do these wait times apply to ordering from an Apple store, or just online?
can you still use your educational discount at an Apple store?

Yes you can still use the edu discount at the Apple Store. The only real difference is that depending on what sales rep you get, you may have to show school ID. But believe it or not, sometimes they just take your word for it.

EDIT: It looks to be that some stores already have them and are willing to put you on a waiting list, and let you get first dibbs, but as in my case here in NYC, they had no clue there even was a new macbook pro.

i ordered with the ADC student discount which is only online. i believe they accept the edu discount in the stores as long as you have some sort of ID or proof, but im not totally sure.
yeah i figured i would just need some proof. that's fine by me as long as i can get my MBP faster

so i found this review http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/fujitsu-mhv2120bh.html

which includes a seagate 160 5.4k PMR HD in it's review (which i think someone said is what is in the new MBPs). The fujitsu did pretty awful, but it actually beat out the 160 in a few tests, so now i really don't know!

Just get the 160GB... It's the best overall performance/value choice. The 200GB did beat it in some of those xbitlabs tests, but that's to be expected with some things, afterall the data is 25% more densly packed onto the platter surfaces, so you get 25% more data passing the drive heads per platter revolution. But it has so many things going against it. The 4200rpm spindle is one of those things, but hardly the biggest even though that's what everyone concentrates on and points the finger at.

Don't go there. :) For roughly the same price as a 15" Macbook Pro you can get a 17" Dell with a Geforce 7900GS. Or much cheaper for a 15" one with a worse GPU.

...And there's several things the MBP has that the Dell XPS line does not. Like Dual-link DVI for connecting a 30" display. ;) ...Most of Dell's notebooks don't even have a DVI port.

I wouldn't say that Apple has better audio components, but I think they have better insulation or isolation of their speakers and/or audio circuits. Most PC notebooks out there exhibit hissing or noise from their internal speakers. Then again, if you actually think any internal notebook speakers actually sound good (even Apple's), then you need a reality check. IMO, the best sounding notebooks peakers have been the Harmon Kardon speakers in the HP ZD and DV series notebooks. But I'll never buy another HP notebook after what I've went through with them over the past couple years -- the support is possibly the worst out there from any commonly recognized name.

To Multimedia, and others who were curious about my setup:

YES, currently the Macbook is my only mac, and my old PC has 2 VGA outs, so I couldnt drive it with that.

The Macbook is driving the 30" ACD using the $19 Apple mini-dvi --> DVI adapter. Of course it is driving it at a pitiful 1280x800 !! Check the pictures again and you will notice how huge those desktop icons are!! LOL :p

So yeah until the MBP gets here I am sitting an extra foot away :) It does scale quite well though, considering.

Oh and Multimedia, the reason I went with the edu ACD @ $1799 over the Dell... Just look at it !! Seriously. Sexy.

I've noticed far better audio quality in Apple's notebooks than the built in soundcard in my PC from the recording perspective. I do analog recording from time to time and had to buy a better soundcard for my PC but when I used my Powerbook, the sound quality was nearly just as good built in as a $200 M Audio card.

One More Thing...

You know what I was most disapointed about when I ordered the MBP?

I was going to order the wireless keyboard and mouse set for $54 like you can with the iMacs... But it wasn't an option, now separately they cost much more....Booo
:(

When did you order? My order was placed by 7:07AM Cuppertino time (although the order status page says 7:22AM) on tuesday morning. I ordered the exact same config as you, but with a glossy screen - no shipment yet. I'm thinking that they're just getting produced (or shipped) in waves and so far I haven't seen many (or even any) reports of a glossy screen shipping. Either way, my estimated ship is the 30th and delivery of the 1st... I paid the $18 for 2-day shipping, which was probably a mistake. As with HP and other notebooks that are BTO in Asia, they tend to get shipped via FedEx IPS, which is 2 to 4 day service to anywhere in the US/Canada. So the $18 shipping upgrade was probably a waste of $18.

If your order hasn't shipped yet, call Apple and add them to the order. I've heard that they sometimes will give you a discount or comparable price for this, but haven't tried it myself.

This hissing was actually through headphones. Even Windows chimes and things had hiss before during and after the sound played. Really sad.
Not an issue for desktops, since you can just drop in a Live!/Audigy 2/X-Fi, but it stinks for laptops.

I do like how Apple lets even the Macbook use DVI! In terms of bang for the buck, at least for games, Dell still kills Apple though.

That is probably since with the iMac, you are paying for the wireless set and giving them back the wired set, in essence. So, the discount is a credit for the wired set. Just my guess... :)

just got back from providence place. the "official" word is that the 17" C2D machines will be in stock "the first or second week of November." and since i am near the top of the waiting list, i should be the first to know when they get in. here's hoping for a wednesday surprise!

Called to see if I could get the key+mouse set for $60... 2 depts said no :) Oh well....

In response to the other post above... Don't they still ship a wired set regardless of if you order the wireless? Do they really mess with the inside of the iMac box? Hmm dunno.

When I called a few days ago to upgrade my shipping on the 30" from free to 2-day they did that for free... but it sounded like they were training a new rep, so maybe thats why... lol

2.16 or 2.33?

I actually ordered a 2.33 already, but as it hasn't shipped i am now questioning my choice(typical). I am really pushing what i can afford if i got the 160gig in the 2.33. For over $200 less i could get 2 gig ram + 160 HDD in the 2.16ghz. So really my question is, as an occasional gamer, do you guys think i should downgrade the processor (2.33 to 2.16) and graphics memory (256 to 128), but upgrade the hard drive (120 to 160) and save over $200?

thanks

On the other hand, I think some of the price premium is actually worth it, as AFAIK Apple uses high-quality audio components, and Dell's are junk. (I've heard hissing just watching DVDs on Dell laptops, though external sound cards are possible).

### Hey...I agree...you can get a Dell with better specs for less money...AND...Dell is not underclocking the GPU like Apple *is* doing. Alienware is even better in my opinion, yet this Apple update isn't bad imo. It was worth waiting for...though I'm not buying until Santa Rosa.

No, they only ship the one that's ordered. If you order a wired set, it gets put in the box, if you order a wireless set, that gets put in the box.

I know that off and on wireless sets have been unavilable with iMac and Mac Pro systems (probably due to availability) and they couldn't be added to the online shopping card. But you could call Apple and have them added to your order.

Mine just shipped! I ordered more or less as soon as the store was back up on Tuesday. The machine details are...

Original shipping estimate 31st Oct
Original delivery estimate 7th November

2.33GHz
160GB drive
Matte screen
Everything else standard

It's being shipped to the UK. The estimated delivery now says 8th November but from past experience I know the UK estimates are always way too long.

A few days ago the slower one of these would have been the fastest portable mac in the world - now we wonder if it's fast enough... such is computers. :) They're probably close enough that you can best tell using benchmarks - for lots and lots of things the difference might be quite close. I am able to buy either, budgetwise, but I'll admit, I went the 2.16 route (so I'm biased) yet I do "heavy" work on my MBP - video editing.I travel a lot so hence trying to do this on MBP instead of tower. In the end, my work is going just fine on a 2.16 Core Duo so this is a step up for me. I just felt I could put the money to better use, that was my personal choice. I would recommend getting what you can afford, as long as it can do the job. The 2.16 vs. 2.33, 128MB video memory, for $500... if you are questioning it I think you have your answer. For me (and I think many) if you stare at the specs long enough you end up getting the top-end machine. Nice if you can swing it but I think you'd be fine saving a few $ and getting the "lower" one... just my 2 cents. They're both great machines and I can't imagine you'd be disappointed with either.

I would agree with dgoss, get what you can afford. Although I was tempted by the 2.33GHz model I realised that I certainly didn't need it and the 2.16GHz was more than adequate. I could have got the 2.33 for ~£300 pounds more but I am on somewhat of a budget (even with HE discount) and I'm putting that money towards a Dell 2407WFP. This will make me far more productive and provide a much more pleasurable experience with my MBP. Far more than a bit of vram/ram and a marginally faster proc.

Frack!, i've been delayed. Why?!?!?!
