Forgive me if this has been addressed but I stopped following the thread at about page 40. (I think)

iLife + M$Office + Mail, Add Book, Firefox etc = About 95% of my activity. I'm planning to learn and use FCExpress. How much performance will I lose by getting a MacBook? I don't game or do 3D stuff and I don't foresee starting in the next couple of years. I don't have a need for Windows but if my wife inherits it she'll probably need it. 75 - 90% of my work is at my desk and I would guess that's were all of the video editing will be done.

Assuming I can wait for the C2D MacBooks, further assuming that they put a good chip in them, will I kick myself for not going Pro? I figure for about the price of a MBPro (17" since I won't be able to afford a 2nd monitor) I can get a MB + 20" display + wireless peripherals. Since most of my work will be at my desk having a dual monitor would be great - I might even go with the 23".

A couple of hundred dollars difference isn't a big deal. That only hurts when you pay the CC bill. Lack-luster performance will hurt for years.

Thanks for the gray cells.

You buy bottom 2.16GHz MacBook Pro $1799 Ed + $90 for 160GB HD, + 1GB stick for $99, + a Dell 24" 1920x1200 for $679 for a total of $2667. You're good to go.

OR

2GHz C2D MacBook $1199 Ed + 2 1GB sticks for $200 + forgetaboutit 'cause it winds up costing almost as much as the bottom MBP. And for video you're gonna wind up wanting FW800 & dedicated graphics which MB doesn't have.

None At Santa Clara CA Valley Fair Yet

Went to Santa Clara CA Valley Fair Mall today - closest Apple Store to Apple World HQ in Cupertino - and they still had not recieved any yet as of about 11AM.

BTW Fry's has the 400GB 16MB cache Seagate PATA/100s 5 year warranty on sale this weekend for $100 each Limit 4 per checkout.

So i ordered my 17 MBP yesterday morning and im in the same boat with the other 17ers.

Shipping date of November 9th, and delivery of November 17!!!

sooo far away. But the sales lady at apple said it really wont take that long so for all of you patiently waiting for your 17s it WILL ship sooner then your projected dates. how much? she hinted if you ordered in the past couple days expect to ship around the first few days of November...YAY.

CANT WAIT!!! my first MAc

BTW anybody who's been lucky enough to pick one up...reviews yet? i know its early, but heat? screen hinges and color? sounds/mooing? wireless strength? Thanx

Common question: Should I upgrade?

Common question: Should I upgrade?

In this case the answer is deceptively simple.

If you bought a Core Duo machine, no.

If you have ANY prior (Mac or PC) desktop or laptop and you are ready to join the Apple laptop crowd and want the very best computer at a sensational value price, yes! The low end is fine. If you have abundant cash, go a step or two higher.

Most regular laptop users prefer the matte 15" over the 17". If you are a guy who does a lot of presentations, or this is primarily your desktop replacement, or you are a heavy duty graphics editor, go 17".

If you are short on cash the low end MacBook is a great way to go with minimal compromises for the "average user". If you are a student or alumni, don't forget the edu discount! Give it a shot.

DELL Monitors Are A Better Value With A Lot More Features Than Apple Plus Cost Less

I'm with you, displays last a long time for me, and looking at Apple's displays and not being frustrted that it says Dell and is slightly ugly is good for me in the long run. Otherwise I would just wish it looked as good as the cinema displays.

Multimedia is opinionated, let him, he might be saying it and repeating it all day long just because he hopes that will make Apple lower the price, because deep down inside, he would prefer that his monitor carried an Apple-logo and looked good. ;)
Objectively look at all the features on the DELL that the Apple displays don't have:

1. Elevator. Height adjustment from 18.5" to 22". Apple none.
2. Swivel Stand 60º either way. Apple none.
3. 9-Way Memory Card Reader connected to the USB 2 line so it's really like a 5-Port USB 2 Hub. Apple none.
4. 4-Port USB 2 Hub. Apple 2-Port USB Hub + 2-port FW Hub DELL has not. i can buy a 3 port FW Hub for $30 if I need it.
5. Black frame doesn't reflect screen in dark. Apple Shiny Frame reflects screen in dark.
6. DELL logo. Apple Apple.
7. DELL 20" & 24" Monitors all swivel 90 degrees. If you have an ATI video card in your Mac, they all support that swivel for poster design for example.

All Dell monitors less than 30" include S-Video, Composite Video and the 24" have RGB Component Video inputs too. They also all have analog VGA inputs in addition to DVI Inputs so you can drive two different Macs through one screen.

Plus they cost radically less money. I doubt Apple will ever offer monitors as well as DELL does. I am sold on DELL's quality and I am not alone here on this one. AppliedVisual please?

Agreed, unless Apple does a revision or prices are slashed, the current Displays are just not worth it IMHO except you're an avid graphics designer.

I just think you get waaay less for your money. Apple logo or not, the way i see it you're paying for aluminium and an Apple logo and thats not what its about.

3 More Days!

I have 3 more days before my replacement MPB C2D ships! SO DAMN EXCITED!:D

I've been waiting for my replacement computer to be shipped for 3 weeks now! I've been macbookproless for the past month and forced myself to buy a new iMac because I convinced myself that my iBook, Mac Mini, and the Compaq would not suffice as my temporary backup computer!

Heres the dish on what happened:

My computer would not recognize the boot volume but only the EFI (Enhanced Firmware I....(Interface?)?). I went to the Apple store and was told that it would be going to the depot (its a place where they have experts work on all the sick macs where they have every part needed for the models and the staff with more experience and knowledge than the Geniuses at the bar - for those of you who don't know what the depot is). A week later it was diagnosed as a bad logic board and was repaired and sent back to the Apple store. Apple called me to let me know that the problem still wasn't fixed and they would have to send it back out again. They replaced the HD, cables and the GPU and sent it back to Apple. After I picked it up I noticed on the receipt the repair was for a 100gb (I had a 120gb) and 1gb of ram (I had 2gb). I took it back home to call Apple to tell them how outrageous this whole ordeal is. Well I boot it up to just use it but it keeps rebooting NON-STOP! UGH!... Well Apple told me to send the mbp back to them with all the cables, manuals, and dvds. Well I waited and waited for about 4 days until apple finally sent me an RMA # to ship the machine back to them! Finally they had received the tracking number and released the order of my macbook pro but it wouldn't be shipped till Oct. 19th.... Checked the orderstatus a day before the 19th and noticed my order was pushed to the 25th! I was so frustrated! But, the other day when the C2D were released the order status changed once again from Oct. 25 to Oct. 30th. Then I noticed something HUGE! My MBP went from a CD to a C2D!

Old Specs:
2.16
2gb
120gb
15" Matte (NON-GLOSSY)!

to

New C2D specs:
2.33ghz
2gb
160gb
15 Matte

I've been an Apple consumer for 18 years and I still have my original mac plus :D . I will never buy a PC... but if one is given to me... (like the Compaq). I am a devoted Apple consumer A.K.A. Mac cult member. This will not sour my experience at Apple and I hope it doesn't to the people who read this.

Yay!

I GOT MY NEW C2D MBP TODAY! I went and picked it up, i'm about to take it out the box!!! I almsot don't want to!! Yay! The wait was soooo worth it!!!!

So the ones that are shipping yesterday and today from Shanghai and going to the US - are there estimated arrivals on the FedEx track? How many business days, generally two (ie, Thursday to arrive Monday and Friday -> Tuesday)?

Thanks.

hey guys, for that tracking site, where do I get that code that starts with a "80"?

I ordered my MBP on the day it was released and it's still not shipped and I just wanna know the freak it is :)

I had a built to order 2.16 GHz MBP and it has been shipped today (10/27). Double checked my card, and it was zapped for the money.

Can't wait... :D

When did you order your BTO. I ordered the 15" lower end with 2GB RAM upgrade and hard drive upgraded to 160GB. I have been checking my order status 2000 times a day. I thought I was the only crazy one but I guess all of you are just like me or some of you are bigger freaks than me. :) . I have been with Windows and officially switching. Hopefully it will be a good experience.

Just a point to note. My order status was showing not yet shipped and the laptop order was showing up as MBPRO 15/2.16. I had emailed apple about my status and they said it was ready to be shipped but unfortunately its weekend now so it might ship only on Monday. DOES ANYONE KNOW if apple Shanghai assembling unit ships on Saturdays?

Also a thing to note was when my order was in the prepared to be shipped status (this is internal apple status not available for public) my laptop like item started showing this. MBPRO 15/2.16/2G/160/128VRAM/SD-DL-USA
Z0DP1LL/A. Earlier it was MBRP 15/2.16 Z0D. This is just a guess that when your order is ready to be shipped it might show up like mine. Dont hold me to this.

Again please let me know if the Shanghai unit has ever shipped on a Saturday. I might die of this anxiety. PLEASE HELP ME. :)

UPDATE
Ok guys. I couldn't sleep the whole night with the question. Does Shanghai unit ship on Saturdays. Guess what I got a shipment notificiation. They do work 24X7. Thanks dgoss. So its true. If you notice your order item going from MBPRO 15/2.16 Z0D to MBPRO 15/2.16/2G/160/128VRAM/SD-DL-USA it means your order is shipping within 24 hours. This might be true for USA people but maybe the last characters will change for other countries. I cannot wait.

dgoss thanks for your encouraging words. You just made me more anxious now :)

kstotlani, I don't have the info you really need - I was wondering same about if they ship/process on weekends - I think in Shanghai everything would be 24/7 but who knows, and who knows w/the FedEx part. Sorry.

I did want to say congrats on switching. You'll never look back. If you are at all into what makes a computer run better, smoother and more elegantly, OS X is simply the top. I'd be curious to hear your impressions down the road. But OS X is technically an incredible OS - and the user experience is second to none also. Finally, beautiful hardware too. Congratulations, happy to see you switch.

Apple Displays

I just don't get it man.
I have a 24" Dell Monitor and I am very satisfied with it. The quality is just awesome!! Now i wish I have two of 'em, because you get used to the big 24". And for music production, its kinda nice.

The quality is very good, better than the Apple Displays IMO.

Why pay more for less quality, because an apple logo on it? in the end , all cook with water man.

Like Multimedia said, you also get Card REader, and USB Interface on the side. Further then, Lots of connection possibilities, composite, etc.

Go with the Dell Monitrs dude!

I have to wait until 16th of November for my 15",2.33, 160HD, 3GB, matte (try using glossy outside of buildings)

Someone else also kind of same delivery times? I ordered on 24th.

I got the same configuration as you and ordered on the 24th. This will be my first Mac as well. I too was going crazy checking the site. I hope yours ships soon. It must be soon... :)

I'm going to repost the question I asked earlier in the thread to see if I can get a few more answers!

I had a question that anyone can answer really.. actually, I'd prefer multiple answers! I was just wondering how you're going to go about paying for the MBP... I've been waiting for Merom since August as well, but yet.. I just can't let myself spent almost $2400 in one shot.

and... does anyone know about any of the Apple stores in Texas? preferably in the Houston area? do they have any of the new ones in yet?

here! here! first mac! shipping from china! =/

I guess I'll just never be able to decide between glossy and matte, and just will end up never buying my new computer. This sucks - I can't make a decision. I like the way glossy looks, but I've read some stuff on the eye-strain, and that sorta worries me as my eyes are easily strained. I've sat a matte and glossy side by side, and I just loe the way glossy works. I can't decide.

Just take it mate. I spoke to one of the apple store people over the phone and they said they've added an anti-glare which matte screen has onto their glossy screen. that's one of the update apparently. =)
