in pricing out a 17", the upgrade cost to 3gb from 2 gb is $529 (government store). I went out and checked around online and those places that had a single 2 gb PC5300 wanted more (and in some cases wildly more). What gives? In the past Apple has always charged obscene amounts for ram. Surely Apple isn't being competitive on ram pricing. Why, that would be a sign of the impending apocalypse!
Seriously tho, is Apple's price of $529 for the extra gb actually good?

No HD Bay No Sale

sorry Multimedia, but it is now official: the new MBP's do NOT have an easy access HD bay.

Well I gotta stick to my guns and only consider a MacBook then? But because I just got my first 30" Dell Monitor, I'm thinking the $1799 Educational plus 160 and a third party 1GB stick for about $2k. But only after i get my 8-Core Mac Pro first. By then these may all be in the refurb page and I'll go for a 17" stock refurb for I guess about $2399.

Yes they are. Beginning with the C2D iMac, Apple has radically lowered their RAM upgrade prices to within competitive offerings.

30" Dells Have A 3.5" Vertical Adjustment I Call An "Elevator"

sblasl said:
What is the "elevator" that you are referring to?
3.5" vertical adjustment. They are 18.5" compressed and 22" extended high. Apple Displays have no vertical adjustment at all - only tilt. Dells also tilt 3º forward and 19º backward. And their stand swivels 60º left and right. Apple's stand is fixed with no swivel at all.

Plus the Dell 30" is only $1279. From a value point of view it's a no brainer. Dell wins hands down when it comes to displays.

Went to the apple store today! Woah that place is nice. They should be getting the new models within the next few days.

So.... Heat ... is it an issue or not?! I talked to somebody at the so-called 'genius bar' there. They said 'There is no heat issue.... ie, the heat is not an issue'.

Fine, I won't put it on my lap and I won't put pillows on top or below it. BUT, am I really to believe that 4 years from now the components inside won't have worn down from the excessive and constant heat?

Should I just quit my belly-aching and buy one or what?

so the 120 GB HD uses LMR while the 160 GB HD uses PMR, can anybody point me to some good reviews or other website comparing the differences in speed?

i'm absolutely sure that the size difference doesn't matter for me, but if i'm already spending 2.5k i might as well make it 2.6 and get the fastest, right? though it would mean another week before I get one...

purchasing advice

I have a 17 inch macbook pro 2.16 CD and now that the C2D I am impressed but is it worth all of money and hassle of upgrading and would it be that much better. Also, would waiting 7-10 months for santa rosa be more sensable.

so i found this review http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/fujitsu-mhv2120bh.html

which includes a seagate 160 5.4k PMR HD in it's review (which i think someone said is what is in the new MBPs). The fujitsu did pretty awful, but it actually beat out the 160 in a few tests, so now i really don't know!

So, where are all the "I can get a Dell with better specs for less" posts now? I tried to on the Dell Canada store, but couldn't manage to configure a Dell with a 120 GB HD, 2 GB of RAM, bluetooth, equivalent wireless, and DL DVD burner for less than $500 more than an equivalent MBP at the Apple Canada store (admittedly, I didn't have a coupon).

I just got off the phone with a guy at the apple store and he said they recieved some display models today but theyt wouldn't have sellable product for a week. However when i spoke with someone this afternoon they said they are expecting product as soon as tommorow. Is it really possible that apple retail stores don't even know what product is coming to them and when?

Nope! I called my local Apple store on Tuesday as soon as it opened to check and see if they got them in, and the guy said, "No, we pretty much find out about new products the same time as you, so as of right now, we don't have any. You should check back later." So I ordered it by phone (est. arrival: OCT. 30!) because the guy said the retail stores wouldn't get them in "for a while." But had I waited just ONE DAY (or even knew the store was getting them in so soon), I would've been able to get it today... :/ who knew?

I just changed from 17" MBP 2.16 CD also. If you keep the box and everything in good shape you'd be amazed at how close you can come on a well timed eBay sale, especially if you're willing to buy a refurb in a month or so.

It's always going to be a personal decision - I have had two 17" machines and wanted to go back to the 15" form factor. So for me it's worth it as I want to make this change and the reappearance of FW800 (that I use quite often) made it easy to go back to 15". If you don't want to spend the difference for the upgrades, wait. Nice thing is that you end up always under warranty this way, no extended contract. I just sort of assume that each year I'm going to spend some $ on upgrading a machine. I always sell the old ones on eBay w/original materials and do pretty well.

Good luck whatever way you go - all of the MBP are really nice, so long as you made it past any phsical issues with rev 1.

Well, I am glad I waited, the upgrade was quite substantial. Though the case was not changed, virtually every internal spec was changed.... VERY happy about the 2gig ram standard. The 64 bit capability and 802.11n is quite assuring in terms of keeping up with new future applications. Anyway, now all I need to do is wait for it to ship, ordered right when they came out in the morning.

Will calling apple speed up shipment at all? I ignorantly paid extra for the expedited shipping...

No, calling won't speed it up. But, you can always get a refund on the shipping. If you get someone nice, which they all seem to be so far, they will refund you and leave you on the expedited shipping. That is what they did for me. But judging from posts on here and from what the guy at Apple said, they all get to the customers at the same time. Call and get a refund and use your $15 as a good start towards a case or something.

Call Apple To Cancel Shipping Fees

You can phone them and cancel the shipping fee. It will still get to you ASAP.

It seems to me it's a bit hard to choose a disk based on speed when we don't know what brand is actually being offered. We assume it is the Toshiba 200GB because that is the only known standard sized 2.5" on the market, but Apple could be getting advanced shipments from some other vendor. Does Apple frequently deal with Toshiba for supply of HDs?

I think so. Don't they use a Toshiba HD in the iPod? Anyways, it doesn't make business sense to offer a product that is not readily available(ie Core 2 Duo):)

There's a Fujitsu MHV2160BH that's pretty new, uses perpendicular recording and is untested, at least by Tom's Hardware. I don't think we have confirmation of the manufacturer of the 160GB yet, but the 120GB is apparently a Fujitsu MHV2120BH.

Does Apple usually stick with one manufacturer across HD sizes?

Ah, mixed emotions are flooding me. Just returned my perfectly working CD MBP for a complete refund, in order to get myself one of these C2D. Why return a perfectly working computer? It saved me lotsa money, but I am going to be without a laptop for a couple of more weeks.

Hopefully, the wait won't kill me nor be too long ;)

You'll be fine with the bottom 2.16GHz $1799 ed model. 128MB Video RAM is more than enough for a projector. I want to drive an external 30" Dell so that's why I'm thinking I'll need 256MB Video RAM but I'm really not sure that's true either. Anyone here know if you won't be gamin' but will be editing video will the 256MB Video RAM make a difference over the 128MB video RAM when driving a 30" display?

thanks! good news.

Whats really annoying, is that I have had the money available for ages to buy a nice new MBP, now they actually come out things are a little tight and I think I will have to wait a few weeks.

Exact same system, shipping estimate, and country as mine. Seeing as the ones estimated for the 30th shipped yesterday, I am slightly hopeful mine might ship today.

Mine (same as yours but 120GB HD and Germany) had estimated shipping 30.Nov. and was shipped today. Should be here at latest at 01.Nov.

i can confirm that the new mbp's with the 120gb hd are using perpendicular technology.

the hd model no. in mine is MHW2120BH. link to fujitsu website --> http://www.fujitsu.com/global/support/computing/storage/hdd/mhdd/mhw2xxxbh-catalog.html

The 120GB, as mentioned on the page you linked to, is *not* using perpendicular technology -- check the fine print. The 160GB does. Some of the 80GB drives do. The others in the range, including the 120GB, do not; they use the (older, familiar) longitudinal magnetic recording (LMR) standard.
