"Checking ship times every ten mins, making excuses to go use the loo when in fact i was rushing to the nearest internet terminal to check my status. SKIPPING school for two days from the day the machine arrived so i could play with it.
Now that was excitement!"

I hear you!!! .... I think I may just take a day off when the thing comes in so I have some time to install all my software an Boot Camp.

Highly recommended ;)

MP?, try 640X480...i think. I know its not up to a MP

My friend's HP is around $1200 and he has 1.3 Mega Pixel camera I wonder why the MBP's camera is not as good as the HP?

Not that I am complaining. I wanted to have a MB, but the thought of using XP for another 1 or 2 weeks forced me to buy the 2.33 15'' MBP.

patrick, do you have any insight on preformance differences in the 120 LMR and the 160 PMR?

-mightymike107

Wow. Um. I'm going to need a teensy bit more info for comparison.

But hey, let me try to help by going 'real world' here. I'm in IT, so I'm not really close to the labs, and it's not like I can say anything about what we're brewing, but I can say this:

Read/write/access time performance between PMR and LMR are pretty much the same, the only difference is capacity really.

I'd be very wary of a 120gb LMR single-disk drive because they'd be tickling the superparamagnetic limit - if not slamming right into it. Meaning the bit's would become useless very quickly, and your drive will die sooner. Always check the MTBF on a drive (Mean Time Between Failures) as a part of the research.

Hitachi's drive is unique (and ergo one of the reasons it arrived after Seagate's PMR intro despite we having invented the technology), because of the IrMnCr (Iridium-Manganese-Chromium) head.

For a funky animation as to what the heck it is go here.

I will say this, it's a tough drive and it's easy on the battery.

Not sarcastic at all. You say "we" invented the technology. Was that self-inclusive?

-Bill Gates

Yes, I said 'we', I work for Hitachi.

EDIT: Oh, and before we go there, let me put something to rest:

I don't talk up Hitachi's products because I work for them, it's the other way around, I work for them because I've always preferred their products (and IBM before the acquisition)

Gaming HD

Can anyone who has experience with laptop hardrives tell me if the 7200 rpm HD helps games at all. I'd think games would benefit from the faster HD speed. Doesn't matter anyways seeing as the faster HD was the only way I could afford a 17" anyways. :D BTW I remember reading that a lot of people are getting their MBPs early. Anyone gotten their 17" yet?

glossy or matte...glossy or matte...

is glossy a passing trend? is matte the only way to go? does glossy hurt the eyes? is matte as dull and lifeless as i think it is?

ive looked at both for hours, and i can't tell what i want

Hey, that's cool... I haven't looked at the Hitachi web site, but most vendors selling them are claiming it's LMR. You guys might want to check your product literature or vendor spec sheets. ;)
That's a problem with the vendors. Both Hitachi and Seagate claim they are PMR. I thought we established this yesterday.

I think its the other way around. Go to the apple store and see which one you like different. I love the glossy and its awesome for everything. I really feel its the way of the future for screens. almost all high end HD tvs have the gloss screen and it has come a long way since they first debuted. But its personal preference, just compare them side by side and see what fits you best.

*note* pictures of them online don't really give you insight to which is better.

I know that we've been through this over and over, but I'm still gonna give you my 2 cents.

IMO the glossy screen on a MBP looks cheap and unproffessional. It looks out of place against the texture of the anodized aluminum. Also, because of the glare and smudges that plague ownership of a glossy screen, I'm always acutely aware that I'm looking at a screen, as opposed to a matte screen where I am simply looking at whatever's on screen, you know what I mean? It's difficult to articulate.

Hope that helps.

Man, every TV has a glossy finish. All the high end displays, however (Apple, Dell) have matte finishes.

Our vendors should, yes.

Hey, I do stand corrected though, our 5k120 (5200rpm x 120gb)is indeed LMR.

I really need to check with one of the scientists to see where the limit is - if it isn't a secret or anything ;)

More info in the Linkypoo.

Aaaaaand by my estimation, my spankin' new MBP should be riiiiight abouuuut over Hawaii right now.

Hey, anybody got names worked out yet? I've decided on calling my Janus - the Greek god of gates, doors, and doorways. Probably should have bought this in January to be even more appropriate.

EDIT: Hey guys? It just occured to me that our estimated ship dates may be based on Shanghai time. Which is good for us folks in the West of the West, because that's 16 hours ahead of us. E.G. My Notebook left Shanghai 1:39am tomorrow.

Seconded. This is one of those very polarizing subjects that gets people pretty heated pretty quickly, but for what it's worth, I agree with Konfabulation. Glossy, to me, looks tacky and ostentatious. For a computer that I plan to actually use, I wouldn't have anything but a matte display. ...And in a few weeks, this (matte display) powerbook will be replaced by a (matte display) c2d mbp. glory be.

Apple has figured out how to predict the future! :p

Thirded, the glossy looks cheap, like it's just for show and not for actual work. I find glossy screens extremely distracting when I actually want to sit down and get something done.

Furthermore, if glossy screens are so much better and aimed at pros then why are the pro displays from Apple (Cinema Displays), Dell and anyone else all matte? If glossy was really a professional plus then wouldn't all these monitors have glossy screens?

Word G fresh.
