I'm buying a MBP for that much money so close to a new OS launch that will cost an extra couple hundred... not to mention the promise of the Santa Rosa... HOLD OFF!

Honestly, is there any time that you aren't better off waiting a few months? At some point you need a new machine, so you have to buy.

Cheers.

Ordering online will probably get it to you quicker... You could potentially pay lower tax depending on where you live vs. buying at a store.

you really think so? i called a couple stores in my area and one said "a few days" and the other said it could be as quick as tomorrow or the day after. i'm prolly going to wait and pick it up at a store. anyone know how long it took for the stores to get the C2D iMacs?
