No More Speed Bumps In The Foreseeable Future

wyatt23 said:
AWESOME! i'm pretty stoked on the new mbp's. they are gorgeous.

but when can i expect a macbook speedbump.
You can't. There won't be one for a long time. Nor will there be another one on the MBP for quite some time as well. Intel hasn't even published anything about future speeds beyond what they are shipping now.

Apple's headline: "...Seatbelts Sold Separately."
Bad marketing, seatbelts suggests crashing.

Well i dunno, but to me that says that they go damn fast.
A pessimist would think about crashing.

Trust Me!

Glossy is only good if you have near-perfect lighting conditions and will be using front row a good amount of the time and or just really have a fetish for glossy:confused:

But what I tell people is that it's really just a personal preference. Unless you are a biz professional (most who buy a MBP are) then I kind of try to lean them towards the Matted 'Anti-glare' without being too objective.

It IS a personal preference. If you really aren't sure which you want, try stopping by a retailer and looking at the screens for yourself (even a pc retailer if you don't have an apple store around). I much prefer the glossy to the matte, but that's me. :D

apple store providence place just told me "very soon" for the 15" in store - possibly by the end of the week. he also said the 17" will more likely be in store "by November"

arrghhh now to decide what to buy.

That explains the shock that went through my system when I received my order conf and noticed I had a glossy screen. I called Apple and they changed my order to the matte, but why make the glossy standard on the 17" and then make the matte standard on the 15"

Guess you have to look over those specs every time! Just glad I caught that before I received it!:D

Maybe that was some sort of an error on Apple's part because I just checked their online site with all 3 configs and they all come standard with matted and NOT glossy.

Soo happy FW 800 is back

the 15" is many pro's ideal size, including myself, but was holding off on a purchase of a new Macbook Pro due to the lack of FW 800, which I need to support my external HD on my current 15" G4 Powerbook 1.25Ghz...
Now that 64 bit is also included in the package with the new processors, and Leopard coming soon, I think i will make the switch to an intel based mac soon too, although I can wait until Leopard comes along, by that time any bugs in the hardware may be ironed out, which are harder to rectify than those that may be present in Leopard...

Because...

Why would anyone spend $2,000 +, when you can hold off for a few months and get Leopard pre-installed, or wait a bit longer and get Leopard pre-installed WITH the Santa Rosa, flash-booting chip.

There's no way I'm buying a MBP for that much money so close to a new OS launch that will cost an extra couple hundred... not to mention the promise of the Santa Rosa... HOLD OFF!

Because some people aren't that frugal and have been either wanting or needing not only this upgrade but more importantly an Intel Mac.

I am going to use my 25% employee discount through my retail store and use it as soon as I get it with Final Cut Studio, Boot Camp, DVD Ripping/Proccessing, and H.264 misc. stuff:cool:

Just as I said and expected, only minor changes. I think its great Apple is giving 2GB of memory in standard configs, that is hopefully a sign of things to come in the pro line overall.

I should hope so. It now seems a bit strange to have the top-of-the-line (and costly) Mac Pro being offered with only half the memory of a laptop.

FirmTek $90 ESATA ExpressCard Link

does anyone know if there's an easy access hard drive like the macbook?
Also, what 64-bit benefits will we have in leopard and in future applications since it only comes with up to 3gb of ram? The ram is also unmatched if you put 3gb, will this cause it to be slower than being dual channel? Also is the expresscard 34 supporting esata?
Looks like no easy acces HD Bay. Unmatched is not going to make a noticeable difference.

Apple has links to Cardbus Products on their MacBook Pro Design Page.

Firmtek $90 SeriTek/1SM2 CardBus32 for Mac

Link to better picture.

Yeah, I asked my Apple Store when I should call back to inquire about the new MBP's, they said later today or tomorrow.

To answer a post earlier on, the iMac's were in stores about a week and a half after they were anounced.

For me, the biggest news is the 3GB of RAM and 200GB of disk that's available now--frankly the 2GB in my MBP-CD (Core Duo--how are we going to distinguish them now?) is a bit anemic, especially for running Parallels and PowerPC apps simultaneously.

Ian, I agree with you completely. I am happy about the ram bump and the space bump.
Awesome for all. I'm not buying, but I'm pleased with the announcement.

I don't know if the "Airline Adapter" is new with the release of the new MBP [new to me at least], but don't most airlines these days not allow computers to be used during flights? Why wouldn't they just release a car adapter? I'm sure thousands more more would find a use for an automobile charger rather than an airline charger which, by the way, I have never seen on a plane before. Usually I'm seated only with a headphone jack, a broken station knob, some 500lbs guy and a crying baby.

The airline adapter from Apple is new but not a new technology (duh). I don't know what world you've been living on but they definitely let people use laptops on planes. Only airlines like Quantus and a few others have TEMPORARILY disallowed use of some line of laptops like because of the whole Sony battery fiasco.

Stopped by the Raleigh Crabtree Apple store at lunch today and the word there was they expected the new 15 inch MBPs within the next day or two, and the new 17 inch MBPs within the next week or two. So it looks like just a short wait for the 15s and a longer wait for the 17s.

I haven't read all the messages, but I'm wondering....
How many of you that have been waiting and whining actually took the plunge this morning?

I will, once they're released here.

I just brought up a new browser and tried again. While it shows "glossy" as the selected item, in the cart on the right in only lists widescreen. I added it to my cart and it changed to glossy. I'm assuming that is what happened when I orded this morning...it does seem to be some sort of glitch in apple's system as the details list glossy as an option...

who knows...it was probably some webguy who forgot to make that as a default...

There is no such word as "unemployeds". The word 'unemployed' is an adjective or a noun that must be used with a plural verb.

Come on, get with the joke :p

you really think so? i called a couple stores in my area and one said "a few days" and the other said it could be as quick as tomorrow or the day after. i'm prolly going to wait and pick it up at a store. anyone know how long it took for the stores to get the C2D iMacs?

Yeah ordering online will not necessarily mean that you will get one sooner. Trust me I'm a Mac Specialist;)

Or don't, since upgrading your HD will void your warranty (in a Macbook Pro)

I don't think that's true. Do you have a source? Generally things like upgrades are allowed by the user.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with the people saying that you HAVE to use an external drive for audio. As I said in a previous post, i make music on my Powerbook with 1 gig RAm and 5400 internal drive.

I accept that for MAXIMUM track count and ASOLUTE BEST performance then yes, an external drive would be better. But I don't write music like that. I was simply stating that I was disappointed with this regression in maximum available HD speed moving from 1st gen to 2nd gen.

I don't think anyone has said that an external drive is mandatory, just that it provides an improvement in performance. If your sessions are modest enough that you can get by with an internal drive, you're likely not going to notice the difference between 5400 and 7200, it's not the weak link in such a situation.

Why would you not want current processor technology in a $1,100 laptop? Just because it's not "Pro" doesn't mean it needs to be outdated. That might have flown in the PPC era, but you're not going to get people to switch with old Intel chips.

But PC makers are still shipping laptops with older chips. Why is it OK for them to do it? I'd love to see at least one model of MB keep the CD for awhile and keep dropping the price.

The practical benefit NOW is more than 2GB of memory capacity.

That's not true, 32 bit hardware is limited to 4 gigs of memory, not 2.

Anyone have an idea as to the brand Apple uses for the 120GB SATA drives?? I really hope it is a Seagate or Hitachi... I could live with Fujitsu or Toshiba, but the WD Scorpio's are ****.

We've alreaddy seen threads entitled "Waiting for Santa Rosa" though, I think this will be a never ending cycle under intel. :(

anything for macbooks? please?

Santa Rosa is the successor to the current Centrino Processor. If Apple decides to use Santa Rosa they will put it in the Mac Mini and the Macbook, you will never see Santa Rosa in the Macbook Pro or the iMac. So go buy a Core 2 Duo machine.

The current Centrino processor, is simply a weaker version of the current Pentium 4 Processor, the next version of Centrino (possible to be called Centrino 2 or Centrino Pro) will be a weaker version of the Core 2 Duo (but more powerful then the P4). This will mean less power consumption (so less heat and more battery life) and 64 bit support. I am not sure if Apple will put Centrino in any of their line up, but if it does, the Mac Mini and the Macbook are the likley candiates for the Centrino platform.

Anybody have any idea when the macbook will be updated now? Some of us aren't rich or don't need to pay an aram and a leg for an outdated update.

I think the best time to purchase a MB/MBP would be after the release of Leopard because I don't know how they will make Time Machine work with the current hard drives. Will these hard drives be partitioned equally? The 200 gig HD might mean 100 gig for general usage, and the other 100 gig is set aside for Time Machine. I'm no computer guy, but to me, that would be the only way to make that work. Its like constant backing up of all your data, and you'll need lots of space for that. For desktops, it would be easier because you can add an external HD, but for laptops, it's a pain to lug around an external one, and to have to plug one in everytime you use your MB/MBP would be silly.

I like the MB's because they have user replaceable HD's, which means you can continue to update the space, and speed of your HD. I think the MBP should get this option too.

Anyways, just thinking outloud. But personally, I am waiting for a new MB because of the convenient HD and RAM accessibility, which is more important to me than the super fast processor, cuz faster processor means hotter computer.

Time Machine backs up ONLY to an external or second hard drive. NOT the main drive on any machine at any size. The reason for time machine is to have a backup if the main drive melts. It would not be logical to back up on the same physical drive used daily.

The ONLY way to use time machine on a MacBook is to buy a EXTERNAL HD and connect it that way using USB for FireWire. I think a lot of people do not understand that you will need another drive to use time machine.
